The Space Between the Stars
The Space Between the Stars | Anne Corlett
50 posts | 48 read | 98 to read
The Space between the Stars by Anne Corlett is an enthralling novel of love, the choices we make, and what it means to be human. It's also a dramatic road-trip across the stars, as a woman journeys across a plague-ravaged universe to the place she once called home, and the man she once loved. It was the end of days, but a new beginning After a virus wipes out most of humanity, Jamie leaves her isolated posting on the planet Soltaire and heads for Earth. She feels compelled to reach the Northumberland coast, to see if her ex-partner Daniel is still alive. Joining a band of misfits and fellow survivors, each with their own agenda, she struggles to understand her place in this new world. She'll wrestle with loss and heartache in order to gain one last chance at happiness. And when she reaches earth, Jamie will face something that could destroy that precious second chance - for all of them.

Interesting and reasonably written, with an protagonist that isn‘t so much whiny but as chronically indecisive, and rather annoyingly expecting certainty from everyone else.

New audiobook...the main complaint seems to be that the protagonist is whiny but that isn‘t coming across as strongly in the audio version.

Ok...I normally am pretty tolerant and fair with books BUT I couldn't get around how completely and utterly whiny the main character was. Maybe I'm just not being fair bc I keep pretty high standards for scifi...but I just couldn't do it. I shouldn't have to be as patient with a book as I am my two 3yr olds.

Good, but not great. Some of the individual scenes were good, though it just left something to be desired overall. I almost felt like it was so similar to Station 11 in theme that they could almost be part of a series.

I ended up loving this. A little slow to start, it tackles the apocalyptic scenario of what would happen if a disease wipes out most of the worlds population. Set in the future with different planets, space travel, and advanced technology. It's really about humanity with some romance and drama thrown in. So glad I read this even though it hasn't been super popular.

This book turned out really good. I had some misgivings when I first started reading it and almost bailed, but I'm so glad I didn't. It just started out slow. Think Station Eleven in space! A lot of talk about god, because a virus wiped out most of the human race, but the main protagonist wasn't a heavy believer so it was palatable for me.

I wanted to love this but it was not meant to be. If you are looking for a light summer read it would be fine. The concept was cool but it was filled with cliches and overdone tropes. I had been interested in the concept of how someone might handle being completely alone while they attempt to find others but Jamie finds out there are others almost immediately. The romance was pretty lukewarm & lots of over the top stuff happened. Meh

JenP I did win this as a #readitforward giveaway so that was nice. I think if you aren't looking for a serious or deeply thought provoking book, you might enjoy it. 7y

It was a struggle to finish this. I had high hopes but it was too slow paced and perhaps it was the narrator that made it so. I increased the speed to 1.5x. Maybe it would have been better as a novella ?? Three stars

One day I will get to this. 4321 is taking me forever to read. It's really good but it requires a book monogamy that is not typical for me. I've had to abandon other books while I make my way through 4321.

Perhaps this will be my next read.

Science Fiction often examines the human condition and how we would react in different situations. This beautiful examination of how we would act if 99.99% of humanity disappeared tells many stories, not just one. In a way that seems to reflect Watership Downs' exploration of different societies, the plot twists and turns to guide you through the solar system and back home.

A more literary bend on the post-apocalyptic/survival novel, this novel focuses on Jamie, who, with a group of survivors, journeys from outer colonized planets back to Earth. Through this journey, Jamie has to finally face her own personal shortcomings; she misplaces anger and blame to those around her to avoid her own grief and struggle. This is an end-of-the-world book that‘s not about the end of the world, but rather about how to continue on.

PDFs admittedly are super tiny on my phone (picture this on an iPhone 4, screen width

TobeyTheScavengerMonk This may be no help at all but I think there is a way, if you have a Kindle app on your phone, to e-mail a pdf to your Kindle account in a way that converts it to a regular Kindle file with appropriate margins. Maybe Google it? 8y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk Says Amazon: "PDFs can be converted to the Kindle format so you can take advantage of functionality such as variable font size, annotations, and Whispersync. To have a document converted to Kindle format (.azw), the subject line should be "convert" when e-mailing a personal document to your Send-to-Kindle address." 8y
lamaman2boys I liked the crop marks. It made me feel kind of fancy or something. Of course, I was on an iPad & still kept zooming! 8y
BookFreakOut @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I'll have to look into this, thanks for the info! My already terrible eyesight thanks you. 8y
BookFreakOut @lamaman2boys I think it's funny because I work in design, so to me crop marks means "not ready for public viewing!" But it is fun to see an "unfinished" file. 8y

This felt like a quite different approach to a post-apocalyptic scenario. It was very philosophical & fairly slow going in the beginning, but I really enjoyed the way that allowed the characters to develop. It was also pretty thought provoking about how we treat different groups of people in society. Also, my first Penguin First to Read!

I loved this. Beautifully written, insightful... just lovely. I couldn't put it down. It's a space drama but don't expect a lot of action; it's more philosophical and character driven. There were some moments that seemed a little far fetched, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This book was your standard-fare post-apocalyptic novel with a bit of space adventure thrown in. Jamie is dealing with a profound personal loss that occurred before a virus wiped out most of humanity. She's hard to get to know--it's who she is, but it did make things feel sloggy. Secondary characters were hit or miss, kind of cliché and underdeveloped. I'm a sucker for post-apocalyptic stories, though, so I did like the escape this read provided.

I was excited when I read the blurb about this book on NetGalley. It sounded like a woman sets out to find herself, stays alone, until a group arrives. Instead, the group arrives around page 3 and it becomes a space adventure. While not a bad one, it isn't what I thought this book would be. Limited humans around the galaxy due to a plague, some dangerous and all looking to survive. Main's group searches these planets to return to Earth.3-3.5 stars

@Liberty asked what are we currently reading? This is one of them. A woman who wanted space from her boyfriend after the loss of a baby travels to a remote planet where all of civilization has been wiped out. There is a small bit of allegory happening with this one. #allisnotlost
