House Across the Lake
House Across the Lake | Riley Sager
The New York Times bestselling author of Final Girls and Survive the Night ("a master of the twist and the turn"*) is back with his most unexpected thriller yet. *Rolling StoneCasey Fletcher, a recently widowed actress trying to escape a streak of bad press, has retreated to the peace and quiet of her family's lake house in Vermont. Armed with a pair of binoculars and several bottles of bourbon, she passes the time watching Tom and Katherine Royce, the glamorous couple living in the house across the lake. They make for good viewing--a tech innovator, Tom is rich, and a former model, Katherine is gorgeous. One day on the lake, Casey saves Katherine from drowning, and the two strike up a budding friendship. But the more they get to know each other--and the longer Casey watches--it becomes clear that Katherine and Tom's marriage isn't as perfect and placid as it appears. When Katherine suddenly vanishes, Casey becomes consumed with finding out what happened to her. In the process, she uncovers eerie, darker truths that turn a tale of voyeurism and suspicion into a story of guilt, obsession and how looks can be very deceiving. With his trademark blend of sharp characters, psychological suspense and gasp-worthy twists, Riley Sager's The House Across the Lake will shock readers until the very last page.

In the newest and somewhat craziest Sager novel Casey Fletcher becomes obsessed with her neighbors who literally live in a glass house acrossthe lake. And then one of them disappears.
It's an insane ride and I hope you all enjoy it in #LMPBC GroupH And @HufflepuffGirl90 I will mail it out to you just as soon as I can. @sprainedbrain @magyklyXdelish

This…was…a…🤯! You do have to suspend reality a lot with this one but as long as you do it‘s a wild and entertaining ride. I can honestly say I saw none of it coming, not even a little bit. Which I LOVE!! So good. I listened to the audiobook in 2 days, I couldn‘t stop listening. Totally unique. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

That was kind of crazy. Maybe too crazy for me? Felt more ridiculous than thrilling at times. It did keep me hooked enough that I wanted to know how it all played out, but not my favorite Sager. #BOTM

5feet.of.fury I get it, I feel like Sager‘s stuff always gets outrageous, so I was glad on this one to go full out though. 1w

🎧 📚 If this book didn‘t go completely off the rails in the final 2 hours I might have DNF‘d it.

It might be the best Sager book (I‘ve read them all).

The MC had just the right amount of snark for the 1st 1/2 of the book but around 72% I‘d had enough & was looking forward to her death.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👇🏻👇🏻

Twainy The MCs flaw that needs to be beat is made light of, justified & by the end of the book a supernatural aspect vies with her flaw recovery for Top billing.

So how do I rate this roller coaster of a story? It made me hate it and love it … the only negative is how the MCs flaw is handled.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I LOVED this. Creepy, mystery, lake atmosphere, plot twists everywhere. The supernatural aspect was also intriguing, not what I expected...I can't really say what it is exactly without giving anything away, but it's not usually a subject I'm good with. In this book though, it's very well done. Another win for me from my favorite thriller writer. 😁

I love Riley Sagar and would have definitely loved this book more if someone hadn‘t spoiled it for me by telling me a book it was similar to. Ruined the entire thing. Still a good book!!!!! Not my favorite by this author though.

MelissaSue81 Ooh. So I read a review of this after I read it that it was **just like** another book/story etc.. but the big twist was completely novel to me, so I assumed I hadn‘t seen it. I‘ve seen seen reviews of this that it is X meets Y and I think I know what you‘re talking about now, and it is something I have not seen, but I if I had I can see how it would be a big spoiler. 4w

This is officially my favorite Sager book! Casey, a NYC actress and fairly recent widow, has escaped to her family‘s lake house in Vermont in the wake of some very bad press. She spends the autumn days there by drinking and spying on her new neighbors. It doesn‘t take long before Casey realizes something is wrong in their marriage. The vibe of this book is Rear Window crossed with Behind Her Eyes.

The first half of the book was very slow and had the overused trope of the alcoholic spying on the neighbors thinking the husband killed the wife and no one believes her. But the second half had much more action and some very unique twists. The perfect book to read while at a lake house.

After the death of her husband, actress Casey Fletcher is reluctantly forced away from the public eye after a drunken performance of the play Shred of Doubt is sensationalized by the tabloids. She spends her time day drinking & spying on her neighbors on the patio of her family vacation home at Lake Greene. She befriends her neighbor in the titular house, former supermodel Katherine Royce & soon suspects that something is off. Domestic👇

vivastory thrillers that have been compared to Rear Window are a dime a dozen. This is the first one that I have read that feels to have earned the comparison. I encourage the reader to go in as blind as possible, but be warned. It will play havoc with any plans. This was a one sitting read for me & I stayed up until I finished & then had trouble sleeping because I was thinking about it, I had to order a larger coffee this morning (edited) 1mo
vivastory to function. No regrets. I will need to sit with this one before I can definitively say if it is my fave Sager. If it's not my favorite, it's def. top 2.

The premise of the book was similar to Hitchcock's Rear Window in that what you see when no one thinks you are watching can lead to trouble and danger. I never read Sager before, so I don't know if it's his style, but the book started off really slow. So much so that the first major plot twist doesn't hit until about 100+ pages in. Then the action finally ratchets up to the climax. I consider it a solid 3.5 stars.

This book was definitely a page turner. I was invested in knowing what happened to
Katherine that I read it in less than 48 hours. The plot twist was not what I was expecting at all. While the story was really good and I enjoyed it I felt a little disappointed at the ending.

There are quite a few reviews from readers who were disappointed in this. I wasn‘t one of them, but I can totally see where they are coming from. The paranormal/supernatural aspect in this was a bit of a hard swallow…but if you can get past that…and you know…just go with it, you may find this entertaining and fun. Also, the little bit at the very end helped everything come together in a satisfying manner.

5feet.of.fury I agree but I find with Sagers books I do have to suspend disbelief a bit so the fact that this time it was for a mystical reason I was MORE on board with it. 2mo

At first, I wasn‘t sure about Sager‘s take on Rear Window. It‘s been done a lot recently, and unreliable, drunk narrators are damn near a trope in thrillers. However, there‘s a reason he‘s so popular. It‘s very readable. He has you rooting for Casey, the MC, instead of judging her poor decisions. His twists are downright fun. Plus I liked the supernatural elements. He continues to grow as a writer, and you know I‘m in for the next one!

CBee I‘ve enjoyed the books of his I‘ve read but I just didn‘t like Survive the Night! I‘ll definitely check this one out as I haven‘t given up on him yet! 2mo
