I really adore characters in this series. I loved to get Cardan's POV and Cardan & Jude are so awesome together.

This felt like reading a dark fairytale and I loved that. The structure was quite clever, I loved how little stories from Cardan's past were intertwined with the present storyline where we got to see what happened after The Queen of Nothing.

Belongs to the “Folk of the air” series. 5⭐️ out of 5.
I read this book in one night. Yes, it‘s a relative short book, but it had me hooked so much, I couldn‘t put it down. The illustrations were a really nice addition and helped the story come to life. I especially liked how it started with “random” stories from Cardan‘s childhood, but in the end came together to one big plot. A really good book from an unusual point of view.

Also finished this one in a few hours; cute little collection of stories, but I don‘t think the hype that surrounded it a few years ago was worth it; now I think I‘m going to get into The Stolen Heir and see if I love that one!

Having a little bit of Cardan‘s side of the story was amazing, I wish it had more chapters, I think I could totally reread the whole trilogy in his pov.
Not him and Jude having bubble tea in the last chapter, that was quite something

For anyone needing more The Folk of Air!

The book starts with a young Cardan explaining how he came to be the cruel prince. We learn about his childhood, his romance with Nicasia, and why he was drawn to Jude.

Early Cardan is told a story. I wondered why it was important but by the end it made sense.

I didn‘t love this as much as the series. But, read it for more Folk of Air, backstory, and a satisfying ending.

While waiting to find the third and last book of the series, I read this illustrated one... wow! The drawings are beautiful, and I finished the book soooo quickly!
It was just what I needed to remember the characters and get off my reading slump :)

This was such an interesting short story. It was definitely interesting to see things through Cardan‘s point of view. It really expanded on what his life was like in the palace. I really enjoyed reading this book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I loved this beautifully written and illustrated backstory to Cardan‘s history. It contains the missing pieces from the rest of the series plus more Cardan and Jude cuteness. Like the rest of the series it has Holly Black‘s wit and creativity.

This is a short story companion to the Cruel Prince trilogy. It‘s a sweet story…very young, fairy tale-like in essence. We learn a bit more about what makes Cardan who he is and Jude makes an appearance also. It really feels like a middle grade or even younger story with the help of illustrations that reminded me of the famous Garth Williams. It‘s cute.

I do love a book with a map. But I didn‘t enjoy the book . . . probably because I didn‘t know it came from her Folk of the Air series. Maybe had I read that series, I would have enjoyed this book more. But this book doesn‘t encourage me to read the series.

I will say the illustrations by Rovina Cai are gorgeous.

I held off on getting the tagged book when it first came out this past fall and opted to wait until it went down in price a little bit, which it finally did! It's a fun book, and BEAUTIFULLY illustrated. It explores more of Cardan's past and even leads up to the last two stories which are about him and Jude! 😍💕📚 I loved it so much, and really want to reread the whole series again! 😁

January wrap-up: I finished 5 books but only 2 of them were on my #bookspin list and I didn‘t even get to my spin! Only one of them, Anne of the Island, was previously owned; Girl in Hyacinth Blue was actually BOTH a library book and a reread (I would never have reread it, but it was a book club pick and I knew it would be a good discussion), so my #PennyPerPage comes out to $7.87.

This compilation of tales was fascinating and whimsical and done with as much imagery and artistry as we have come to expect from a Holly Black novel. The writing was alluring and robust without being flowery or verbose. The characters were gorgeously poignant and brilliantly emotive (as usual)! The world building was ethereal, folktale(esque), charming and idyllic. If you liked the Folk Of The Air series, you'll 100% love this short read!
