Unpopular opinion, I really liked this. I have been having a year of wives books with books like Cursed Bread, My Husband and Our Wives Under The Sea and I find them fascinating. I particularly love it when the narrator is falling slowly into madness. It reminds me a bit of 1 of my favorite shorts The Yellow Wallpaper. Here the Wife's husband has written a story with a disagreeable protagonist & a shop woman asks if she is based on Mrs. this 👇

ChaoticMissAdventures Starts a quick spiral, in which our Mrs starts to believe her husband has killed a woman in a different state. I loved the atmosphere of the book set in the early 60s where cocktails and housekeepers and dressing up for dinner are still in vogue. I also love how the author gives you room to both pity and despise Mrs March. 6mo
Ruthiella I liked this one a lot too! 👍 6mo

I‘m finally getting around to this lovely gift from @Cathythoughts and I‘m really enjoying it.

As one of the blurbs mentions, there is a bit of a Patricia Highsmith feel to it so far (and that is a definite plus for me!).

I could not put this book down - Mrs. March thinks her husband is hiding something, her son may have mental health issues, she may or may not be delusional - what's real, what isn't? This book was like an amazing roller coaster ride - loved how the story was told through the unreliable narrator Mrs. March - so why soso? At the end of the ride we go up a big hill and just stop -

I thought this might be a nice little psychological thriller for #scarathlon, but I‘m at 34% and the Otessa Moshfegh-ness is getting to me. I get that she‘s written as an unlikable character, but it‘s getting hard to care. I like looking up spoilers for books like these, to see if they ever resolve anything or if you end up not sure what‘s just in the MC‘s head, and everyone is being very circumspect 😡 help? I need to know if I should finish!

Ruthiella I suggest you DNF if you don‘t like books with unresolved endings. Most definitely a lot of the action is only in Mrs. March‘s head and not a reflection of reality. 1y
Larkken @Ruthiella thanks! I really appreciate it. Im weird, but find knowing the ending can alleviate my anxiety so I can enjoy a books prose… or decide to dnf 😂 You are right, together with the unlikable narrator, I think having the ending unresolved would just bug me. 1y
Ruthiella @Larkken I hear you! I sometimes jump ahead in a book just to find out if something terrible has happened and then I go back read what led up to it. It alleviates my tension! 😅 1y

I‘m giving this a pick but to be quite honest this is a beyond creepy and somewhat unsettling read. The FMC refers to herself as Mrs March through the entire read. But what makes this a page turner is the ambiguous time period and descriptive pose.

Once I realized this was not the modern retelling of Little Women I thought it was I settled in and enjoyed the messed up tale told by the unreliable narrator, Mrs March. The weirdest thing was how she referred to herself as Mrs March even in childhood flashbacks.

Wow, OK. This was a strange one. Are unreliable narrators your jam? Then you‘ll love this.

Mrs March is a strange character. I was most unsettled by the way she thinks of herself as Mrs March, even when flashing back to herself as a little kid! As if that‘s always been her identity.

Definitely not a book I‘d have chosen on my own, and not a preferred genre for me, but I think we‘ll done for what it is!

#FantasticStrangelings

EJG31 I'm listening to the audiobook and I agree. I'm not sure I'm going to finish it and I'm more than half way. Honestly I am still not sure what's going on, it's confusing too. 2y
Hooked_on_books I was not a fan of this at all. It went completely off the rails for me when she flashed back to being 2 years old and was still “Mrs March.” 🙄 No. 2y
Soubhiville @Hooked_on_books isn‘t it weird? I didn‘t totally hate it, but I definitely didn‘t enjoy it. Strangest book I‘ve read in some time. 2y

The wife of an author who thinks she‘s the main character in his latest book sounded intriguing. Almost gave up on this a few times but persevered to see if it got any better, it didn‘t. I found the main character one dimensional and the whole book is boring and repetitive with a disappointing ending

This was quite an interesting story, I didn't love it though. I tending towards not really liking Mrs March, but at the same time sorry she is going through a mental breakdown. The husband isn't exactly all that nice too. Mrs March enjoys her lifestyle until someone comments that the main character who is a prostitute in the new book by her husband could be based on her. This turns her world upside down and she begins to unravel.

This book reminds me of an Alfred Hitchcock plot. Mrs. March is unravelling & slowly losing her mind. Untethered & unreal, Mrs. March exists in a world of expectations never met, while living a surface life with her husband, a successful author & their son. The surface breaks when she hears that her husband‘s latest character-an ugly, unlovable, prostitute-is based on her. This book moves slowly. My issue is that I never cared. 3/5.

Mrs March has a mental illness. How entertaining!! What fun! Let‘s write a novel that reflects the banality and sheer tedium of life with depression or anxiety, but, just for giggles, let‘s give her no self-awareness, even when the most clueless are exposed to rudimentary bullet-points on mental health. How about people who don‘t have a mental illness don‘t write about mental illness-down with psychological appropriation?

“The truth is,” Zelda continued, “this is a game-changing book, one that appeals not only to his fans , but to everyone, no, hold on” —— she wagged a finger at George, who had begun to protest—— “and, I‘m compelled to say , is my favorite book of the last decade! And I HATE to read!”

Imagine if Mrs Dalloway were written by Shirley Jackson but it‘s Mrs March you follow around, listening to her thoughts, wondering where the line between her reality and fantasy lies. Is she slightly unhinged or truly psychotic? It‘s not clear until the very end. Then you know. Absorbingly creepy!

I‘m not sure what blurbs I had read before reading this book, but this went in a direction that I didn‘t expect. Looking back now at blurbs and reviews they do all say ‘suspense‘, ‘psychological‘, ‘gothic‘ etc, but for some reason, I thought something completely different.

Still, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book and I can see why it has garnered such praise.

Ugh - only just noticed the cockroach 🪳 on the cover! 😣

Unsettling, in a can‘t-tear-your-eyes-away kind of way. This portrait of a woman unraveling before your eyes is compulsively readable and wholly believable- which, of course, is why it‘s so very disturbing. Very well done. Coming in August.
