The Lays of Beleriand
The Lays of Beleriand | John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, Christopher Tolkien
58 posts | 16 read | 18 to read
The third volume that contains the early myths and legends which led to the writing of Tolkien's epic tale of war, The Silmarillion. This, the third volume of The History of Middle-earth, gives us a priviledged insight into the creation of the mythology of Middle-earth, through the alliterative verse tales of two of the most crucial stories in Tolkien's world -- those of Turien and Luthien. The first of the poems is the unpublished Lay of The Children of Hurin, narrating on a grand scale the tragedy of Turin Turambar. The second is the moving Lay of Leithian, the chief source of the tale of Beren and Luthien in The Silmarillion, telling of the Quest of the Silmaril and the encounter with Morgoth in his subterranean fortress. Accompanying the poems are commentaries on the evolution of the history of the Elder Days. Also included is the notable criticism of The Lay of The Leithian by CS Lewis, who read the poem in 1929.

Post 2/2: When I read ”Of the Flight of the Noldor” now after reading the History of Middle-Earth (HoME), I always miss the actual inclusion of the oath of Fëanor and his sons. Reading the words feels so much more dramatic than only a narrative description. So, I‘m sharing two versions. This is the earlier version in poem form from the tagged book, and my favorite.

#FellowshipOfTolkien #Silmarillion

JazzFeathers I agree. The Oath of Feanor is powerful. Also, l don't remember it nnwhich version it is, but l really miss the actual debate before the Oath is taken. I remember thinking, everybody is right, and everybody is wrong, and this is diabolic!!!!! 😱😂 9mo

1. I guess I need to double check since my spreadsheet says 95 & Goodreads says 97.
2. 100 books
3. Lays of Beleriand by J.R.R. Tolkien - This one was so much more enjoyable than I expected since I‘ve slowly developed a greater appreciation for his poetry.
4. Fall of Gondolin by J.R.R. Tolkien - Yes, I‘m still enjoying all the Tolkien books!

JazzFeathers 😁 l've said Lays of Beleriand too. That was a great read indeed. I didn't say Fall of Gondolin because it won't be fall yet when we start. I hope. Checking the warehouse communications when l get to work and crossing my fingers. 6y

#ThereAndBackAgain Day 5 - The Unnumbered Characters

There's no way l talk about Tolkien's characters and l leaves out my dear Feanor.
Yes, yes, l know everybody hates him, we discussed all about it when we read the Silmarillion 😆
But what can l do? He's a marvellously complex, difficult, nuanced, strongwilled, stabborn and yes, also talented character. He will always be one of my favourite.

Daisey I stumbled across this t-shirt when I was on Etsy and immediately thought of you. She has a few I really like, but I‘m not sure anyone around me would understand them. https://www.etsy.com/listing/576987159/feanor-and-sons-silmarillion-black I‘ve also developed a whole new appreciation for Feanor and his sons as we‘ve read more. (edited) 6y
JazzFeathers @Daisey 😍 True, it takes another tolkienite to understand. The one about the Valar is even more mysterious 😆 l'm happy someone else is seeing something else that evil in Feanor 😄 6y

And talking about discovery, l know l've already said this time and again, but he the strength of the version in verses of the two great stories - The Children of Hurin and Beren and Luthien - just charmed me.
Never imagined it and loved to be charmed 😊😍

And thus it ends the Lays of Beleriand. A total pick... and l never expected it. I feared it would be hard and slow going reading these poems. But there is such power, such feelings and emotions, such visions, they complety sucked me in.

I hoped to enjoy this book based on my previous reading, but it far surpassed my expectations! Tolkien tells some wonderful stories in epic form through verse. If you enjoyed Children of Hurin or Beren & Luthien, I strongly recommend the versions in these pages. My only wish is that he had completely finished the “Lay of Leithian.”

Before my review, I want to share two comments on these pages.

I‘ve enjoyed many C.S. Lewis books and find his friendship with Tolkien interesting. However, I thought his method of commenting on and suggesting revisions to the poem was strange.

Secondly, I love The Lord of the Rings, so I‘m glad things worked out the way they did, but I can‘t help but wish that someone had been strongly encouraging him to finish these poems!

#YearofTolkien

JazzFeathers I know, l know. Still this always makes me think. Especially in today's publishing environment, many authors advocate self-publushing because they are free to do whatever they feel like. And l know that the publisher didn't really want that, but if he hadn't insisted on having a new hobbit story, it's very likely we woulnd't have The Lord of the Rings today. 7y
JazzFeathers And it's true that Tolkien might have written more of his Elder Days stories, but without The Lord of the Rings, are we really sure we readers would have ever seen them? So, the relationship between publisher and author may sometims be frustrating on both parts, but l do think there are potentialities there which don't rest anywhere else. 7y
Daisey @JazzFeathers Agreed, especially because I still consider Lord of the Rings my favorite, and without that love I don‘t think I would necessarily ever have read the poems, even if he published them during his lifetime. It‘s taken me years to get to these versions as it is. 7y
DivineDiana @JazzFeathers @Daisey Fascinating discussion! 7y
Daisey @DivineDiana It really has been fascinating. I know there are people who feel Christopher published too much of the incomplete work, but I am really grateful to have had the opportunity to better understand the process this reading has let me see. 7y

...the clear colors are gone.”

I loved these poems so much, I am aghast that the publisher‘s reader at first thought they were a translation of some ‘Celtic Geste‘ author unknown🙊, & that the verse translation was colorless 🙉, & that the prose-version summaries were ‘far superior‘🙈

*Without this setback, we would most likely have never gotten The Lord of the Rings, as work went forward on the Silmarillion instead, but 🤭😱

Amabear Tell me about your coffee cup! 7y
Daisey @DivaDiane I enjoy the Silmarillion, but I agree it‘s not the easiest book to get through. At this point, I actually think I like this book better, but I‘m cautious to recommend it because all of my other reading has prepared me for the stories in verse. This book is mainly Children of Hurin and Beren & Luthien in verse form with commentary by Christopher Tolkien. So, it would mainly depend on how you liked those stories. 7y
Daisey @Amabear I‘ve been playing around making quote mugs by decorating cheap mugs with oil based sharpies and baking them. It‘s a fun way to personalize them. 7y
DivaDiane Thank you for the clarification. I think I would actually enjoy the stories in verse. I read a lot of poetry, so I‘m pretty used to it. 7y
Amabear @Daisey I love that! Does the sharpie make it through the wash well? 7y

JazzFeathers So true. As l often say, l'm not a poetry gal. I mostly don't understand poetry, which is probably why l don't enjoy it. But, maybe because Tolkien's poetry is in fact stories, l'm loving this book. The form of the poem, the sound, the rhythm adds to the sheer story elements. It's beautiful. And Luthien is awesome! And Beren and Luthien are an awesome couple. 7y

A grilled chicken fajita bowl for supper and then Cantos 5 & 6 of “The Lay of Leithian” make for a pretty enjoyable evening. I love all of the detail in this long poetic version. I‘m also sure Luthien is now officially my answer for anyone who says there aren‘t enough women in Tolkien‘s work. They may be few, but they are mighty!

#YearofTolkien

JazzFeathers I so agree with this! People criticise Tolkien for his women because most readers only read The Hobbit and LOTR (where, anyway, we have Galadriel and Eowyn!). But reading his less read works l've noticed that Tolkien's women may be fewer than men in numbers, but they are always powerful characters. They always make their choices independently, they often are wiser then men, and mostly they get their way. Sound like strong female characters to me! 7y

Some of the poem revisions definitely heightened the intensity of certain aspects.

Daisey To assuage his sorrow and to sate his rage,
for his heart was hot with the hurts of his folk,
then Hurin‘s son took the helm of his sire
and weapons weighty for the wielding of men,
and he went to the woods with warrior-Elves,
and far in the forest his feet led him
into black battle yet a boy in years.
Ere manhood‘s measure he met and he slew
Orcs of Angband and evil things
that roamed and ravened on the realm‘s borders.

JazzFeathers True, eh? I was thinking the same. Although l've liked the story since first l read the book, l've really come to appreciate its depth over these multiple reads. It's an awesome story. And l agree, the poem version is the absolute best! 7y

Christopher is absolutely right. This revision of the opening of the poem is a lot stronger, involving, cruel and visceral.

I‘m starting the second version of The Children of Hurin this morning. I have a busy weekend of visiting family planned, but here‘s hoping I can make time to finish this section today.

JazzFeathers Starting it right now 😁 7y
Daisey @JazzFeathers Still reading it in short chunks around everything else this weekend and also really enjoying it. 7y

'Twas Turin that towering on the tarn's margins
Up high o'er the head of the hushed water
Now falling faintly, let flare and echo
A song of sorrow and sad splendour,
The dirge of Beleg's deadthless glory.
There wondrous wove he words enchanted
That woods and water waked and answeted,
The rocks were wrung with ruth for Beleg.

JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey @InLibrisVeritas How are you faring with the sections, gals? I'm thinking l might have miscalculated the length of the daily parts and maybe l should have give 2 days for each chapter+commentary (l thought the poem would be quicker to read). What do you think? 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers I had that same problem last book and had to add more time, so it‘s fine by me if you add time to each section. 7y
Daisey I would be completely ok with that. I‘ll probably be behind no matter what this week since it‘s finals week and our last full week of school. Today was one of those 13-14 hour days and I still have a few things to do now that I‘m home. 7y

I'll be honest... l'm shocked how much l'm loving this!
We've read Turin's story (which is not a cheerful one) four times already, but this one in the form of a poem is simply, absolutely, utterly beautiful ❤❤❤

Daisey I absolutely agree! 💕 7y

Beleg is one of my favourite characters among all of Tolkien's and it was delightful reading more about him in tonight's chapter. Especially considering that (with the exception of The Children of Hurin, the book) we don't actually see a lot of him in the early versions of the stories.

JazzFeathers I've read a few version so far and every time stupid me hope this time Turin won't killer him 😢 7y
Daisey I know exactly what you mean! They carried him away from the camp, and my first thought was hope that this meant the results would be different. 7y
