The Red Garden
The Red Garden | Alice Hoffman
The Red Garden introduces us to the luminous and haunting world of Blackwell, Massachusetts, capturing the unexpected turns in its history and in our own lives. In exquisite prose, Hoffman offers a transforming glimpse of small-town America, presenting us with some three hundred years of passion, dark secrets, loyalty, and redemption in a web of tales where characters' lives are intertwined by fate and by their own actions. From the town's founder, a brave young woman from England who has no fear of blizzards or bears, to the young man who runs away to New York City with only his dog for company, the characters in The Red Garden are extraordinary and vivid: a young wounded Civil War soldier who is saved by a passionate neighbor, a woman who meets a fiercely human historical character, a poet who falls in love with a blind man, a mysterious traveler who comes to town in the year when summer never arrives. At the center of everyones life is a mysterious garden where only red plants can grow, and where the truth can be found by those who dare to look. Beautifully crafted, shimmering with magic, The Red Garden is as unforgettable as it is moving.

I enjoyed this— it reminded me of Rutherford‘s novelized histories but more interesting, as Catherine Moreland from Northanger Abbey says, without “…the quarrels of popes and kings…the men all so good for nothing and hardly any women at all…” rather, there are a lot of very strong women & the stories focus on local history & the way our stories become myths

This book is an interesting structure. It starts off with each chapter being a short story about different people. The common theme being the red garden and the town of Blackwell. Towards the end of the book it coalesces into one story. This book was definitely engaging. It was also a rough read in terms of subject matter. If you have come to this book for magic, you will be disappointed. This is not that.

I am by no means a fan of short stories but the way Hoffman told the story of a town through vignettes of its families from its founding in the 1700s to today was an intriguing concept that really worked for me.

A luminous story of a 300-year history of Blackwell, Massachusetts, from its founding through its growth. Told from the POV of different inhabitants in different time periods. Hoffman is so different from any author I‘ve read - her writing is like an intricate and magical painting. #authoramonth2021 @Soubhiville #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

I'm glad I started with this because it was okay but whatever I read next will likely be better. It's the story of the people living in a town in the Berkshires. From the 16xx's to present. It's good. I liked that it's basically short stories. The #audiobook is read by Nancy Travis. She does a good job.

Told in chronological order from the 1700s to the 1980s, this book is comprised of interconnecting short stories. At the center of the stories is the red garden sprinkled with magic. I was reminded that we may never know how our actions today impact those in the future, but we are all connected. I recommend this read while suntanning on a beach, as a passenger on a road trip, or relaxing on a lazy Sunday.

I wasn‘t expecting the short story format of this book, but I enjoyed it. The overlapping elements of each story were fun to tie together.

With that said, however, the simplistic way Alice Hoffman brought male and female characters together (i.e., when in doubt, make them have sex) really, really didn‘t work for me. And while she seemed to want to have the same themes run through the whole book, she just created repetition, not an echo. ⭐️⭐️-1/2

If I‘d done my research before deciding to read this book, I would‘ve realized that it‘s not a novel. It‘s a series of stories based on a particular place (Blackwell, MA) & the generations of families who lived there. “The Red Garden” is basically Alice Hoffman showing off. With every chapter it‘s like she‘s saying, “Don‘t I write fabulous characters? Don‘t you wish you could read more about every one of them? Well, that‘s too bad!” Dammit. 😖

monalyisha My favorite chapter was a “Beauty & the Beast” story that takes place in 1956, between a smart, driven, beautiful redhead & a “hideous”, reclusive mountain man. So good. 🥀 7y

Legit looked up the weather & the high for today & planned my outdoor chores around that. I found myself silently chanting, “I‘m a bear / I‘m a bear” all the while. Thanks for my new mantra, Alice Hoffman!

Note: I should mention that my outdoor chores started & ended with emptying the litterbox into the compost heap, and it took approximately 2 seconds. #winterwimp #itsactuallystillfall

DarcysMom 😂🤣😂🤣 7y
Clare-Dragonfly What kind of litter do you use? I'd love to be able to stop using plastic bags for litter trash so if you can compost litter, that's one more point in favor of definitely getting a compost bin someday... 7y

Alice Hoffman @ tonight‘s author event:

“My characters are always trying to get the hell out of Massachusetts & they can‘t do it.”

My mom had me when she was 19. Growing up, she always told me to “get the hell out of Worcester (MA).” I did it; I moved to Rhode Island (so far away! 😂), but I still commute back for work every day. I actually love my hometown (it‘s like loving a pug: it‘s so ugly it‘s cute). But this sentiment still made me laugh.

Today, I‘m using an anniversary card as my bookmark. This morning, when I grabbed my book off my nightstand, I was suffering from a clear case of “OMG YOU‘RE GONNA BE LATE; GRAB WHATEVER‘S CLOSEST TO YOU & RUN!” Story of my life. 🙄 If I keep acquiring more & more bookmarks, eventually one of them will end up being the closest thing to me. More of a series of linked short stories than a real novel. The book begins with the founding of a small town in Massachusetts in 1750 and follows descendants of the founders through to "present day." (The book was pubbed in 2011.) I loved this book. It was the kind of book that was so engrossing, I couldn't hear or see people standing right in front of me talking to me. ("Mom. Mom. MOM.")

Less a novel than it is a collection of interrelated short stories all taking place over almost 250 years in one small town in the Berkshires. This is the second Hoffman book I‘ve read in this style and I quite enjoy it because she does it so well. The book served as nice palate cleanser as well after the intensity of Killers of the Flower Moon.
