Gahh, I don't know how to rate this one. It's a direct 3.5/5 and I usually like to round up or down.

Sprawling, sci fi Victoriana adventure novel. All the ingredients that are right up my street, but something was missing.

The structure is a complete shambles which knocks the pacing off kilter. And yet, I cared and am annoyed I have to wait for the sequel.

I'd probably have enjoyed it more on Kindle or in paperback because OW MY WRISTS.

quote
RaeLovesToRead

"Still, as much as I take seriously the cooking of meals just for myself or to eat with others, every so often I think of peaceful meals between two people who are in love with an ache that seems perilously close to my skin..

I love to live alone, but I long to know I'm real beyond my own comprehension."

This book is full of a familiar longing for which I'm yet to find a sufficient balm. Still, it's probably not all it's cracked up to be, right?

slategreyskies Wow, this book sounds really good. I‘m going to try to find a copy. Hugs to you! 🫂 🩵 5d
RaeLovesToRead @slategreyskies It's an odd one because the quotes on the back made it sound like a love song to the single life, but mostly it's about how the world is not built for singletons. It's not perfect, but some of it hits directly like an arrow straight to the heart! 5d

This was an amusing but contrived cosy.

Maybe its cast of eccentric coastal characters would have won my heart if Astrid hadn't enacted toothbrush-revenge early on (a personal bugbear of mine. NOT COOL, ASTRID.)

Regardless, this was good fun. I sniggered many times. The mystery was secondary and didn't draw me in as much as Astrid's own story.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ for enjoyment, but I've read more proficient cosies.

Pickpick

I really liked how much Lady Audley's Secret read like a detective novel (despite pre-dating the detective novel by a good few years).

It's the story of a mystery and a scandal, unfolding through the investigative eyes of the usually bone idle Robert Audley.

It's very Victorian, and you'll either love or hate the flowery language.

Plot twists, melodrama, much better serialised than Dickens! Dragged a bit at times, but still entertaining.

I found Deborah James' book extremely inspiring.

If there is one message I will take away from reading it, it is to have rebellious hope.

What an amazing person. I only wish she could've had many more years of fulfilling and happy life.

Readable as heck. Probably full of plot holes I don't give a damn about. Twisty, turny, ambitious, and totally bananas.

Started this book on my lunch break.

Anyone who has tried and failed to improve their mental outlook over a period of many years will know how victim-blamey being told to think positive is, but Deborah James focuses on HOPE 💙☀️

I might try cultivating hope because unlike general positivity it focuses on the unknowns of the future. It's easier to hope for the future than to alter thinking on the past and present.

What do I dare to hope for?

NatalieR I agree. Being hopeful is much more helpful for me than “being positive.” I have found gratitude extremely helpful in moments of distress or suffering. ☮️ 1mo
TheBookHippie I agree 💯. The be thankful be grateful thing grates on me. Hope is better. 1mo
RaeLovesToRead @NatalieR Gratitude can be powerful, but I struggle to summon a feeling of gratitude... instead of writing down things I'm grateful for, I write down things that made me laugh, so when I look back it makes me lol 😁💕 1mo

The Story of Art | E. H. Gombrich
post image
Pickpick

This was an incredible book, but a total sausage fest.

It gets ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for being an inspiring, colourful, accessible, engaging volume, and for giving me a grounding in art knowledge that I didn't think possible from one book.

Art is discussed from a Eurocentric position, only ONE female artist is featured and some of the language is culturally insensitive to the modern ear, but this remains an outstanding work.

Thirsty for more now!

Suet624 Glad you got so much out of this! 1mo

They have told me this before. Most of it anyway.

This may be the basics, but it's also the FUNDAMENTALS.

This is a really good summary of self care and simple therapeutic tools to manage symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress, grief, & emotional turbulence.

Later chapters on attachment and living within ones own values also provide invaluable information.

It won't cure your problems, but I would endorse this book as a good place to start.

This was a good short story / novella, but possibly suffers from being overhyped.

Claire Keegan creates an emotional impression with her writing, but sometimes there's a thin line between life affirming and clichéd, between heartwarming and twee. I think she mostly succeeds.

This is a quiet and moving tale about life, morals, charity, luck, priorities and responsibilities. Time will tell whether it leaves a lasting impression on me.

This is something that can be difficult to understand for people who are naturally cheerful, because what can be the harm in positivity, right?

Sadly, it can feel very lonely and alienating if it jars with your inner experience.

It's OK to stop trying to gaslight yourself.

I recommend cat pictures, self-deprecating humour, distraction, music, videogames, tea, ranting & light exercise instead.

Whatever gets you through!

RaeLovesToRead @Bookwomble @ImperfectCJ Shout out to my fellow grumps! 😁💕 Don't get me wrong, there are many positive nuggets that I've drunk in and found comfort from over the years. It's nice not to have to put on a front all the time though. I find a sense of humour is the biggest blessing. 2mo
RaeLovesToRead @Bookwomble @ImperfectCJ Someone posted this one the other day too and it made me giggle... 2mo
kassandrik Toxic positivity is just the worst! All emotions matter if they are not leading to aggression and harm. Also, speaking out loud own worries sometimes works better if we want to reduce power of anxiety. 2mo
Cuilin @Bookwomble So toxic! I think it‘s a way of communicating “Please don‘t tell me how you really feel.” As a neurodivergent I hate it!! 2mo
RaeLovesToRead @kassandrik @Cuilin The absolute WORST affirmation is "happiness is a choice" ???? 2mo
kassandrik “Just think positively. You choose the way you think. Negativity is in your head“ That's what I dislike to hear :(
Usually, when I hear these statements, I just want to remind people about the power of emotional validation. If someone is sad or unhappy, just be there and listen. It is much more empowering than “Be happy!“ attitude

RaeLovesToRead @kassandrik Yes. And no two brains are alike. We're all sitting in very different emotional and cognitive environments to start off with. What works for one may not work for another 💙 2mo
The_Penniless_Author 💯 We've discussed this topic before, so you know I'm in total agreement. Shout out to my favorite anti-faux-positivity book 2mo
RaeLovesToRead @The_Penniless_Author Yup, although you are the cheery recipient of maaaaany miserable, ranty emails from Yours Truly so be careful what you wish for 😉😇 2mo
Bookwomble @Cuilin Sad is a valid emotion that we ignore at our peril. As a fellow neurodivergent, I'm trying not to mask so much & to accept & learn from what my emotions are communicating. Feeling the loss of a public figure last week, I consoled myself by reading aloud, in my best theatrical voice, the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, a poem about the fleetingness of life, the inevitability of death, the likelihood of oblivion, & felt much better for it! 1mo
Cuilin @Bookwomble I‘ve been married for 26 years and I‘m just beginning to unmask around my in-laws. 😮‍💨 I‘m definitely checking out that poem. May I ask what public figure? And I‘m sorry for your sadness. 🥰 1mo
Bookwomble @Cuilin I've only "come out" to a few people. Those who know me best said, "No shit, Sherlock!", so I've felt supported and accepted. I hope your in-laws are understanding ? It was a singer I like, Steve Harley. I posted about him at this tag #TuesdayTunes It activated some of my personal loss, too, but I think being connected with that is beneficial in processing it. I hope you like the Rubáiyát; it's one of my favourites, especially the 1st ed. 1mo

This #blameitonLitsy purchase is turning out to be rather delicious!

It's like a skankier Jane Austen 🤣

batsy The drama! Such a juicy read 😆 2mo
RaeLovesToRead @batsy This is how you serialise, Dickens! 2mo
LeeRHarry A skankier Jane Austen you say? Now I‘m definitely intrigued! 😆 2mo
Cuilin I loved that book. It‘s also one of my daughter‘s favorites. 2mo
RaeLovesToRead @LeeRHarry @Cuilin Yes! It came to my attention on Litsy and it's so good so far! 😁 2mo

Thanks for the tag @The_Penniless_Author 😁
#two4tuesday @TheSpineView 😊

1) I always end up playing the Two-Handed weapon wielding Orc-type character whenever I play D&D or Skyrim...

If Pokemon count, I'd be a Snorlax.

2) Harry Potter. That may be an obvious choice, but I'm sleepy 😄⚡️

TheSpineView Thanks for playing! ❤️📖📚 2mo

Pickpick

This was incredible. I was thoroughly absorbed from start to finish.

A dark exploration of what it might be like to be brought back to life as a clone, with added twists and turns. This is not really a murder mystery, nor pure sci fi, nor lit fic, but incorporates elements from each genre to create a stunning whole.

I couldn't put it down.

Which cover do you like best? US on left, UK on right.

Amiable I think the one on the left? 2mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird I love the US cover! 2mo
Yuki_Onna I'm in favour of the UK one! 2mo

LiteraryinLawrence US cover for sure! 2mo
RaeLovesToRead @Amiable @TheIntrovertedDodoBird @Yuki_Onna @LiteraryinLawrence So I LOVE the US cover and dislike the UK one in terms of aesthetic, but the UK one reflects the tone of the book MUCH better! 2mo
Branwen I am SO jealous of how cool the UK cover is! 😱 2mo
