Godfather
Godfather | Mario Puzo
When Mario Puzo's blockbuster saga, The Godfather, was first published in 1969, critics hailed it as one of the greatest novels of our time, and "big, turbulent, highly entertaining." Since then, The Godfather has gone on to become a part of America's national culture, as well as a trilogy of landmark motion pictures. Now, in this newly-repackaged 30th Anniversary Edition, readers old and new can experience this timeless tale of crime for themselves. From the lavish opening scene where Don Corleone entertains guests and conducts business at his daughter's wedding...to his son, Michael, who takes his father's place to fight for his family...to the bloody climax where all family business is finished, The Godfather is an epic story of family, loyalty, and how "men of honor" live in their own world, and die by their own laws.

In his introduction F. F. Coppola says he had expected The Godfather to be more classy, i.e. literary. He got something more akin to a dime store novel.

Like Coppola, I too expected something classy, so at first I was a bit disappointed; Puzo is not a great writer. He repeats himself often, uses dialogue for info dumps, etc. But if you keep in mind the pulp fiction aesthetic and let the story take center stage, it eventually earns its stripes.

Coppola‘s films adhered very closely to this novel, but fortunately they left out a few of the more cringeworthy chapters Such as the whole after story of Lucy Mancini. So as a huge fan of the films, I really enjoyed the book despite such episodes.
Puzo‘s world seems very real and his characters are brutal but also mostly sympathetic.
Looking forward to a rewatch.

This book incredible, and the audio narration is perfect. It‘s an amazing mix of family, community, betrayal, and violence. I especially appreciated all of the backstory and interconnections. I enjoyed it so much more than I expected and will have to make time for the movie now as well.

I‘ve never seen the movie, but I‘ve really only heard good things of both the movie and book, so I added this to my Audible collection. The story is sometimes violent, but it‘s also much more engaging than I expected. The flashbacks and history of the various characters make me more invested in their stories. I‘m intrigued to continue. Additionally, the narration is fantastic.

5️⃣🌟Im not sure I can say whether I liked the book or movie better, they give such strong reasons to love both in different ways. The movie has the incredible actors, directing, and cinematography. The book gives more detail and background info of the lives of each character- Flashbacks that help to understand the relationships and gives them more of a personality rather then being just a mobster. The narrator lets us into their thoughts.🌹

Although this book was very good and the movie followed it closely, I think this is one of the rare cases where the movie is actually better than the book. The book spends a fair bit of time on side characters and plots outside of the Corleone family that are just not as interesting. There was something about the writing style that made it very easy to read, I can see why it was on the bestseller lists for 70 weeks when it came out.

KathyWheeler I agree. Although the book was good, the movie really eclipsed it. It just got rid of everything that was unnecessary and brought the story together in a tight narrative arc. 2y

Yay! Finished my first book of 2023! My husband and I listened to this book together during our road trip. Surprisingly, I enjoyed this book (the movie never caught my attention before). I liked how in depth Puzo described his characters and I loved that "family" was important even though the Corleones were killers. It was graphic at times but not enough to deter me.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! This is one of those classics that I can never decide whether or not I should read. I've never been one for violent movies; I had to watch this in-class when I was in college and it was a bit scarring 😂 Luckily I had a classmate who loved this movie and told me when I needed to close my eyes!!! 2y
Clwojick Great job! 2y
vonnie862 @TheAromaofBooks I completely understand. That's what stopped me from watching it. I think I'm gonna do a lot of closing my eyes when I see the movie. 2y

At the time Vito Corleone didn't know the effect of this smile. It was chilling because it attempted no menace. He smiled as if it was some private joke only he himself could appreciate. But since he smiled in that fashion only in affairs that were lethal and since the joke wasn't really private and since his eyes didn't smile and since his outward character was usually so reasonable and quiet, the sudden unmasking of his true self was frightening

I read this for the 50th anniversary of the film. And while the film is undoubtedly excellent, do yourself a favor and read this book. There is a richness to the characters, even the minor ones, that is somewhat lost on screen. Michael's tragic, negative arc is so much more of a gut punch when you see it from the pages. A thoroughly satisfying read.

What could I possibly say about this book that hasn't already been said. Masterclass of a book. I belong to the school which says the book was better than the movie and it truly was!

To share my personal trivia, I read this when I was quite young and finished it overnight. Sleep time included, I read the book start-to-finish in under 48 hours. Kid you not.

I have read it in bits over the years and this is value for money.

Sometimes the movie is just as good, if not better than, the book. These two definitely fall into that category. It‘s been over ten years since I‘ve read either. No desire to pick them up again, but am now definitely in the mood for some Pacino and Deniro. Maybe I skip both The Godfather and Goodfellas (based on Wiseguy) and go straight to the best: The Godfather Part II! 🍿 🎥
