4⭐ Growing up is hard. As girls age, they find different likes, and can start to stray from long held friendships. In Roller Girl, Astrid falls in love with Roller Derby. It is so geeky, but edgy at the same time. Her friend, however, is more into dance. Their friendship starts to splinter as Astrid pulls more to Roller Derby. She is not very good and does a lot of falling but she is learning to get up on her own feet and to find the courage
I could keep running from my battles and live in fear or I could embrace the fear.
I enjoyed when Astrid goes to apologize to Zoey and helps her calm down before the match.
Roller girl is an excellent story about a girl named Astrid who falls in love with roller skating and the roller derby to be more specific. Astrid goes through many trials throughout the book specifically with her friend Nicole. The two used to do everything together but as their interests differ they begin to drift apart.

All around good reading week despite the disaster of leaving my current reads in someone else's car for 48 hours. Went a little off forecast but still managed to finish one of my goals.
#WeeklyForecast
Goal this week is to finish through part 2 in OaFK. Then get a little bit into Dark Run as it's a library book.
This was a cute story about growing out of friendship and learning to widen your social circles. It also has a nice intro to derby and its culture. Astrid had some understandable flaws but I feel like she also had some growth during the story as well.
I found this while pulling holds today so I‘m taking it home with me. I just joined a recreational roller derby league so I‘m kinda hyped about derby right now.
In honor of my league starting up practices again. It‘s been almost two whole years.
#12booksof2020- I read this one with my daughter and we both loved it. So many good messages in this book- hard work, dedication, friendship, independence, being truthful - although meant for young children, this book has stuck with me - I was really impressed.
This is a book about determination and developing new friendships and overcoming obstacles. Plus, who wouldn‘t like to read a book about Roller Derby? This is a perfect book for those who are struggling with middle school adjustments and just growing up in general. And, in the graphic novel form, perfect for reluctant readers.
It's like it was made just for me! Roller Derby, funky hair dye colors, Portland, The Rose City Rollers, friendship troubles... I loved every second of it.
What an awesome book! I loved this story about finding oneself and working hard. Astrid learns a lot about being a friend over the summer before junior high. I need my own copy of this one to file with Shannon Hale‘s Real Friends.
Official Wrap-up for the #MiddleGradeMadeEasy portion of #BBRC! These were all solid picks that I really enjoyed, with the exception of Heidi. I'm hoping to read the rest of the Percy Jackson series over winter break.
On to #TeenAngst...highly appropriate as we have our fair share of early teen angst in my home these days! 😂

“Actually my best friend ditched me for a rat-faced jerk, and now I‘m heading into this, the scariest day of my life all alone” this is a quote that basically explains how every child feels when their best friend makes another friend!
I would love to have this book in a 3-5 grade classroom! It is a great tool for children to have while they are navigating their 9-14 years! They will be able to relate to it, and also enjoy the pictures and story line as well! Easy read for them because it is comic style!
Roller Girl- Published in 2015 is a NewBery Honor book about a girl who falls in love with Roller Derby. She is going into her teenage years and she realizes that her friends may not all be into the same things as her. She‘s finding herself while trying to accept that people are not always going to stay the same forever. It is a perfect description of what it is like to grow up in today‘s society, and a great example of how to handle change!
Which way to read? I put a hold in them both from the library and I would read which everyone came in first. Well I have both now.
This was my daughter‘s favorite book in 3rd grade, although as a 6th grader, I think she relates better now to the changing friendships and finding your identity themes in this excellent story. I really loved this, and would love to see a sequel!

Having a quick cup of tea before heading to the Charlotte climate strike today! Protest appropriate mug of choice this morning. 😃 ☕️
Anyone else participating in the Climate Strike today? 🌎
I loved this! This was recommended to me by my friend‘s daughter and I must say she has great taste. A coming of age story about friendships and not giving up on your dreams, any kid (or adult) could relate to what Astrid is going through. The plot was easy to follow, the illustrations were fun and a great introduction to roller derby. Highly recommend!

A super fun story about finding new friends, a new focus and courage you didn't know you had! I grew up in the days when derby was televised and had a friend who was a jeerleader for a team in Brooklyn so the culture is familiar to me. These chicks are badass and wonderful role models for anyone!!

If a picture ever held a thousand words, this is the one!!!! Astrid, this is still me at 40!!! 😂😂😂😂
Loving this MG graphic novel and I need to remember to start recording for #BBRC!!! Lol @LibrarianRyan
SO adorable! Love stories about kids reflecting on how they weren‘t their best self, then making things right. I enjoyed learning all about roller derby: it‘s so badass!
The part where Zoe dyes Astrid‘s hair kills me because that was my life as a teen omg. Also a huge fan of the Hugh Jackman tributes 😭😍 full review on Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2888735791
#30junebooks - day 23. For today‘s prompt of “N”, I asked my nine year old to choose nine of her favorite books off her shelf. She came up with 2 graphic novels, 2 Harry Potter-ish books, a Dork Diaries, an Ever After High, a Percy Jackson, a science book, and a Bible. She‘s eclectic... or well-rounded, depending on how you look at it. 🙂 #raisingreaders
My eldest turned 9 today! She got 9 books in honor of this momentous occasion, and being her booknerdy self, literally squealed with joy as she opened them. 😍 #raisingreaders
What a fun story about friendships and how they can change. The author is a Rose City Roller, too.
This was an excellent middle grade graphic novel about a girl named Astrid and the summer before middle school. She and her best friend are growing apart and she's trying to figure out who she is as everything changes. She spends the summer in roller derby camp and it helps her find confidence and friendship. A great message about being yourself, following your passion, and taking risks. A great read for all ages!
4 stars. There was a little bit of weird girls-hating-girls-for-being-girly drama, but that was mostly addressed and otherwise it was a super fun and colorful read!
This book..... is amazing!!! Between the roller derby and the real world lessons about friendship and teamwork and the wonderful mother/daughter relationship..... I love this book. So, so freaking much. I laughed and cried.
I absolutely loved Roller Girl. Such a great example of showing young women as strong, tough and determined and focused on things other than boys.

Roller Girl is a fabulous, tough, empathetic, middle-grade, graphic novel—I eagerly passed it on to my 11-year-old niece (but only after my 11-year-old son devoured it twice and I had my turn!).
Such a cute book! A graphic novel dealing with evolving friendships, growing up, finding your passion, overcoming obstacles, and (of course) roller derby!
It is my niece‘s 12th birthday today! She is my brother‘s step daughter, and when I first met her 3 or 4 years ago she hated to read. They live several states away, so I don‘t see her as often as I would like, but she loves the Lumberjanes comics and other graphic novels I send her. She also loves Monster High. A book seller recommended the tagged book for her.
Any recommendations for a middle grade series similar in vibe to Lumberjanes?
I loved this middle grade graphic novel about a young girl trying to figure out who she is and the nature of “best friends” while discovering a love for roller derby. Charming and thoughtful.
I picked this up for me at the library and my 7-Year-old immediately stole it from me. We ended up reading it together and loving it.
This inspiring graphic novel really shows what it‘s like to be a middle schooler. Friendships change and Astrid just wants to find where she fits in. Great easy read!
This book was such a delight! Middle grade/younger YA about a 12-year-old wanting to learn roller derby while also dealing with the pains and anxieties of growing up. I loved Astrid and found her very relatable; she is definitely a real kid with complex emotions. All the roller derby stuff is so fun, but the book also explores deeper issues without being preachy. The storyline of drifting friends and making news ones is done particularly well. ⬇️
