Neuromancer (Anniversary)
Neuromancer (Anniversary) | William Gibson
SPECIAL 20TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION THE MOST IMPORTANT AND INFLUENTIAL SCIENCE FICTION NOVEL OF THE PAST TWO DECADES Twenty years ago, it was as if someone turned on a light. The future blazed into existence with each deliberate word that William Gibson laid down. The winner of Hugo, Nebula, and Philip K. Dick Awards, "Neuromancer" didn't just explode onto the science fiction scene it permeated into the collective consciousness, culture, science, and technology. Today, there is only one science fiction masterpiece to thank for the term "cyberpunk," for easing the way into the information age and Internet society. "Neuromancer"'s virtual reality has become real. And yet, William Gibson's gritty, sophisticated vision still manages to inspire the minds that lead mankind ever further into the future."

#HyggeHour #AuldLangSpine

Thought I could read this during the game, but it requires intense concentration. Giving myself an hour to really get immersed. I think the plot is picking up and hopefully I‘ll start to understand more of what‘s going on as I become more invested.

CSeydel Update: well, I read one paragraph before I was lassoed to help with homework. While I was helping with homework, kid 2 reported that all the rain last week had caused a major leak in his room that he hadn‘t noticed until now, so I spent the next hour blow drying books and setting up fans to try to dry out the carpet 😩😖 1mo

#HyggeHour

Today is certainly the perfect day for #hygge — I‘m in Southern California in the path of the “atmospheric river” bringing major storms. Rain and more rain! All day the phone has been buzzing with weather alerts, flood warnings and advisories to stay off the freeways.

I‘m in my new LLBean flannel pajamas that I got for Christmas 😍 and sipping candy cane green tea. And not thinking about how we‘re going to get to school tomorrow…

TheBookHippie Oy. I‘m glad you‘re safe and dry for now! I totally get the getting to school safely. 2mo

I know this is foundational af for sci-fi, essentially coining cyberpunk, but I think I really learned I'm not a huge sci-fi person. Some of the philosophical elements were cool and I did appreciate the way Gibson left descriptions of cyberspace often vague, allowing the book to remain undated way longer those most sci-fi. Wish there was more than one female character. Doesn't pass the Bechdel test lmao.

Bk3 of #WinterGames is done. I‘m having an awful start to the games, sorry! Next book will be a Xmas theme though🤞Loved this classic Scifi, one of the first cyberpunk stories. He pretty much invented the terminology we use today like cyberspace, jacked in, AI,VR etc. Case is in a tailspin after having his ability to jack in stripped, until a girl with mirrored eyes & knives for nails gives him an offer he can‘t refuse. #TeamEvergreen 4246pts👇

Love the concept, had a great time thinking about what it all means, hated the rad descriptions and felt very dumb and confused at times. The amazingly cool scenes and descriptions really are to it's determent. however, buried under them is a really clever and well constructed story.

Despite being a SF fan since I was a kid, I somehow never read Neuromancer until now. First published in 1984, the story of a down-on-his-luck cyber cowboy caught up in a complex heist almost never reads as dated, even if we use fewer wires these days. The focus on AI is especially timely in this age of ChatGPT, but the flawed, desperate humans are what make the story timeless.

Considered a Sci-fi staple; the book that coined ‘cyberspace,‘ and birthed the cyberpunk genre.

Gibson‘s writing is vague and often confusing. Yet, there is something endearing in how it refuses to talk down to its audience, as if it‘s written for the people who live in the world Gibson creates. It‘s a tough read but I never felt myself wanting to quit even if I never quite knew what was happening.

Hard to recommend but still glad I read it.

Mind blown, open wide.
This author coined the term "cyberspace". He vividly built a world that would be later called cyberpunk. This sci-fi classic was NOT an easy read for me, but worth it.

This book started off interesting but by the end it seemed convoluted, I've heard good things about it over the years but the writing style just isn‘t for me.

I found the story difficult to follow because it jumps around a lot.

There was potential for world building but I could never see it in my mind's eye, due to the poor writing which lacked the details.

The storyline could have been cool, but the author just complicates it.

DrexEdit I keep thinking I need to read William Gibson. He seems like canon somehow. Maybe the actual birth of a genre is not all that interesting though? 😄 Maybe you have to wait for others to pick up and refine it and make it interesting. Hmmmmm. . . 2y
TheNeverendingTBR @DrexEdit I guess it's all down to preference. 2y
RaeLovesToRead I also wasn't a fan. The funniest thing about it is that the MC keeps acquiring awesome weapons and then not using them. One weapon he literally acquires and then dumps in a bin. He has a friend with razor claws... do they see any action? Nooo. Chekhov would be most unimpressed. 2y
See All 7 Comments
TheNeverendingTBR @RaeLovesToRead I noticed this as well!! 😝 It could have been so good, but the authors writing was disappointing! 😏😏😏😏 2y
RaeLovesToRead Also, it wasn't at all clear what was going on a lot of the time! An influential book, for sure, but not at all fun to read 😒 2y
TracyReadsBooks I first picked up this book because it‘s the origination of cyberpunk and really thought I should read it. I liked (didn‘t love) it but had to read it twice before I got it. Even so, I‘m not entirely convinced I really got it…but reading it twice was enough. 😂🤷‍♀️ 2y

I can‘t quite describe this book in words that would summarize it in a complete and whole way. It reads like a modern sci-fi style book but the impact of it makes me think of modern classics like 1984 or Fahrenheit 451. The book leaves a lot to your own imagination, being vague in some areas but also extremely specific in others. I absolutely thought this book was an excellent read and look forward to reading it again!

Vansa So true. The best description I would be able to come up with would be 'The Matrix' but darker and grittier! 3y

This book is undoubtedly influential as it advanced the genre and pretty much created a sub-genre. But I felt so detached the entire time. I could have taken my time and read a brief summary with definition of terms for each chapter but after I did that for part one and still didn‘t connect at all I plowed through quickly. I still did want to read it because it‘s foundational but even if everything was clear I still wouldn‘t rate it too highly.

Have been on Litsy sporadically the past few days, so am posting my final 5 days of #12Booksof2020 as one post with brief notes for each.
*Gaines' A Lesson Before Dying had been on my TBR for awhile. I read it in late June, in the wake of George Floyd's murder & the BLM protests. I was profoundly moved by this novel of compassion & humanity.
*The North Water. Existential literature smuggled in an adventure story/serial killer narrative.👇

vivastory Atmospheric & foreboding, both literally & metaphorically.
*The First Bad Man. Crass, irreverent, strange, hilarious, oddly touching. I expected to hate this novel & yet I was strangely moved by it.
*Neuromancer. One of two cyberpunk classics read in 2020 & this was the better of the two. The source for countless internet jargon & still surprisingly fresh years later.
*Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead. As anarchic as the poet
3y
vivastory it quotes, I loved this novel featuring one of the more memorable characters of the year. I can't wait to read Tokarczuk again.@andrew65 3y
Megabooks I seriously need to get to Drive Your Plow, but oh the siren song of nonfiction! 3y
See All 14 Comments
vivastory @Megabooks It's funny you mention nf, because I almost added to my note on the Gaines that when I read it there were a lot of racist self-education lists floating around & they invariably contained exclusively nonfiction. After I read As I Lay I couldn't help but feel that fiction was getting the short end of the stick on not being included on those lists. I do think those lists are great & I think self-education is a lofty goal, but... 3y
Megabooks I agree that education happens with both fiction and nonfiction. The education/escapism line between nonfiction/fiction is not as clear as some people think. I find memoirs more escapist than fiction, and I‘m loving the satire of race and a NXVIM-like company/cult in Black Buck. That book could definitely be taken as educational in corporate racism. (edited) 3y
EmilyM Loved Drive Your Plow! 3y
BarbaraBB I loved Lesson and Plow so much too. I haven‘t read this Miranda July but will look out for it. Neuromancer I couldn‘t get through unfortunately 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y

The Neuromancer Trilogy formed not only the Sci-Fi genre and created Cyberpunk, but had also a great impact on other arts and our society.

My book actually is all three books in one and I'd recommend reading all parts as close as possible. The story is very complex, but fascinating from the beginning.

I already plan to reread it, since I admit that I didn't get everything that was going on.

Definitely a highlight!

Well, I finished it. I didn‘t enjoy it, I‘m not entirely sure what happened, but it‘s done. I can see why this was a seminal work, but I didn‘t like it. I‘m glad I didn‘t finish it for my class all those years ago, because I can‘t imagine having to write about it.

#bookspinbonanza 10/20, halfway there with ten days to go! Think I can get at least my next five.

TheAromaofBooks Sometimes you can appreciate the writing without really enjoying the story... good luck on the second half of the Bonanza! I'm still on book three! 😂 4y
RamsFan1963 @ravenlee It may be sacrilegious to some people, but I think the book is overrated. Yes it was very influential during the 80s cyberpunk phase, but as a book alone it's not that good a story. Gibson has written much better books since then. 4y
ravenlee @TheAromaofBooks I have often had the dichotomy of disliking a story while appreciating its writing (Madame Bovary for example), but I didn‘t like the writing here either. I get why it‘s important and I‘m glad I got through it, but...eh. 4y
ravenlee @RamsFan1963 I agree. I don‘t generally like sci-fi anyway, partly because I find too often the world-building minutiae overwhelm any kind of story or character development. Also I feel it ages more swiftly than other literature, which is definitely the case with this one. Honestly, it made me think of the movie Hackers, and how cheesy it was and I still like it, but it makes more sense to me than this world. 🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 4y
DaveGreen7777 I had a so-so reaction to this book as well. 😕 I thought some of the concepts were cool, but the characters were kind of bland to me, and overall I just wasn‘t very interested in what was happening. 4y

Starting this one, with some reservations. According to the almost-completely-faded receipt, I bought this in Dec 2003. It bookmarked page 30, which is as far as I got that time. It was for a sci-fi independent study with my absolute favorite lit professor, and the only book he assigned that I didn‘t finish (for that class). Fingers crossed for a better go this time - this is #bookspinbonanza 10 and my set in the future bingo space.
