Les Miserables (abridged)
Les Miserables (abridged) | Victor Hugo
One of the most widely read novels of all time, Les Misrables was the crowning literary achievement of Victor Hugo s stunning career. Though he was considered the greatest French writer of his day, Hugo was forced to flee the country because of his opposition to Napoleon III. While in exile he completed Les Misrables, an enormous melodrama set against the background of political upheaval in France following the rule of Napoleon I. This newly abridged edition of Les Misrables tells the story of the peasant Jean Valjean unjustly imprisoned, baffled by destiny, and hounded by his nemesis, the magnificently realized, ambiguously malevolent police detective Javert. As Valjean struggles to redeem his past, we are thrust into the teeming underworld of Paris with all its poverty, ignorance, and suffering. Just as cruel tyranny threatens to extinguish the last vestiges of hope, rebellion sweeps over the land like wildfire, igniting a vast struggle for the democratic ideal in France. A monumental classic dedicated to the oppressed, the underdog, the laborer, the rebel, the orphan, and the misunderstood, Les Misrables is a rich, emotional novel that captures nothing less than the entirety of life in nineteenth-century France.

For Wednesday‘s #bookquote, I‘m sharing this quote from Les Mis. This is my favorite quote from the book and movie. I listened to the book on audio and I enjoyed it but I don‘t think that was the right format for me to read it in because I don‘t know how the book ended. I fell asleep with the audiobook playing on my phone. I‘m going to reread it physically. I watched the musical on PBS and I also watched the movie. I enjoyed them both.

Mahalo @vlwelser for the #WonderousWednesday tag!😋

1️⃣ I live alone so I support my own habits & Max🐱is supportive if my reading doesn‘t get in the way of his eating!😼

2️⃣ One of my sisters & a couple of my nieces are fairly serious readers but not to the level of obsession that I have for it.📚

3️⃣ I own the tagged book, love the musical & movies & someday I WILL read it.🤩

I‘m late to the party so anybody who wants to join in, please do!

Texreader I love the recent Les Mis, I‘ve probably watched it more than 10 times, much more, so I bought and tried the book. Nope! Couldn‘t get past 300-something pages and bailed! (edited) 4y
vlwelser I've been digging into French books lately. I should add some Hugo to my list. ❤🇫🇷 4y
smalldogs_bigbooks2419 Most of my daytime reading is for school and nighttime reading is the only way I can fall asleep. Hubby has no choice but to be understanding. My mom and my mother in law are both avid readers. I‘d love to finish Great Expectations and read Little Women. 4y
Eggs @BookBudget19 educational reading leaves time for little else, I recall. I‘ve read Little Women but GE is a tougher challenge. (edited) 4y
Eggs Thanks for playing Deb👏🏻📚🌸🌺. I love # 1 🥳🤣 4y

Couldn‘t wait any longer for the last book! At last @jenniferw88 your #staycationintimeswap is on the move. Hope it reaches you by opening day! But the book I‘m still waiting for was kind of the whole unifying theme, darn it! I‘ll just send it (3/3) as soon as it arrives.
Our poor USPS is the newest target of our (corrupt, IMO) administration, so that plus COVID are making for delays I‘ve never seen. I‘m really sorry. Also, thx @Chrissyreadit

jenniferw88 That's ok with me - it will be a nice surprise when the last book arrives! 4y
Ireadkidlit ...and I‘m hoping to buy your love with the dark chocolate! 😃 I sent it frozen, but it might do better if you pop it in the freezer when it arrives—you know jet lag and all~ Thanks for understanding 💕 4y

BOOK 7
This book is more like poetry, it gives you one tragedy after another and underlying all this is raw human emotion of love, heartbreaks. It is filled with moments of overwhelming goodness, so touching, so beautiful.Valjean, Javert, Cosette, Marius and Fantine. I can't stress enough how exquisite this book is.I you haven't read it yet, do read it. I'll definitely re read it some time.

Starting my second #chunksterchallenge2020 book today. This one actually scares me, but it fits prompts for almost every challenge I‘m doing, so I‘m determined to finish it! The first one took 21 hours. Let‘s see how long this one takes me! @Amiable

Cortg Good Luck! 5y
Amiable Are you going to aim for 100 pages per week, or just see how it goes? 5y
BarkingMadRead @Amiable I‘m going to read for an hour after every book I finish. It should be 1-4 hours a week 5y

One Word : POETIC
This book is phenomenal. it is a rollercoaster of emotions, dazzling your senses but touching your heart at the same time. Everything is beautiful about this book, the themes, the characters, the writing. Jean Valjean, the central character, should be the compass for morality for everyone. This is one book that will stay with you for a really long time, one I'll recommend everyone to read.

1. Musical soundtracks. I absolutely love them!
2. Summer
3. It's a pretty steady mix between fantasy and thriller right now but it varies
4. I had a bagel....with cream cheese and bacon. Not a bacon person but it's actually pretty good!

Sace 1. I went through a period where all I listened to was musical soundtracks. Kiss Me Kate and Guys and Dolls were my faves! 5y
FantasyChick @RestlessFickleBookHoarder I love turning them on now and then. I'm currently slightly obsessed with Les Miserables 😊 5y

Has anyone started watching the Masterpiece Classics adaptation of Les Miserables? It's 6 episodes that started Sunday, and is airing on PBS. If the first episode is any indication, I think it's going to be a great series, but it definitely made me want to read the book. So, I started it on Serial Reader. I've never read a complete book on Serial Reader but I'm going to give it a try. 2 installments down, 131 to go!

MelissaSue81 I want to but I missed the first episode. I have the second one recorded, I think? 6y
Ingerella @MelissaSue81 Sometimes they air last week's episode right before the new one airs. You might still be able to catch it. It was really good! And Dominic West.. ♥️ 6y

Ok, so I bought this amazing scratch off poster!the big question is this... do i start from scratch and read every book or do I mark off the books I already read? No time limit or goal, just want to see how long it takes!

BookwormAHN I'd mark off the books that I've already read 😺 6y
MirrorMask That depends on if there are books you've already read that you have no desire to read again. 6y

Soubhiville I‘d scratch off the ones you‘ve read already. 6y
CouronneDhiver It‘s a major accomplishment either way! Have fun 😃 6y
BarkingMadRead Good point @MirrorMask thanks @Soubhiville @CouronneDhiver I think I will count any that I've read in the last 10 years, if it's been longer, it might be time for a re-read! 6y
TheBookStacker I just got this for Christmas and I think I‘m going to reread the books 6y
Tkgbjenn1 To make it more challenging and to revisit books you make have already read. Start at ground zero. 6y
Crinoline_Laphroaig How fun! I love me a list! Where did you get? 6y
BarkingMadRead @Crinoline_Laphroaig there was an ad on Facebook lol I cannot remember the name of the company but a google search would probably find it 6y

WorldsOkayestStepMom I want one so bad!!! Enjoy those books! 💖 6y
ReadingRover I‘ve been wanting this forever!!! Lol if it was me I‘d just start with what I‘d already read but that‘s cause I rarely do rereads. I‘m a devourer of new books. I can‘t get enough. I basically only reread if it‘s a book I‘ve totally forgotten and is part of a series. 6y
BarkingMadRead I hear ya @ReadingRover I ended up scratching off 5 or so! 6y

Last night it really hit me hard. A man I considered a good friend a few years ago committed suicide last week. He was simply an amazing person, always ready with a smile, did everything he could to make you feel good about yourself, had tons of people who loved him. My husband, though, did not love him. This man spread his charms everywhere, which included being flirtatious with every female in sight, including me, so you could see why 👇🏻👇🏻

Theshadedbuffalo My husband would dislike him. He found him smarmy and cocky. So, out of respect for my husband, I didn‘t allow myself to fully grieve the loss of this bright Star. I didn‘t want my husband to think too much into my tears, so I didn‘t shed them. My husband is in the military and is gone a lot, and he is gone now. Last night, the reality of Shane‘s loss hit me. Hard. And now I don‘t know how to stop the tears, and the sorrow. (edited) 6y

Theshadedbuffalo @Trashcanman thank you so much. It is. I think I really needed the release of grief, in terms of uncontrollable sobbing, but it left me a little empty yesterday. I‘m glad I was able to feel it, finally. ❤️ 6y

He was sinking; he was approaching the dark horizon. His breath had become intermittent;it was interrupted by a slight rattle. He had difficulty in moving his wrist, his feet lost all motion, and, at the same time that the distress of the limbs and the exhaustion of the body increased, all the majesty of the soul rose and displayed itself upon his forehead. The light of the unknown world was already visible in his eye.
