The dazzling new novel from bestselling, award-winning author Maggie O'Farrell, THIS MUST BE THE PLACE crosses time zones and continents to reveal an extraordinary portrait of a marriage.Meet Daniel Sullivan, a man with a complicated life.A New Yorker living in the wilds of Ireland, he has children he never sees in California, a father he loathes in Brooklyn and a wife, Claudette, who is a reclusive ex-film star given to shooting at anyone who ventures up their driveway. He is also about to find out something about a woman he lost touch with twenty years ago, and this discovery will send him off-course, far away from wife and home. Will his love for Claudette be enough to bring him back?THIS MUST BE THE PLACE crosses continents and time zones, giving voice to a diverse and complex cast of characters. At its heart, it is an extraordinary portrait of a marriage, the forces that hold it together and the pressures that drive it apart. Maggie O'Farrell's seventh novel is a dazzling, intimate epic about who we leave behind and who we become as we search for our place in the world.

Maggie O‘Farrell is reliably good.

Each time I see one of her novels on sale second hand I grab it. I think this is the fourth one I‘ve read.

I so enjoyed this novel. I loved the non-linear storytelling; I loved piecing the story together in bits and pieces. This is my kind of storytelling: not necessarily easy to follow, but a great story of family, faults, and figuring s--t out. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (Thank you, @BekahPat for sharing this title with me. 🥰$

I really enjoyed O‘Farrell‘s writing. She sketches character and places into your minds eye so you can picture them vividly. Some parts admittedly were too long and wordy, but mostly good. A lot of characters come in with no introduction and date of events needs to be kept in view. If the author herself -see above- had to keep a pin board of post-it notes to keep track of the storyline then the reader needs to be alert. #booked2019 #setinireland

I‘m in Berlin for the weekend, visiting a friend who lives here. It is such a raw and impressive city, history is everywhere.

Here I have finished this book. It‘s the story of a marriage and kids and secrets. It‘s so well done, the plot, the characters, the emotions. O‘Farrell is a fantastic storyteller. I am definitely not finished with her.

Reagan I read the tagged book this year and it was a game changer. I have recommended it to everyone I meet! 1y

After Anne Bogel recommended this book on her podcast (What Should I Read Next?) I picked it up and was not disappointed! O‘Farrell‘s writing is drawn out and beautiful, focusing on the intimate details of her characters‘ lives and emotions. Told from many different points of view and changing time periods with each chapter, it is a family saga that is all-encompassing.

I am very confused about my feelings for this book. As I was reading it I was aware of how much I was enjoying the writing but the story is told through alternating points of view and a non-linear timeline which I was not really a fan of. Some parts completely sucked me in and others I wished we could just get on with it. Often I was restless so I think I was kind of relieved to come to the end.

An enjoyable story of a couple set over a number of different times, locations and told through a large range of characters. Well written and detailed but a little long and a few too many view points for me to keep up with. I'm scoring "This Must Be The Place" 3 stars.

I read this over four months while reading others. I don't recommend doing that because of the different characters that need a little focus to keep up with. I found myself flipping back and asking "ok who was this?!" But very well written. Characters and story were richly developed. And though some of them made poor choices I still liked them!

I'd heard so much about this author in the last year that I finally decided to try her when The Readers podcast included this novel in their potential summer reading.
I didn't know what the novel was about, just jumped in! And I might as well have because the characters and time switches take a while to coalesce, but I'd say in an enjoyable way.
One question for those who have read it- do you think this is an anti-abortion novel?

Lindy I read this too long ago to remember the abortion aspect, so I can‘t answer your question definitively. I‘ve read three of her novels plus her memoir and don‘t remember such a stance in any of them, so my guess is that it‘s O‘Farrell‘s way of looking at a complex issue, rather than taking a side on abortion. 2y
ReadingEnvy @Lindy thanks I appreciate that... I think I agree, I just needed to talk it out. I think it's maybe a similar issue with The Mothers which some hated because they saw it as anti-abortion but it was a realistic portrayal of a character who thought that way. 2y

//⭐️⭐️⭐️// Its been a while since I read this book. After much thought, I remember really liking the writing style, being absolutely fascinated by Daniel‘s occupation as a linguist, and thinking Daniel was one messed up character. I remember liking the various POVs. I remember thinking the ending was satisfying. However, it wound up not being all that memorable or soul-stirring. Still, it was an enjoyable book for the moment.

I‘m LOVING this novel by Maggie O‘Farrell! I am curious about her current memoir I Am, I Am, I Am. Yet I really wanted to read some of her fiction first, which is good because the library holds are long for the memoir! This novel is completely up my alley: family drama with multiple narrators that jumps around in time. It can get a little confusing, but I love threading the story lines together and having those WHOA! moments, ya know?

The title didn‘t seem very promising and it took me a while to warm up to it, but it turned out to be an amazingly good read. It can be a little complicated with the changing POVs, but there aren‘t too many characters and you soon get the hang of it. At times, Claudette and Daniel made me want to throw the book across the room, but they made the book exciting. I might have teared up at the ending. #MMDBookClub

‘How do you absorb the idea that you‘ve killed someone into your ordinary life? How do you go about the minutiae of the everyday when you know that, because of you, a girl is dead? It‘s impossible.‘
I‘m loving this book more than I thought I would. I don‘t want it to end but I also can‘t wait to finish and see where it goes. I suspect it may surprise me.

Sweettartlaura This book sold me on O‘Farrell - I buy her books every chance I get now❤️ 2y

suvata @LauraJ Didn‘t get the book yet, hon. I hope there is a way you can track it. Or, maybe the mail is just being really slow. 2y
LauraJ @suvata I‘ve got a tracking number, but the post office just shows it sitting at the post office here. I didn‘t get my February book either. 2y

#becausebookclub So this book, though I'm only 20 pages into it, is striking a nerve with me. I lost my grandfather a couple of years ago. My Poppy: one of the most incredible, grumpy, crazy, negative, loving, responsible men I have ever known in my entire life. The hardest part about it was the suddenness and unimportance that seemed to go along with his death. He was a war veteran, an amazing craftsman...continued in comments

AnnaDesourdy a fantastic husband and father; and suddenly he was gone and I felt like the world didn't mourn him enough. I know exactly where his ashes are and I haven't visited him since he was put there. I think I'll do so the next time I'm in town. #bookclub #amreading #thismustbetheplace #maggieofarrell (edited) 2y

Pickpick

Book 1: One of those books where you turn the last page and want to start right back at page one. Beautifully written, entwined around multiple characters, timelines and perhaps most importantly, place. Took me an age to get to this in my TBR pile but it was worth the wait.

KateFulfordAuthor If you like Maggie‘s style, perhaps you could consider my debut? Reviews are saying: “I loved this book more than I initially thought I would. Fulford infuses her characters with intense personalities that are prone to clashing with those of others. I loved Eve from the very beginning..." It‘s been nominated for The People's Book Prize 2018 too!
