God Bless You, Mr Rosewater | 
so-soVonnegut has a distinct style & it‘s not for everyone. He can be incredibly crass, but then he writes a line that just cuts to the quick. This book delves into some of the PTSD & mental illness that he struggled with. As a Hoosier, I loved all the references to Indiana locations. Not my favorite Vonnegut, but certainly not my last. “Nobody can work with the poor and not fall over Karl Marx from time to time—or just fall over the Bible.”
A very rare month for me, to finish both Spin books: yay! Another great book by one of my favorite authors, my #DoubleSpin: a pick!
It didn't help me advance in the #PromptMaze Q3 (I am stuck for weeks now in a cell that wants a book Published in the 1980s, 1990s or between 2000-2010, all my recent reads were older or newer than that 😁) but it helped me in the Q4 maze.

pickI finished my first Vonnegut! I love good satire, and this did not disappoint. I absolutely love the way he writes. Now I can't wait to read Breakfast of Champions.
pickA refreshingly low-concept story that ends a bit more softly than I'd hoped, but features some truly beautiful passages. It's greatest strength is it's ability to guide the reader's attention, never once letting your engagement slip.
The cashier who sold me my book, who recognized me from high school, asked me if Vonnegut was any good. I told them that I'd enjoyed what of him I'd read, and that remains true.
There are some mornings where you need a cup of coffee, a good book, and a donut the size of your face. This is one of those mornings.

I had a fantastic weekend in Nashville with @cobwebmoth . Centennial Park was such a great place to walk and explore! The Parthenon is awesome! The statue of Athena is quite impressive. We found Cerberus there as well. I finally bought my first Vonnegut across the street from there.

I have owned this for such a long time. I think I bought it in high school. I really wanted to start 2019 reading something by a woman but since I‘ve owned this for so long, I think it‘s a great way to start reading what I own. Also it‘s really funny. I haven‘t read Vonnegut in a long time. I missed him.

Last night I saw a musical version of God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater. “There's only one rule that I know of, babies-God damn it, you've got to be kind.” Those words, truer now than ever before.

pickOne of the funniest books I've read in a while, God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater or Pearls Before Swine is the story of a Rockefeller type heir who leaves New York City, moves to Rosewater, Indiana, gives away his fortune to anybody who asks and loses his mind in the process. pickFull of black humor, this is Vonnegut at his best. Eliot Rosewater, heir of an immense amount of money, is considered to be insane because he doesn't care for it. Because he wants to share it with the poor and irrelevant people. He must be insane, for sure?! The irony is great, I had to laugh a lot reading this cynical portrait of modern America. #1001books
so-so4/5, in that this was an average Vonnegut, but ultimately is still KVJ. One of his more complicated and intertextual novels, I felt distracted by references and inside jokes. However, the message rang true in our Post-Truth Plutocracy, where money is king, and being poor is an atrocity to America. The 1965 NYT Review (http://www.nytimes.com/1965/04/25/books/vonnegut-rosewater.html?_r=0) was interesting to compare the books legacy, 52 years on.

I have to confess, I'm going to have to read this one as well. Yesterday when I started the audio I was riding in the backseat of my parent's car and when not driving or in the front I tend to get a little motion sickness so I close my eyes on longer trips. The narrator of this audio was a bit monotone. Yup, I did. So I missed some.

For #publishedinthe1960s, I have several, but thought I'd share where I started with my #birthdaychallenge reading. I'm on 1976 now, BTW. Pictured in chronological order. The tagged book is what got me wanting to read more by Vonnegut!
Vonnegut takes a jab at both capitalism and socialism and everything in between. Ultimately it's human nature that he satirizes, the importance of wealth, and the empty definitions of sanity vs insanity.
Witty but at times lacks cohesion due to the introduction of too many peripheral characters.

pickFinished 1st book of my #birthdaychallenge (idea credit: @TheNextBook ). I'm relatively new to Vonnegut; this book certainly shows the satire/dark humor he was famous for. Eliot Rosewater is a rich drunk who heads a foundation where all he does is hand out money to anyone who asks for it. He's a fan of the sci-fi writer Kilgore Trout. As I understand, Trout shows up often in other Vonneguts. The summaries of sci-stories penned by Trout are 🙌.

Be kind. Really enjoying this 1965 Vonnegut for my first #birthdaychallenge reading. I've only read one other of his, Cat's Cradle. Looked for more at the used bookstore (which relies on donated books) but she said the Vonneguts are really popular-- they fly out of the door almost as soon as they come in. I can kind of see why.
