A Wrinkle in Time: The Graphic Novel
A Wrinkle in Time: The Graphic Novel | Madeleine L'Engle
The world already knows Meg and Charles Wallace Murry, Calvin O'Keefe, and the three Mrs--Who, Whatsit, and Which--the memorable and wonderful characters who fight off a dark force and save our universe in the Newbery award-winning classic A Wrinkle in Time. But in 50 years of publication, the book has never been illustrated. Now, Hope Larson takes the classic story to a new level with her vividly imagined interpretations of tessering and favorite characters like the Happy Medium and Aunt Beast. Perfect for old fans and winning over new ones, this graphic novel adaptation is a must-read. This graphic novel is best read on a tablet device.

“Maybe I don't like being different, but I don't want to be like everybody else, either.“

blurb

This story has a great message about love and can be relatable to students. Meg has a hard time at school in the beginning and the students could find comfort in that. Meg is able to gain her independence in freedom throughout the story and that is very impactful to younger students who are trying to figure out who they are.

A Wrinkle in Time tells the story of Meg Murry, her brother Charles Wallace, and their friend Calvin as they search for Meg's missing father. Using a “tesseract,“ they travel across time and space to rescue him from a dark force.

50 years ago 🤯 I read this book and my life ( reading and otherwise) was changed forever. Nothing I‘d read before had transported me quite like this to another world. My original copy fell apart, this is a version I bought my boys when they were the same age I was back then. Today I‘m going to see it on stage at Stratford and I feel like there will be tears 🤦🏻‍♀️ I‘m already emotional thinking about it

mcctrish @DivineDiana it was so special! I still love fantasy because if it 1y
mcctrish @marleed I‘m so happy we live so close to this amazing theatre 1y
mcctrish @Amiable it still holds up so well ( written in 1962?) ❤️❤️ 1y
Tamra 💙 It‘s so wonderful to think back on “the book” which made us adult readers. 1y
mcctrish @Tamra that‘s exactly what my husband and I talked about all the way home 1y
kwmg40 I live close to Stratford too and will try to see this play before the season closes. I love the book too! 1y
mcctrish @kwmg40 I‘d recommend Rent or King Lear above this truthfully unless you have kids this age or get a great deal ( they have an on line sale button that drops down to look for cheaper seats) I‘m debating Frankenstein revisited right now 1y
kwmg40 I did see Lear early in the season and loved Paul Gross in it! I do look for discounted tickets, and I‘ll keep your suggestions in mind. 1y
mcctrish @kwmg40 he was awesome!!!! We got great prices on all the tickets with their summer seat sale ❤️❤️ 1y
kwmg40 Glad to hear you loved Paul Gross as Lear too! I too managed to get a discount ticket for that show. Such a good deal! 1y
mcctrish @kwmg40 can I ask where you are? I‘m TVDSB 1y
kwmg40 @mcctrish I‘m in Waterloo, and I‘m not actually a teacher but I work for a math software company. That‘s why I have an interest in math education (from the other discussion)! 1y
mcctrish @kwmg40 Waterloo is easy peasy to Stratford and a pretty drive too ( my oldest was at Laurier and I sometimes drove London to Stratford to see a friend and then to Waterloo to pick him up) 1y
kwmg40 @mcctrish I‘m familiar with the route! My husband and I had lived in both Stratford and London for short periods and commuted between those places and Waterloo. It was a brutal drive in the winter, though! 1y

I adore this story & am happy it‘s being remade in new media so it‘ll be accessible to more audiences, but I didn‘t really like this or the movie version. For a MG GN I found this exceptionally hard to read. It took a lot of concentration, I had to take a lot of breaks, & if I didn‘t already know the story so well I‘m not sure I would have found it easy to follow. #BBRCMiddleSchoolIceIceBaby #Pantone2022IcedCoffee @LibrarianRyan @Clwojick

I don't really like to do "bad" reviews. This was my first graphic novel and I really can't decide if it's just the format or if one of the books I loved from 5th grade just hasn't aged well with me. There were a few parts that I enjoyed but overall it wasn't for me. I'm highlighting two parts I liked from the book and choosing to leave the bad behind. Aunt Beast is a mood for me.

IamIamIam I'm listening to this and I hadn't read it as a kid but it's definitely not something I would have enjoyed then. My son was listening with me today & seemed interested so maybe we can try this as he's a super reluctant reader. Don't give up hope on graphic novels just yet! 😁 3y
terryduncan5719 I loved this as a kid too! I don't even want to try to read it now! Don't want to lose the magic!😁 3y
PaperbackPirate I reread this as an adult and it was such a disappointment. Loved it as a kid. 😕 3y

I have to admit I have never been able to read much of the actual classic book. So I'm sure the full version of the novel is much more detailed and explains more than the graphic novel adaptation. I liked the illustrations as well.

A mind bending adventure! This format gives the scenes different pacing than the novel and clearer differentiation b/w the places. It pares the text down to the plot and leaves out most descriptions. More tenderness b/w Meg and Calvin. The sinister characters look less sinister once committed to paper, but overall still plenty weird. Good for readers with siblings or as an intro to sci-fi. #dw2020reads

This was beautifully Illustrated. I suppose I‘m a bit of a traditionalist though in that the descriptive language was certainly missed.

cozypunk Great observation. I hear you about the descriptive language... here it comes... buuuut I know plenty of people who want to cut straight to the plot and dialogue. I love that classics come in so many different formats. 4y

This graphic novel adaptation mostly made me nostalgic and want to reread the original book. It didn‘t seem to add or bring out anything new. I would really think that they could have at least done something with color, but no.

There is an interview with Madeleine L‘Engle and a speech she gave printed at the end, though, and those are certainly worth reading.

Huh. It just now occurs to me that Charles Wallace is probably on the autism spectrum. Maybe Meg, too.

Also, Madeleine L‘Engle is the reason that no matter how many times I read Hamlet or Jane Eyre, the names Fortinbras and Rochester will always be names for large, excellent dogs.

Graphic novel adaptation.

Meg Murray‘s father has disappeared and she‘s not sure he‘ll ever come back. One dark and stormy night, Meg and her brother encounter three strange beings who explain that Meg‘s father is trapped on a dark planet. Meg, Charles Wallace, and their new friend Cal, tesser (travel through time and space) to attempt to rescue Mr. Murray without falling into the clutches of IT, the evil force behind the encroaching darkness.

abbielistenstobooks I bought this for my dyslexic niece, who prefers graphic novels. It's a good adaptation! 6y

This felt clunky and the illustrations didn‘t do much for me. I like the original novel, but I‘m not devoted to it or anything, so I‘m not coming at this from an angle of “there could never be an adaptation that would satisfy me”. My 12-year old daughter absolutely loved this graphic novel, though.

I read the graphic novel before the book as a recommendation made by a YouTuber I follow.I started the book and it is easier to understand it. However, didn't like the illustrations, sometimes there were a lot of "unnecessary drawings in some parts and in other there were not enough. Some characters were confusing.I don't understand why Meg's parents needed to cross the fifth dimension, why Charles was different & ending was meh 2.95⭐️

This was delightful! It's an intelligent story that teaches children about good vs evil and the importance of love and family. And that being smart, being good at science and math, being different, and even having faults are all good and very useful things. I read this at the same time as the novel by Madeleine L'Engle. Both were equally enjoyable. #graphicnovels #YAFANTASY #sciencefiction #middlegradefiction
