I finished reading this yesterday. Had some difficulties figuring out some pronunciations and I‘m not familiar with a good number of the references Milton made, but it was still an enjoyable read! I can see why it‘s said to be one of the greatest works of English literature. I would love to take a course on Milton to understand this poem better and found reading A Preface to Paradise Lost helped me. I feel I really ought to give this 10/10
I might pull this one off the shelves and read it next month. It has been on my TBR for way too long. And I've already read The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri, so this is definitely the next step.

Described as one of the greatest epic poems in the English language, Paradise Lost tells the story of the Fall of Man, a tale of immense drama and excitement, of rebellion and treachery, of innocence pitted against corruption, in which God and Satan fight a bitter battle for control of mankind's destiny.

One of the finest books in the English Language. My love for this text grows every time I read it

I like it. Has bit of a Dan Brown feel to it. I wonder if it's hiding anymore secrets...🤔
I‘m very disappointed that I cannot find my copy of #Paradise Lost to stage with this shirt for a photo. The shirt, however, has words from the epic poem on it and that pretty cool, right? #songsofsummer

I LOVE thrift shop book shopping.
This defaced Paradise Lost makes me laugh and I totally bought it. .

The road, the stranger, the night of the gun.
Rainbirds choke.
Silence, misery.
Paradise lost.
Yeah, this came out kind of dark, oops.
Day 9 #riotgrams #spinepoetry
A first edition of Paradise Lost (1667) still in its original binding and with a manuscript inscription from contemporary Poet Laureate John Dryden ?
"Three Pets in the distant Ages born
Greece, Italy, and England did adorn.
The First in loftiness of thought surpass'd
The Next in Majesty, in both ye Last
The Force of Nature could no farther go;
To make a Third, she joyn'd ye former two.

Look at all these books this friend of mine on a book page sent me! Amazing!❤️📚
Some of my favorite books in my collection are these. I remember admiring them as a kid at my grandma‘s house. They were her stepdad‘s first wife‘s. Printed in 1901.
I 💙 annotating in books. (especially denser texts like Paradise Lost where I really have to work to understand wtf is going on, lol)
Do you ever write in your books?
this is what I do for fun when I‘ve run out of schoolwork for the week and need to get creatively charged before I write. 🤷🏼♀️

Heavier going than last time I read it. I dozed off several times while reading it.
Starting more hw. My husband was acting all salty like he‘d read this before. He told me it‘s what Peter Pan is based off of. When I asked him where he got that idea he said that it looks like there are fairies on the cover 😂😂 Haha I love that man.
Today we drove over an hour to Books A Million to spend our gift card we got for Christmas ? It was so much fun and of course really, really hard to decide what to buy. In the end this was our haul plus two books for the kids: The Day the Crayons Went Home and The Pout Pout Fish and the Bully Shark.
The guy at the checkout was amused by our choices, "In the mood for some 'light' reading I see" ?
As John Milton's Satan says, "Which way I fly is hell; myself am hell" ???
Reading Paradise Lost in this view makes me wonder if paradise is lost or if I have am, in fact, already living there...
A bit of light reading for my dissertation.
I know a lot of people can't read this book and I struggled a lot too, but once you get used to the language and the rythm, it is an incredibly beautiful piece of art. Would totally recommend, even if it is tiring!
Time to juggle both insta and listy 😂😂. I'm sure it'll be fine. Might as well start off with an old fave photo of mine. The lighting just looks really dramatic.
My fav epic poem right after my beloved Dante. http://variety.com/2017/tv/global/sherlock-hobbit-martin-freeman-paradise-lost-t...
Getting started on this awesome story. Was gripped from the off despite the difficult language

I used to be skeptical when people talked about "the good old days," but I get it now. Remember when The Handmaid's Take and 1984 were just dark dystopian fictions? #Paradise

"The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven"
I somehow made it through getting an English degree without ever having read Milton, so here I am with some light bedtime reading.
I mean, Satan, right?
Shoutout to Mr. Brocklehurst, though. #favoritevillain #riotgrams
I went a little different direction with today's #readjanuary prompt. These aren't #setinmycity, per se... but I live in a city named after one of the authors, and on a street named after the other. I love literary place names!
Satan; on the naughty list since before the naughty list existed. This is from the beautiful two-volume Folio edition my parents gave me for my birthday 😊 #SeasonsReadings #charactersonthenaughtylist
I'm not a big #poetry reader though I used to love writing poems as a child. These are the only three volumes I currently own. SeasonsReadings

This morning Mr. Postman brought me this book. It was from Amazon... I rarely buy books from them, so I was surprised. I checked my email to check if I had ordered it (I order so many books...), but nothing. Then, I remembered a conversation I had with a dear friend of mine during which I told her I had not yet read this book...
What a great early Xmas gift! ♥️♥️♥️

"Eject him tainted now, and purge him off."
Book 11 line 45
"To remove him I decree,
And send him from the garden forth to till
The ground whence he was taken, fitter soil." Book 11 lines 96-8
"Seest thou yon dreary plain, forlorn, and wild,
The seat of desolation, void of light,
Save what the glimmering of these livid flames
Cast pale and dreadful?"

ENGL 3P22: Literature in Milton's Time
Including: Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained, by John Milton
The Broadview Anthology of Seventeenth Century Verse and Prose
"Infernal world, and thou profoundest hell Receive thy new possessor: one who brings A mind not to be changed by place or time. The mind is its own place, and in itself Can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven. What matter where, if I be still the same (...) Here at least We shall be free (...) Here we may reign secure, and in my choice To reign is worth ambition though in hell: Better to reign in hell, than serve in heaven."
"The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, or a hell of heaven. "
Satan as written by Milton is one of my all-time #favevillians. I really love everything about the way he retells this origin story and makes God and Satan and the Angels seem so human.
