Puffin Classics Little Women
Puffin Classics Little Women | Louisa May Alcott
Meg is the eldest and on the brink of love. Then there's tomboy Jo who longs to be a writer. Sweet-natured Beth always puts others first, and finally there's Amy, the youngest and most precocious. Together they are the March sisters. Even though money is short, times are tough and their father is away at war, their infectious sense of fun sweeps everyone up in their adventures - including Laurie, the boy next door. And through sisterly squabbles, their happy times and sad ones too, the sisters discover that growing up is sometimes very hard to do. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott is one of the twenty wonderful classic stories being reissued in Puffin Classics in March 2015.

I have watched both the 2019 (top) and the 1994 (bottom). Personally I like the 1994 version much more than the 2019 version for a number of reasons, including that the 1994 version cast Laurie better than the 2019 version. So of these two versions, which do you like better? #littlewomen #movieadaptations

Scochrane26 I‘ve only seen the recent one, somehow never watched the 1994 one. 4w

I rewatch and reread Little Women every December in memory of my Bubbe -who loved the original movie which I currently cannot find, however, the Winona I watched last night is my favorite. (I did not like the new one at all, story was fine acting…notsomuch.) I consider it a Christmas movie 😂🎄♥️🤷🏻‍♀️

Finished Little Women for a book club last month. Had such a great discussion. I definitely thought I‘d read this as a young adult, but I‘m fairly certain I had only watched the movie version 🙊 I‘m glad I read this, but it was dense. The poems and newsletter, I could have done without. Overall 4⭐️

1. Hanging out with Jo and the sisters would be a fun way to quarantine. Dressing up, reading, playing music in that place and time.
2. Taking walks even on these cold days. Listening to a book podcast, or music or just thinking.

1. I have a few! The 1994 version of “Little Women” with Winona Ryder. I just adore Jo March and my daughter Josephine is named for her. Another great one is “Misery.” Kathy Bates is simply phenomenal in it!

2. I would love to see “The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue” on the big screen. It would have beautiful cinematography and would be a tear-jerker. I love crying from movies. Haha.

It's old-fashioned and preachy, but I never get tired of Alcott's fiercely feminist story and four of my fave ladies: Meg, so good and proper, yet a little vain; Queen Jo, "a girl who was rapidly shooting up into a woman, and didn't like it" (was ever anything so relatable?); Beth aka Little #Tranquility, so-called by Useless Mr. March; and Amy, "a most important person- in her own opinion at least." #BlueCover #JumpIntoJanuary #InspiredNewYear

Little Women is a well-loved classic. Unfortunately, it failed to win me over. For me, a classic is a story that stands the test of time, one that contains characters or situations that resonate through time. Little Women felt every bit its age, and rather than a fully fleshed out novel it reads more like a series of vignettes about the March family. It is cozy and quaint, but just far too old-fashioned for my tastes. ⭐️⭐️ #ThatsClassic

AlaMich I didn‘t even like it that much when I read it as a kid. I remember thinking it was sort of dull. 13mo
MsMelissa @AlaMich this was my first time reading it and I have wondered if I may have felt differently had I read it was I was a kid, but I doubt it. I also found it dull, and that large sections could be skipped without missing a thing. 13mo

Re-read this for November #thatsclassic and I‘m so glad I did. Sure, it‘s a bit preachy and slow paced at times, but when it‘s good it‘s so very good —a warm, cozy comfort read with many enduring truths that make it a classic. It was the perfect #audiobaking accompaniment for making my Thanksgiving pies.🥧

MsMelissa I‘m struggling to finish 😢 I really don‘t like it. It reads more like a series of vignettes than a novel. 14mo

I loved this book for #ThatsClassic ❤️

I had read it a long time ago so I had forgotten basically everything (including the professor who was amazing!) I found the second part easier to relate to and less preachy, but honestly I didn‘t mind that so much. I enjoyed the family dynamics, the love they all shared, and how they tried to make each other better people. You can‘t blame the boys for wanting to be part of that :D

This was so nostalgic for me. I‘ve been so connected to these characters since I was a little girl, so reading it now was so cozy. I do feel I was tough on Amy and happily accept my mom saying I‘m an Amy.

Admittedly it was a little long so I can see why not everyone in #thatsclassic loved it, but it was like putting on an old sweater. I also forgot how much I‘m in to the Professor 😏

This month we are reading Little Women for #ThatsClassic hosted by @Annie1215

This is my second read, but the first was when I was much younger so I remember little of what happened. I have just finished part one and I am liking it so far, despite a lot of lessons in goodness and morality, and the girls being so young.

Interestingly all the parts I have vague recollections of seem to be in part two! ☺️

Not a popular view, but I don't enjoy this book. It's too sweet and too many moral lessons for me. I don't dislike any of the characters, but Jo is the only one I feel slightly interested in, I'm not engaged in their story. Themes are good, family, being there for one another, just not enjoying how the lessons and themes are written in this story. Hey there #thatsclassic book club readers!

I hope everyone is enjoying their reading so far. This has been a read I‘ve been looking forward to.

Which is your favorite sister and who do you identify with most (if they are different answers)

I always thought I related to Jo best, but maybe that‘s because she was my favorite. My mom has told me she thinks I‘m a Jo/Amy hybrid - though I wonder if she was just saying that because I like Jo best 😂

Bookworm54 I‘m really liking it so far. But all the girls are so different it‘s hard to say who is my favourite! Jo seems the most obvious one to choose though. :) Not sure who I would relate to the most though so far. Maybe when they are older I will have more of an idea? 1y
Butterfinger I'm the mother hen like Meg, the aspiring writer like Jo, the extreme introvert like Beth, and the care-what-others-think like Amy. My favorite will always be Jo, but I think I am most like Meg. 1y
Annie1215 @Bookworm54 can‘t wait to hear where you land with this! 1y
See All 12 Comments
Annie1215 @Butterfinger Meg is an underrated character. She‘s the sister you want in your side. 1y
KVanRead Jo has always been my favorite and I always wanted to be her, but I think I‘ve turned out to be more of a Meg. I also relate more to Marmie now, as a mother of teenage girls 🙂 1y
MsMelissa I‘ve read about 100 pages. The book isn‘t exactly what I expected. I thought the sisters were older 😂. I am not sure I relate to any of them. BTW - so far at least, I do not like Amy. 1y
bthegood This is a hard read for me, it's not as engaging as I remember it....Jo seems to be the most interesting to me. 1y
Annie1215 @Book_Fiend_Melissa thus my reaction when my mom called me Amy 😂 but her perspective is that she is creative and passionate 1y
Annie1215 @KVanRead Marmie doesn‘t get enough cool points 1y
Annie1215 @bthegood I‘m sorry it‘s been a tough read, I hope it will pick up for you! 1y
eeclayton Like @bthegood I find myself struggling a little, although for me it's a first read. It's not that it's not enjoyable, but it's so didactic at some points that I've decided to put it aside for a few days and look for something intended for adults. 1y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I read this earlier this year but thought I'd chime in. I'm an Amy with a side of Jo. I like pretty things, care about my appearance, and am a bit artistic. I also have grand aspirations for a life of "more" than I have now. I'm independent, one of the guys, and more of a tomboy like Jo (despite having pretty things) ? 1y

My 3 sisters and I used to play Little women with our Madame Alexander dolls. My younger brothers would fetch things for us to make the house.
I am so grateful for my seven siblings. We miss each other so much, not having visited one another except through zoom since last April. The Cape is where we traditionally gather-my parent‘s old home.

MidnightBookGirl I work for an Assisted Living facility doing activities, and I have a lovely couple who Zoom with all 8‌ of their children. Started this one today for #ThatsClassic

It may be the public domain version, but I am pretty confident it has all the content even if it isn‘t the most beautiful! I am intrigued to see if I like this as much as I remember liking it when I was younger ☺️

I figured I would aim for a couple of chapters per day

I plan to go for longer periods at the weekend for my other planned Nov reads (Burn, and A Discovery of Witches)

#ParanormalLoveCrew #PLC

Annie1215 I‘m trying to figure my schedule out now too, a lot of read alongs 😬 1y
Sace I think this is the version I have too, but I'm trying to figure out how my slow reading self can manage this, Northanger Abbey AND my LMPBC books 😂 1y
Bookworm54 @Sace @Annie1215 this has 47 chapters. So I thought if I aim to get through 2 chapters a day I should finish by the end of the month ☺️ I may not be good at sticking to this for longer than a week 😂 1y
jmtrivera I don't know why, but there is something about the simplicity in the public domain covers that I like. 1y
