Molly is your average 15-year-old, wanting to join a band, live under the radar at school, & being totally embarrassed by her parents being 'The Rocking Stockings' a Christmas band. Back when Molly was just a small child & her parents were known as the 'Brussel Shouts', they made a Christmas record called 'Love Your Elf' & Molly starred as 'Little Elf Girl'. A fact Molly has been trying to hide ever since. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf Now she hears that unbelievably the song has been chosen for the soundtrack to the latest Christmas romcom out this year & her cover could be blown. If her schoolmates & neighbours find out she was the 'Little Elf Girl', her life won't be worth living.

This is definitely not my usual reading fare but I quite enjoyed it. There were some parts that made me laugh out loud, there's lots of references to British pop culture, & there was so much going
22h
OutsmartYourShelf on - not just the main plot, although I thought that the twist was a bit obvious. There's a smidgeon of romance but it's age-appropriate if a bit corny. I'm not the target audience but it was a pretty good read & definitely great for my Christmas readathons for the seasonal setting. 4🌟

When Guy Haines meets Charles Bruno on the train he has no idea his life is about to unravel. On his way to see his estranged wife to hopefully obtain a divorce, Haines finds himself confiding in fellow passenger Bruno almost against his will. Bruno has his own trouble, namely his father, & during a quiet meal in Bruno's compartment, Bruno comes up with the idea of swapping murders.

OutsmartYourShelf After all, they just met & no-one can tie them together or assign a motive: “I kill your wife and you kill my father!............Perfect alibis!“. Ah but the 'best laid plans of mice & men'.

I've never seen the Hitchcock film so I've nothing to compare it to, but this was a book of two halves for me really. The first half was a bit slow & a bit disjointed to me & I was in two minds whether to carry on, but the second half was much better.
3d
OutsmartYourShelf The descent of Charles Bruno into complete psychopathy, & the inevitable tightening of the psychological torment of a guilty conscience around Guy Haines as he imagines that everyone knows were well done. Personally I found 'The Talented Mr Ripley' a better read but this was still quite good. 3.5🌟

This looked a promising thriller in the synopsis & I really enjoyed books set in/on isolated areas. I found this one a little underwhelming though. Although the idea is good, the POVs for Dee & Tori were not differentiated enough by their characters, & I had to keep checking who was narrating a particular chapter as it could have been either. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf I also found it a bit all over the place in terms of pacing & plot progression & it felt very haphazard at times. The 'team challenges' also seemed to take a back seat to general griping & sniping between characters. Disappointing. 2⭐

TWs: death, injury detail, drug use (minor references), strong language.

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, Serpent's Tail/Viper/Profile Books, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

This penultimate (for now) book in the series examines the dark side of....Morris dancing. Yes the traditionally twee pastime involving dressing in a costume, with bells, & banging wooden sticks together! I might have been more incredulous had I not read a book earlier this year (or last year) about the old practice of wassailing & its more sinister side.

OutsmartYourShelf Merrily is still dealing with the coterie of modernisers within the Church who want to root out anything 'medieval', including Deliverance aka exorcism. Elsewhere her daughter Jane continues to not return her boyfriend's calls or texts & then worries (not irrationally) that he may have moved on. 3.5🌟

This is a comparatively short read for a crime thriller at under 300 pages but it packs a punch. I was simultaneously sympathetic to Madeleine & suspicious that she might not be being completely truthful. It was fairly fast-paced due to the length but I thought that the ending was a little weak. 4🌟

This is the fourth of the books set in the Jolvix world that I've read, & it's probably my second least favourite. The story line is good but I disliked the main character. Granted she has issues to do with both her childhood & the death of her first love, but she is absolutely horrible to ex-colleague & friend Ted at times. I found myself a bit irritated with her to be honest. 3.5 🌟

TWs: death, discussion of suicide, drug use/alcoholism.

Celia wakes up in a house with a husband & a daughter she doesn't recognise. When a nasty neighbour, who lives next door to the restaurant Celia supposedly owns, is murdered it looks like Celia is being primed to take the blame. Can she work out who she really is & who the killer is?

Allie has arranged to go to the beach for her birthday with friends Madison & Cam, however when the two friends' boyfriends tag along, Allie is annoyed. (Continued)

OutsmartYourShelf She falls asleep on the way there & when she wakes up they are not at the beach - Brad (Cam's bf) has driven them to an isolated cabin in the woods. Horror movie fan Allie is already uneasy & when a stranger starts trying to break into the cabin that night, it looks like big screen horror has become real.

OutsmartYourShelf Maggie wakes up in a shipping container with a group of women. None of them know each other or where they are, but they are all wearing t-shirts with a number on the back. They are finally released into The Maze, a deadly obstacle course, where they are told that if they want to see their loved ones alive again, they have to complete the course within 12 hours.

OutsmartYourShelf The synopsis sold me on this one & it was one of my few pre-orders for 2023. Maybe I was expecting too much, but it was a bit of a let-down. I didn't really care for the Celia storyline which was rather boring, the Allie & Maggie storylines were much better in my opinion, but it was the final reveal which was the worst - it was all a bit pedestrian. It was good but not great & left me feeling a bit unsatisfied really.

The Stromberg family suddenly pick up & move from their comfortable life to an isolated house, surrounded by pine forests, in northern Sweden. Although their mother & father seem happy enough, the youngest Stromberg is angry at being torn away from their old life. At first the surprisingly large house is part-occupied by a group of children on conservation work, but when they leave, the Strombergs are left alone with just the weird housekeeper.

OutsmartYourShelf This is quite an atmospheric read. The author conveys the sense of isolation & feeling surrounded by malevolence quite well. The reader never learns the narrator's first name or anything else about them really, & maybe it's personal bias, but I felt as if it was a teenage girl. Not that it really matters. I enjoyed it & an extra star for choosing that ending. The author could have wrapped it all up nicely but the actual ending is rather bleak.

OutsmartYourShelf A book that I will probably re-read at some point. 4🌟

TWs: animal death, gore, blood, mention of miscarriage.

Sorry to my team #HollyJollyReaders for going missing for the last week or so, but I tested positive for Covid on Christmas Eve & had been feeling a bit off before. Still not back to normal but I do have some reviews to catch up on.

BFFs Sam & Ally reunite with new friend, Sandy, (whom they met in Book 2 Camp Whispering Pines), when she invites the two friends to spend the weekend before Christmas at her family's house on Orcas Island. It doesn't take long before Sam manages to sniff out the rumour of a ghost at a nearby mansion, but this time, it seems the living may be the real danger. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf The sixth book in the series serves up another fun helping of Sam & Ally's antics. As Ally says, the mysteries just seem to find Sam, she doesn't need to go looking. This series of modern-day 'Nancy Drew' adventures continues to deliver & readers 8-12 years of age will love it. 4🌟
