I really do love Emily Dickinson‘s Hope is the thing with feathers, but I wanted to share this poem written in response. I‘ve been thinking about it a lot for the past few weeks.

I love Dickinson‘s poetry. Thoughtful and contemplative, I often found myself comparing her to Mary Oliver, the intertwining of the natural and the divine felt similar between the two. A classic, to be sure.
A super fun cookbook based on a super fun TikTok channel! Some of these recipes aren‘t for the faint of heart though! 😂

pickWilmur & Viola‘s boring life gets interrupted when a mysterious person crashes through their front door. Everything about her screams danger, but the 2 children are willing to trade anything to try & get away from the island. & so they meet pirates, royalty, & secrets.
Loved it! Characters were all engaging, pacing was great, world building was wild. My only complaint is that the end is less cliffhanger & more cut off in the middle.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Not too many books finished this week! Things have been a little chaotic this past week, but hopefully next week is calmer!
This was the first book I ever bought with my own money. Shout out to the Scholastic Book Fair! ❤️ I saved up so much babysitting money, and I devoured this whole series.
The small, overlooked, seemingly meek creatures actually being courageous warriors capable of saving their communities? Yeah, I really needed that as a kid. ❤️

pickMorgan wants to discover the source of the cataclysm that temporarily killed the aether magic through the universe. While she does her research, she also has to keep the secret of her family‘s history from a government that would see her killed.
Fantastic follow up! I love the weaving together of sci fi/fantasy, I adored the new character of Morgan, & her quest. The pacing got a little off near the end, but I‘d happily read another!🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
so-soDeina, indentured to the House of Hades, is just trying to earn her freedom by shepherding souls to the Underworld. When King Orpheus calls for a team to rescue his wife‘s soul & bring her back, this may be Deina‘s only chance.
I‘m feeling torn on this. An absolutely fascinating, unique twist on Orpheus/Eurydice, intriguing magic, cruel gods, mortals just trying to live. But also a romance that I had a hard time getting invested in.🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
I knew my good numbers last week wasn‘t going to last! 😂

Honestly, I‘ve been thinking about this book and Very Secret Society constantly lately, so here. I don‘t even need to have magic here, but I‘d love to live in the cozy, found family, magical world built in these two books.

panThings become complicated for Jazzi when her friend & bookstore co-owner Dawn discovers a violently murdered body after a cooking competition. It‘ll be up to Jazzi to investigate when Dawn‘s mental health nose dives.
This was disappointing. The bookstore didn‘t make nearly as much of an appearance as I wanted, the prose was repetitive & ridiculously over detailed. The solve didn‘t feel well set up. The narrator did a good job though.🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑
I think this may be the best I‘ve ever done on a #TLT list! 😂
Faves include Dracula (obviously), Frankenstein, and The Hound of the Baskervilles!

pickA collection of poetry, prose, and essays from the amazing nature writer Mary Oliver.
More than anything else, Oliver‘s writing has this ability to make me stop and just breathe. The consideration and care she gives to even the tiniest of moments, the fluttering of a bird‘s wings, rustling of leaves in the wind, is phenomenal. I just want to sink into her poems. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗
pickWhen a piece of local marshland starts getting developed, a long lost cousin of Jim‘s come out of the woodwork to claim the land. But she‘s not all she seems to be.
This one‘s fascinating! A lot of the book is everyone talking about trusting Trixie‘s instincts, but Trixie keeps doubting herself. I loved the kindness the group show here, lots of Dan, although Diana seems to have been left behind this time. & the ending was so satisfying!🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
Dentist appointment today! Even more important now as my state has decided to ban fluoride in public drinking water. 🙃

This feels ludicrously timely. Vimes‘s whole speech about Us Vs Them, the anti-immigration rhetoric in Ankh-Mor Pork, the leaders in charge not truly understanding the costs of war as they throw the young men of the country into battle for pride/land/glory. Phew. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

Don‘t get me wrong, I really loved A Witch‘s Guide to Magical Innkeeping!
But I had really hoped for a direct continuation of Mika‘s story. I wanted to see her new students, the struggles she‘d face in her situation. I wanted to see more of the developing romance with Jamie.
Hopefully we‘ll get that someday. 💙

This was a fun, quick read! A modern Scooby Doo gang gets dropped into a Scream movie. Characters a little flat, & mystery a bit predictable, but overall fun. & made me curious enough for any sequel.🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

A fascinating book of a woman I had never heard about. The tension in her story as she hides her background, the love she has for the rare books she collects was fantastic. But the last 1/2 spent way too much time on her love life, I wanted more of her work.🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
pickPrincess Ozma has been kidnapped, & all the magical artifacts of Oz have vanished. Dorothy puts together a team to rescue the lost princess.
I remember loving this one as a kid, because it‘s a dramatic search & rescue, all the girls are together, & my favorite animals. And I adored the bears. I also appreciated the resolution with Ugu. But I hadn‘t remembered the Lion or Scraps being quite so condescending to every one around them. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
We have had more rain in the last few days than I got in my two weeks in England. I‘m a little miffed. 😂

Loved this! Returning characters, lovely cozy setting. And while I did predict the culprit, I felt like it was set up well, & I had half convinced myself I was wrong w/ every red herring.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

13 beautiful, lyrical, and dark retellings of 13 different fairy tales. I desperately need to listen to these on audio during a dark autumn evening. All about the patriarchy‘s control of our bodies and voices, and the feminine rage unleashed to control our stories. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗
pickJules, Carlos, & Andy are off on an adventure visiting a coffee bean farm in Costa Rica. The timing couldn‘t be worse as they arrive in the middle of family drama selling the farm, a possible corporate buyout, and murder.
My favorite so far! New location, new characters, but also continuing Jules‘s relationships back home, a twisty mystery w/ a thoroughly satisfying solve, & all the delicious food descriptions you could ask for.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
The 2020 paperback editions of six of the Dune books. I‘d buy prints of these and put them on my wall.
And it makes me so mad because I really, really don‘t like Dune. But they‘re so pretty! 😫

pickIn 2024, Tildy discovers a secret room in the library she works at containing 2 elaborate, mysterious doll houses. In 1914, a young woman named Cora arrives in Paris intent on forging a new life.
What fun! I loved the characters, especially Cora, & the mystery of the doll houses was fascinating. Cora‘s story got a little Forrest Gump through history, but I really loved it, a tale of the importance of highlighting women‘s stories. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
pickA fascinating collection of myths and legends spanning centuries and countries. From the classic Greek myths through King Arthur, Norse myths, and legends of Charlemagne, this would be a great starting point for anyone wanting to get into mythologies of Europe.
I considered myself well studied in Greek myths and Arthurian legends, but this collection had several I had never seen before! Also enjoyed the occasional insert of other texts.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

so-soThe fight to destroy the demonic infestation becomes even more fraught as Yuli must balance her powers as the Guardian of Wind w/ trying to take the mantle of the leader of her people.
I liked this 1 better than the first 2. The fairy tale influence actually subverted my expectations, & I really enjoyed the subplot of Yuli‘s trials. But this is starting to get a little bogged down w/ so many POVs. I will say I‘m very excited for book 4.🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
