I enjoyed this more than I‘d thought I would (with low expectations) - there‘s great humour, wonderful observations by Ariadne Oliver about being an author & the joy of her and Poirot‘s company. The mystery is elusive & dissatisfying in that it stays so nebulous & hard to grasp throughout. This could be deliberate as memory (a theme) can be slippery too, but it feels vague. Elephants are mentioned far too often (especially for Poirot!).

kspenmoll That cover! Scary! 4mo

4✨ Another Poirot book that is really fun to read. We have a question posed to Ms. Oliver on an event was there is a double murder/suicide. Did the husband kill the wife and then commit suicide, the other way around, or did they both commit suicide at the same time. Certainly someone will remember something so they can crack the mystery. The story flows well, and I was finally able to solve one! I enjoy Poirot as a master of deduction always.

This was another entertaining Poirot/Ariadne Oliver pairing. They are trying to figure out the reasoning behind a very old double suicide and must track down people who might remember details about the couple. All the talk and confusion about elephants was very amusing. I love Mrs. Oliver

Ruthiella I love Mrs Oliver too and her eternal frustration with her fictional Finnish detective. 😆 7mo

This was actually the first Agatha Christie I saw the plot twist coming. But it was very exciting anyway. The only thing going on my nerves were the words „Elephants can remember“ but the main characters felt so too. 😊

I‘m almost done with the Poirot series, 1 more to go. Ariadne Oliver is in this one a lot, which makes it more entertaining. Otherwise, the story is good with a predictable ending.

Even though I've seen dozens of movies and TV shows with her characters, I've never read an Agatha Christie novel. I don't think this was the one to start with, I found it boring and tedious, with a very obvious conclusion. Maybe I should have started with a better known classic like Murder on the Orient Express. 2 ⭐⭐
3rd and final book for #20in4 readathon @Andrew65

Ruthiella Yeah, this is late Christie. I recommend The ABC Murders as a good starting point for Poirot. Or begin at the beginning with The Mysterious Affair at Styles. 3y
RamsFan1963 @Ruthiella Thanks for the suggestions. I have The A.B.C Murders on my TBR shelves 3y
AlaMich This one is a good one as well. 3y

Laughterhp I‘d also recommend trying And Then There Were None. It‘s a stand-alone with no Poirot or Marple. 3y
rretzler Ditto The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, And Then There Were None and Murder on the Orient Express. I‘ve also been partial to Murder at the Vicarage. Also good IMO are Crooked House, Endless Night, Peril at End House, and Five Little Pigs. Hope you have a better experience next time. 3y
Andrew65 Brilliant time, well done 👏👏👏🙌🥳🥳🍾🥂😍👍😊 Shame about the book. 3y

Finished this last night. I like how elephants are used in the book. The climax could be guessed a little beforehand but still this was a good read.

Continuing on with my journey on trying to read every Agatha Christie book. I enjoyed this one, but not as much as others. This was the first time I was able to guess what happened before the end... Maybe I'm just getting better at it? #doubtit #mystery 🤓🕵️

BookishMe Yes, the clues were easy to spot early on. I find that predicting the end doesn't make her books any less enjoyable for me ;D 5y

Agatha always makes for a fun, easy, yet brain-exercising read. This is not one of her bests - she wrote it in 1972, when she was 82. While I enjoyed the mystery, and figured it out too, I felt that the romantic tragedy, the motivations, governesses, well-to-do people with estates, belonged to a different era, and found it overly melodramatic. I did enjoy that she write herself into the book as Mrs. Oliver, though. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

MommyWantsToReadHerBook Yeah I remember really not liking this one and never reading it ever again 😊 6y
Gezemice @MommyWantsToReadHerBook I can‘t re-read her, once I know the solution... Luckily I have only read about 8 so I have a long way to go :) 6y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook @Gezemice maybe I just have a terrible memory 😂 but over the last 20+ years I've been able to reread quite a lot of her books without remembering who did it 😂 6y
See All 8 Comments
Gezemice @MommyWantsToReadHerBook Lol! Unfortunately I usually recall the solution even if I don‘t recall anything else. I read “The Mirror Cracked From Side to Side” and did not remember a thing, except that I have seen it in a movie a long time ago and I knew what happened... it was still enjoyable but figuring it out is half the fun. 6y
rabbitprincess I love the cover art on this one! 6y
MichelleScott_author I remember when this book came out. I was right in the middle of an Agatha Christie binge read, so it was perfect timing. 6y
Gezemice @Coffeeshopreviews Awesome! I like to read her occasionally. Great break between more difficult books. 6y
Gezemice @rabbitprincess The library often has old editions with original covers. This is a first edition from 1972. Seventies covers are often the whackiest! 6y

Well written and plotted with much twist that made the book engaging. It was predictable towards the end but intriguing nevertheless! I felt that this was much better than Murder on the Orient Express

This was a unique read. It was a little confusing in the middle, but the further along I got into the story the more thought-provoking it became. And at the end was the traditional Agatha Christie twist ending. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #ElephantsCanRemember #AgathaChristie #HerculePoirot #HerculePoirotSeries #book #books #bookzesty #bookzilla #bookzine #bookzone #bookxcess #bookcollection #bookcollector #bookcase #bookcases #bookcover #bookcovers #bookclub 💞💞💞

Only ⭐️⭐️⭐️ , which is disappointing for an Agatha book. It was a solid read until near the end, and then it seemed rushed, as if she‘d had a deadline with her publisher.

And the cover makes no sense. There is nothing in the text about bloody keys.

Nothing.

Another great mystery by Agatha Christie. She never disappoints. I am truly addicted to her books. In this particular story, Poirot investigates what is believed to be a double suicide. He must go back in time to unravel what happened. 👍
