I absolutely enjoyed this book! I am so glad I decided to read this even after disliking the author's other book 'L.A Weather' that I read in 2024.

I found this story to be enticing right from the opening and in between the different timelines, Escandon kept my interest with both the story and the characterizations of not just Libertad but all of the characters.

(2022) Here's a creepy novella about a woman on her first solo trip since her recent divorce, driving through ice and snow of a West Virginia winter and about the things she met there. It's part Mothman, part The Descent, part girl power. I'm not sure now what it was all about, but it was pretty effective in the moment. Someone oughtta make a creature feature.

Bookwomble "Creepy" was the word I thought when I saw that cover! Isn't it great? ? 2y
swynn @Bookwomble Right? It's by Trevor Henderson, who does terrific work: https://trevorhenderson.com 2y
mandarchy Along with Godzilla, my son is obsessed with Mothman and follows Trevor Henderson - he often makes clay Hendersonesque creations and they are creepy to find around the house. 2y

You never know what you‘ll come across when you‘re out on the road! These dogs weren‘t menacing but I wasn‘t taking any chances as I was outnumbered. I enjoyed this breezy, poignant memoir by a fellow driver. Recap: truckers work incredibly long, hard hours; they have mad skills; they deal with a lot of bullshit; they see beyond the myths of their personas and the country as a whole ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Tamra Cute though! 2y
Soubhiville Looks like possibly a pack of German Wirehair Pointers? Someone out hunting? I hope they found their way home ok. 2y
SamAnne Oof. Or woof? 2y

DocBrown @Soubhiville this was the driveway of a home I was delivering to. They all have their shock collars. 2y
DocBrown @SamAnne no noises - they seemed friendly enough but I wasn‘t taking any chances. 2y

Abby is on her way to meet friends at a horror convention when she encounters a snow storm and the big rig in front of her goes over the side of a bridge in the dark. She decides to climb down to see if she can help and things get scary. This was great. This was like a little nesting doll of horror. When you think she cannot put anything else in here she does and it‘s wonderful. Surprise after surprise in 122 pages. Pick!

batsy At first glance it totally looks like there's a face and the shape of a person in the laundry machine so I'm going to pretend I didn't see it 😆 2y
Reggie @batsy is it the Pocahontas face at the very top middle? That‘s who I see now that you made me look! Lol also, I think you would like this book because low key it‘s how the patriarchy lessens women and how it takes over their thoughts and this is one woman‘s fight against it by way of cryptids. 2y
batsy @Reggie Oh my god, yes. Now I feel so much better 🤣🤣 Thanks for the rec, I just added it to my list recently because of a previous review on Litsy! I'm glad it was a pick for you, too. 2y

Reggie @batsy lololololol 2y
kspenmoll I see the face!!!! Great review! Should I try it?! Horror usually leaves me with nightmares & I cannot get visuals out of my head!!!! 2y
Reggie @kspenmoll as much as I want everyone to read more horror, if that‘s what happens to you I would stay away. Because there are definitely some visuals in here that would haunt you. And there were some parts in here that jump scared me. I‘m glad you saw the face. Lol 2y
vivastory I just watched Sick on peacock. Have you seen it? 2y
Reggie @vivastory I have not. Is it good? 2y
vivastory I liked it. I can see it being a bit controversial. I recommend going in blind. Kevin Williamson is one of the screenwriters. 2y

A horror novella where everything that could go wrong does go wrong. Abby is on a road trip to meet some friends. Unfortunately, a huge blizzard comes up and makes the drive treacherous. Add to that she witnesses a truck accident and decides to help out the driver. This turns into a terrible adventure involving cryptids and the strange cargo in the truck. The story was very interesting and a fast read. I really enjoyed the book.

psalva I‘m glad to be reminded of this book. I heard about it on the Books in the Freezer podcast, which covers horror books, and I meant to to add it to my stack then. I‘m glad to hear it‘s worth a read. 2y
ReadingOver50 @psalva I listen to that podcast too 😄 2y

(Day 2 - #RumorHasIt)

For some reason, this made me think of some of the most outrageous authorial hoaxes ever perpetrated on the reading public. Finally, after considering several (The Hitler Diaries, anyone?), I landed on the weird, winding tale of J. T. (for Terminator) Leroy, aka Laura Albert. Humph. Whatever, for what it‘s worth.... (shrugs shoulders).

Cinfhen I never knew that!!! #LiveAndLearn 6y
Mdargusch Interesting! 🤔 6y
emilyhaldi I need to spend some time googling this situation! 6y
Reviewsbylola Wow, this is fascinating. 6y
gradcat @Cinfhen @Mdargusch @emilyhaldi @Reviewsbylola It is a very interesting story...you guys should check it out. Plus, there are a couple (maybe more?) documentaries out there that cover this subject. It‘s such a strange story, too! 6y

If I could string together all the lines of text I‘ve read aloud on the road, I‘d be able to tie a bow of words around the world.

Moray_Reads I hadn't read this before. It was fun, with the trademark Pratchett humour. The "steering committee" had me laughing out loud 6y
julesG This book wasn't my cup of tea. It has the Pratchett humour, but I was longing for the Discworld. 6y
gossamerchild I cannot believe I haven't finished this yet! So far it's hilarious- I LOVE the old woman nome. Reminds me STRONGLY of The Carpet People. Still, not the Discworld 😂😂 6y
julesG @gossamerchild Yes, it reminded me a lot of Carpet People. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @julesG Yes it reminded me of The Carpet People too, it‘s interesting to see how his idea and writing evolved from there. And no, it‘s not Discworld, but after a heavy month of news and reading some more serious non-fiction, I enjoyed this light fun story. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Moray_Reads Yes, I enjoyed some of the play on words, that was a great line! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @gossamerchild Yes, the female nomes are feisty, I like it 😂 6y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @julesG @gossamerchild It reminded me of The Carpet People, too! I enjoyed it, but I agree, it is no Discworld. On the other hand, I have learned it is based on The Borrowers, which I have not heard of before, but I will have to check out. And while it us no Discworld, I enjoy these forays into kid‘s Pratchett. 6y
gossamerchild @Gezemice The Borrowers is a great series! I can't believe I didn't catch that. Thanks for that info 😁😁 6y
julesG @Gezemice Oh, I didn't know that! 6y
Iblu Finally catching up!!! The audiobooks def help in speeding up proceedings and I can safely listen to it with my bookish 8 yrs old currently exploring super classics like Around the world in 80 days 6y
julesG @Iblu Good to hear it! I like the audiobooks. The Discworld ones are also good. 6y
