The Drunken Botanist
The Drunken Botanist | Amy Stewart
Sake began with a grain of rice. Scotch emerged from barley, tequila from agave, rum from sugarcane, bourbon from corn. Thirsty yet? In The Drunken Botanist, Amy Stewart explores the dizzying array of herbs, flowers, trees, fruits, and fungi that humans have, through ingenuity, inspiration, and sheer desperation, contrived to transform into alcohol over the centuries. Of all the extraordinary and obscure plants that have been fermented and distilled, a few are dangerous, some are downright bizarre, and one is as ancient as dinosaursbut each represents a unique cultural contribution to our global drinking traditions and our history. This fascinating concoction of biology, chemistry, history, etymology, and mixologywith more than fifty drink recipes and growing tips for gardenerswill make you the most popular guest at any cocktail party.

Te Araroa kilometers tramped: 848.4 of 3005.3

Books completed on trail: 15

I listened to the audiobook and flipped along in the ebook for the illustrations. So many interesting tidbits. Information overload! I need to buy a physical copy for the pretty illustrations and to keep in my cocktail cabinet. Lots of recipes to try. #rbdigital

Funny, engaging read about the history and botany of plants used in booze. Will teach you things and add many liquors to your wishlist! After reading, I just tried Drambuie for the first time and it's fantastic.

A fun little encyclopedia of plants & drinks. I probably wouldn't have read this if not for book club, and definitely not cover-to-cover. I would, however, recommend it if you're really into the relationship between your produce & your food, which I know many people are. It gave me many fun facts to consider & a lot of different liquors and recipes I'd like to try. Also, it's a really neat-looking book, so it's worth having on the shelf.

I finally made it to Paper Skyscraper in SouthEnd. It‘s only taken me 6 years, despite working 1/2 mile away. This store is dangerous. Paper, books, and knick knacks! Looking forward to sending letters to my pen pals on proper stationery instead of notebook paper! 😂😂 Thank you (I think) to the person who mentioned they had books (and I‘m sorry I can‘t remember who that was😔).

Found this connection while reading this month's #EclecticReaders book so I tweeted @AmyStewart to ask. Ended up learning a little about the connections between her books, which are really fun to read, so that's pretty darn cool! Also, may have just been granted a factory full of singing Oompa Loompas, so that's neat too.

I left the house without my book and now we're waiting almost 20 minutes at the Metro on our way home! 😲 Oh wait, I left a library book in my purse. #NetteReadsinOddPlaces #NetteReadsOddly

Crinoline_Laphroaig Thank goodness for book in bag! Yesterday I got to the gym and realized I forgot to download book to my phone. Fortunately I had a couple of short stories I could listen to again 1y
jmtrivera @Crinoline_Laphroaig I did have one on my phone, but my battery has been going quickly today. That's why book lovers keep books in their bags all the time! It never hurts to be prepared! 🤣 1y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @jmtrivera We have an old mini van that doesn't have bluetooth. It's what I drive when the weather is bad and I don't want to risk the new truck. I keep a CD copy of Pride & Prejudice and also Outlander in it so I always have something to listen to! #beprepared 1y

How about a garden meme? 😄🌱🌷

1.) It‘s hard to pick a fave, so I‘ll say lilies.
2.) Brussels sprouts! And okra. And chard.
3.) I have a shared garden with the other people in my townhouse row. It‘s all flowers and a bonsai Japanese maple.
4.) See tagged book! Such a cool idea for a nonfiction book.

If you perpetuate this, please tag me @REPollock and #GardenParty so I can read your answers! 🌺🌱🌹🌿🌸🍀🌼

Just finished mowing while listening to this for #eclecticreadathon This isn't the sort of book I would normally listen to on audiobook but I am reading it for a challenge and it was available so... It definitely held my interest and I have learned quite a bit. I can't believe I have 6 hrs left, though. How many more plants can there be? Interested to see what else the book includes.

Ancient date palm planted 2000 years later!!!! So, obviously I had to check out the fate of this plant, and it turns out good ol' Methuselah is a boy but has been pollinated with a wild, modern female plant so does produce dates. For more info about Solowey's desire to plant an ancient date palm orchard, see:

This was a fun read that took a look at all the different botanical ingredients used in drinks and discussed the botanical and cultural history of each ingredient. If you like books full of trivia that make you go, "I never knew that", then this is for you. I did the audio and the narrator was excellent, but I think book version would be better. Lots of drink recipes that I wanted a copy of.
