Grownup: A Story by the Author of Gone Girl
Grownup: A Story by the Author of Gone Girl | Gillian Flynn
Gillian Flynn s Edgar Award-winning homage to the classic ghost story, published for the first time as a standalone A canny young woman is struggling to survive by perpetrating various levels of mostly harmless fraud. On a rainy April morning, she is reading auras at Spiritual Palms when Susan Burke walks in. A keen observer of human behavior, our unnamed narrator immediately diagnoses beautiful, rich Susan as an unhappy woman eager to give her lovely life a drama injection. However, when the "psychic" visits the eerie Victorian home that has been the source of Susan s terror and grief, she realizes she may not have to pretend to believe in ghosts anymore. Miles, Susan s teenage stepson, doesn t help matters with his disturbing manner and grisly imagination. The three are soon locked in a chilling battle to discover where the evil truly lurks and what, if anything, can be done to escape it. The Grownup, which originally appeared as What Do You Do? in George R. R. Martin s "Rogues" anthology, proves once again that Gillian Flynn is one of the world s most original and skilled voices in fiction."

Thank you @CSeydel , this was exactly what I needed to track the worst book that I read for 2024. January worst book was easy pick, as I was thoroughly disappointed in this book. #BookBracket #WorstBookOfTheYear

2.8⭐️ this one was bizarre. Super short, super quick read. It just didn‘t sit well with me. It was OK, just wasn‘t my favorite.

Con artist finds herself in a haunted home. Or does she? A vivid & darkly funny novella. The opening is a little over-the-top, and the R-rated first paragraph probably shouldn‘t be listened to without headphones, but the story is interesting, possibly ghostly, and then twists. #ghoststories #crime #novella #TeamWhoYaGonnaCall #audiobook

How do you keep a thousand books in one room and then call that room a den?

This was an okay little book. Saw both “twists” coming but really likes the ending.

Book #28
4.5/5
I've read all of Flynn's books to date, and thoroughly enjoyed them. Gone Girl was SO much better than the movie made it seem, and I actually found her other books better than Gone Girl. The Grownup is a short story. Flynn's writing is so good at drawing the reader in, and I loved it. My only criticism is that it should not have been a short story!

Kris10H She did such a good job of setting up the main character and storyline, and the way and how quickly it ended just seemed like I was being cheated out of a complete experience. 10mo

This is a very twisty short story. I loved the suspense and almost gothic theme, but the ending let it down for me.
I read on my lunch break today. So I would recommend it if someone wanted a quick read to pass an hour.

A twisty, creepy short read from Gillian Flynn. An unnamed female narrator manipulates people every day in her job - giving hand jobs to wealthy men to reading people's "auras". The middle part of this short read was where the Flynn magic really kicked in,it was definitely very creepy and left me wondering just what kind of thriller was I reading! Whilst a short read it was still a scary psychological thriller with twists I didn't anticipate.⭐⭐⭐⭐

48/22 I feel like I should of waited til October for this one really but it was calling me now. I really enjoyed this short story about a psychic fake psychic and a maybe haunted old house. I can‘t say too much but Flynn packs a lot in to 79 pages and it left me wanting more. Definitely one to pick up if you need to get out of a slump. An extremely quick, intriguing and enjoyable read. Plus I love an unexpected opening line 😂

I was loving it up until the end... Still, if you love Gillian Flynn as much as I do you'll quite enjoy the writing! She paints an amazing picture and has such interesting characters. So, even though the ending wasn't for me, I had fun reading it :)

Definitely a quick little read that was pretty fun. However I don‘t like how the plot twist was twisted….if that makes sense? It made the ending lame.

runswithscissors007 @Andrea4 I would not be surprised if it is a DNF! It‘s pretty niche and a bit dense! (AoT). No pressure. Would not hurt my feelings! The tagged book however is a great speedy read! 4y

This was a strange read, partially because I amn't used to short stories. Aside from that, it read like multiple different stories, starting with a self-confessed con artist describing how she works, then a great creepy middle section that's a little "The Turn of the Screw"-esque, but the ending was quite disappointing to me. 3⭐

I try to read at least one horror type book in October every year. It isn‘t a genre that I love but have found some gems on occasion. Thought I would give this one a try. It has been awhile since I read a “ghost” story.

I‘m not so sure about the ending...

This short story had me gripped for about the first half. An “aura reader,” psychic, and professional at hand jobs (yes literally) has met potentially her match.

A woman begs her to help with her son who is simply evil. Something is really off at home... but could there be more hidden beneath the surface?

That ending left me wanting much more closure. Wish it could have lived up to the rest of the book.
