Villette | Charlotte Bront

Lucy Snowe is not a kick-ass, badass, rah-rah #heroine. She's just plain, shy, introspective, deeply observant, intelligent, sensitive & ill-adjusted to life. I just feel her & feel for her so much. This book is like the spiritual sister to Dostoyevsky's Notes from Underground. No enforced positivity or redemption; just human psychology at its most brutal & mysterious. #maylovesclassics @Sarah83 @Bambolina_81

Sophoclessweetheart I can‘t wait to read this one! 2y
saresmoore Very nice assessment! I‘m going to read this as my next classic and I can‘t wait. I‘ve decided I‘m going on a boarding school kick. 🤔 2y
Billypar Spiritual sister to Notes from Underground? Sold! 😃 2y

Bambolina_81 Villette is a wonderful wonderful book and I wish it and Lucy Snow were as well known as Jane Eyre. 2y
rohit-sawant Meaning to read this for so long! 2y
batsy @Wanderingwithwords @rohit-sawant I hope you enjoy! 2y
batsy @saresmoore Thank you! Boarding schools are irresistible... A hothouse of obsession and hostility, what's not to like 😆 2y
batsy @Billypar Lucy does strike me as an underground woman in some ways; she's very removed from society even while attempting to live within it. 2y
batsy @Bambolina_81 Agreed! 2y
erzascarletbookgasm This just made me want to read it soon. Will put this further up my TBR 😊 2y
Sophoclessweetheart @Bambolina_81 I‘d definitely be up for that! X 2y
batsy @Bambolina_81 I've read it a few times and am focusing on books I haven't read before for litsyclassics this year, so will opt out for now. But I hope you guys enjoy it if you do :) 2y
rubyslippersreads @Bambolina_81 This is on my #litsyclassics list, so I'd be interested in a readalong. 😊 2y
rubyslippersreads @batsy @saresmoore ❤️ boarding school books! 2y
merelybookish @Bambolina_81 I'd also join in for a readalong. I read it years ago. It's on my list to re-read for #litsyclassics. 2y
rohit-sawant @Bambolina_81 Count me in, too! 😀 2y
saresmoore @Bambolina_81 So in for a readalong! You too, @emilyhaldi ? 2y
emilyhaldi Sure why not!! @saresmoore @Bambolina_81 😄📖 2y
Billypar @Bambolina_81 Yeah- I'm interested- good idea ☺️ 2y

A Suitable Boy | Vikram Seth
post image

#septembowie #slowburn

This is the longest novel I ever read. 1448 pages! A whole 500 or so more than Anna Karenina. I enjoyed every moment - although it took me a long time. It follows four families over a couple of years and one is trying to find their daughter a suitable boy to marry. It was 20 years ago that I read it but I remember I felt very drawn in to the domestic worlds of the families. If you #lovebigbooks try it!

Cinfhen OMG! I can't even imagine @minkyb This might interest you @OSChamberlain 😊 2y
Marchpane That's an achievement! 👏👏👏 2y
Reggie I freaking loved this book. She doesn't choose the one you think. I enjoyed that in the middle of all this, he writes about the Tamil family who speaks in rhyme. Have you read his other one? The one about a musician who starts an affair with his ex who is now married? Totally worlds apart from this one. 2y

OSChamberlain @Cinfhen 😱😱😱🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤 Yessssss!! 2y
Centique @Reggie I‘m so glad to find another fan of this book! I just picked up his other book in a second hand shop - looking forward to reading it 😊 2y
Centique @Cinfhen I was working in a bookshop when it came out and people were shocked by its length so I wanted to prove it could be done! 😊 It turned out to be great. 2y
Centique @OSChamberlain just been looking at your books on your profile - this is a walk in the park compared to Moby Dick! You‘ll love it I think! 2y
batsy I loved this one and so glad you and @Reggie liked it, as well :) I remember using this for a past challenge about big books, I think 😁 I was also floored by how different his other book is 2y
OSChamberlain @Centique I‘m sure I will!! Glad to have this beautiful community to turn me on to books I might otherwise never hear of! 🖤 2y
Centique @batsy excellent! It‘s such a nice feeling for me to find people who love the same books 💕 Can‘t wait to read An Equal Music now. @Reggie 2y
Centique @OSChamberlain me too! I love this place. 2y
OSChamberlain @batsy Yet another one for me to check out 🖤🖤🖤 2y
TrishB @batsy @Reggie loved this and An Equal Music, awesome books. 2y
batsy @OSChamberlain Yes! 😁👍 2y
batsy @TrishB 👍I was looking up An Equal Music and was happy to find an older post of yours 😁 2y
Ms_T I‘m really drawn to this book! 2y
minkyb @Cinfhen - @MrBook may be the #MayorOfLitsy but you are its #BigBookMonitor ‼️🤣😘 2y
Cinfhen Hahaha🤣😂🤣😂😂 @minkyb 😘😘😘thanks for that #MorningLaugh 2y
Cinfhen And I knew the lovely @TrishB had already read this one!!! #DUH 2y
MrBook @minkyb 😂👏🏻🙌🏻 I believe I tagged this book in an #AuthorPotpourri post 😁👍🏻! 2y
TrishB @Cinfhen I like big books......you're all singing now aren't you 😂 2y
minkyb Indeed @TrishB. And let‘s not forget twerking as well! 2y
TrishB @minkyb had a little laugh at the thought of that in the office! 2y
LeeRHarry I loved this and was lucky enough to find it in 3 volumes secondhand so I didn't have to lug around the whole thing all the time 😊 I enjoyed An Equal Music too 😊 2y
ChasingOm 😳😳😳 2y
Centique @Ms_T have you read it? It‘s really good. 👍😊 2y
Centique @LeeRHarry yay! I think 3 volumes is a much better idea 2y
Centique @ChasingOm yes the size is really 😳😳😳😂 2y
Ms_T @Centique I haven‘t read it but definitely will in the very near future 😊 2y
Jeg Good for you. I have a really hard time with thick books. I usually avoid them. 🙃 2y
shawnmooney Chunkster indeed! I am now totally into Indian literature so I think I'll have to tackle this one some day! 2y
Centique @shawnmooney I hope you love it too. 🤞 2y
Dragon I made it to around page 1000 and gave up, I regret that now and wished I had finished 😩 2y
Centique @Dragon oh what a shame! I have done the same thing though with other books - it‘s a big chunk of time. 1000 pages still counts of course - that‘s like two books anyway! 2y
Dragon Thanks @Centique that's a good way to look at it . 😀 2y
Ms_T This is a Kindle Daily Deal today so I‘ve bought it 😃 2y
Centique @Ms_T oh wow! Hope you enjoy it. I just remember it was like going to spend a month visiting these families ☺️ 2y

Frankenstein: ; Or, The Modern Prometheus | Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley
post image

I read this for my classic lit book club. It is much different than all of the movies, although the 1994 version with DiNiro as the monster is closest. (We watched it at our meeting.) The book was interesting. I thought Frankenstein made some pretty bad decisions. He made a lot of his own problems! #duh This was my F for #LitsyAtoZ #classics

UM. I'm watching HGTV as I get ready this morning and on Custom Built they just did a custom reading nook and I'm DYING! How amazing is it?!

The American was tying his tie as we both watched the reveal, and I guarantee he saw the look in my eyes.
"I'm leaving before you start knocking down more walls, " he said, kissing me and walking out.
"A reading nook wouldn't need walls knocked down!" I called after him.

drokka The nook is cool. I'm concerned that in this one, there's not a lot of evidence of 'reading'. At mine, those other walls would be floor-ceiling shelving. 3y
Dolly I'd add a curtain to the front so people like that guy wouldn't talk to me ! 😂 3y
Meg11726 I have a reading nook but not nearly as neat as that one!!! 3y

Alfoster 🎁😍😍😍 3y
jpease89 WOAH. Well you've got a killer summer reading studio... you obvs need one for the winter 🙄 #duh 3y
Jenshootsweddings @drokka the bottom drawer opens up and is actually a step so you can teach above the nook to put books on top .,, that's thinking of everything! 3y
Jenshootsweddings @Dolly my curtain would need a lock with a peephole 3y
melbeautyandbooks That is awesome! 3y
