Professor Theo Cray is trained to see patterns where others see chaos. So when mutilated bodies found deep in the Montana woods leave the cops searching blindly for clues, Theo sees something they missed. Something unnatural. Something only he can stop. As a computational biologist, Theo is more familiar with digital code and microbes than the dark arts of forensic sleuthing. But a field trip to Montana suddenly lands him in the middle of an investigation into the bloody killing of one of his former students. As more details, and bodies, come to light, the local cops determine that the killer is either a grizzly gone rogueor Theo himself. Racing to stay one step ahead of the police, Theo must use his scientific acumen to uncover the killer. Will he be able to become as cunning as the predator he huntsbefore he becomes its prey?

I'm enjoying reading a story every day from Dark Tales, and the Mary Stewart buddy read is going as delightfully as I hoped, but the tagged book was a dud. I actually really liked the sciencey bio-informatics bits but the professor MC is insufferable. I kept yelling at the book as he always made the absolute worst decisions possible 😭💀
Oh well, book 8 for #scarathlon #spookyghostclub, my 2nd #trappedinaspookyhouse + 369 (!) word search words

TheAromaofBooks I've had this book on my Kindle (I got it for free some time or other) for a long time now but still haven't gotten to it. You're making me feel like that's a good decision 😂 6mo
Larkken @TheAromaofBooks lol I hear you, this one was languishing on my kindle too! the sciencey parts were honestly pretty good - maybe the narrator would annoy you less than he did me? 6mo
TheAromaofBooks I'm sure I'll try it one of these days, but it definitely isn't high on the list LOL 6mo

A fast-paced, exciting mystery in which the nerdy professor is determined to expose and catch a serial killer that none of law enforcement believes exists. I'll definitely return to this author!

What a bloody romp. The Naturalist is chaotic, plotty, exciting crime reading. At times it feels vibrantly original, at others it almost (maybe?) crosses the line into mania. I have zero regrets that I‘ve started this series which is the perfect tonic for a busy brain at the end of a week. 100% fun.

This gets the worst rating because it gave me such hope for the first 200+ pages and then went down hill fast. Predictable, generic and unbelievable conclusion that had so much potential. I‘m glad I didn‘t buy it or I‘d want my money back...

I‘ve been curious about this one for ages!! A quick read with short chapters-I loved that. The MC, Dr. Theo Cray, is a super-smart and nerdy scientist. I loved all of the science and nature in the story. HOWEVER for all of his smarts, Theo is not very bright. I kept thinking he should stick to the science and research and stop trying to solve criminal cases. The story required so much suspension of disbelief.

When you WANT the protagonist to be eaten by the killer bear, or the killer posing as a bear or whatever is going on... you just know it‘s not going well. 😂😂 I thought this was a clumsy book full of holes and mistakes and one smug jerk of a protagonist that I really hoped would become bear poop. 🤷🏼‍♀️ #noapologies

I finished The Naturalist tonight, and it definitely made for a #suspensefulsunday . I overall enjoyed this book, though it was initially a bit of a slow burn. I liked Dr. Theo Cray for his quirks, and the sciency stuff was fun to read. I went ahead and bought the next book so I'll be able to continue the story. I'd give this one 4/5 stars.

Ingerella @tricours I'm not sure! Been planking at home to work on my core. Monday I couldn't do one. last night I did 16! All singles but 16! Coach said look up at my feet/the bar when they touch, then straight ahead..never down. Seemed to help! 6y
tricours How much planking? 😅 I struggle to even lift my legs to 90 degrees when hanging there. My bf, who is in considerably worse shape than me, got the t2b right the first time he tried... 6y

Ingerella @tricours it's taken me months!! I just literally started on the living room floor on elbows and toes for 1 minute and added 5 seconds every day. Some days I'm too sore from the workouts to do it. Also, for scaled my coach has us kick up and out as high as we can. I think that helped a little too. It was more challenging than high knees and I could work on the height of my kick a little each time. 6y
Ingerella @tricours also, I practice the swing ALOT. 6y
tricours You mean kipping? well, you‘ve inspired me to try harder! 😊 I think my hip flexer or whatever it‘s called is pretty weak, even though my core is quite strong. I‘m sure having thighs of thunder hardly helps either 😂 6y

The book itself was good entertainment, but the audiobook narrator (Will Damron) was awful! His over-dramatizing made all the parts that were supposed to be suspenseful ridiculous, and honestly, did he have to imitate the gunfire? That was cringeworthy to say the least. (And did the author really have to include it?) All the resistance the MC met also felt forced and like a cheap trick to engage the reader.

Ingerella I'm reading this one. It's suddenly picked up and I don't want to put it down! I guess I'm glad I didn't do audio for this one! 6y

This book is a wonderful mystery. It's actually a page turner, you can't keep it down once you start reading it. Through the last quarter of the book seem to lack in the narrative or maybe just is plain. It would have been a real nice if we had the murderer's perspective on the killing he makes. It would also have been nice if the murdered had his own narrative.

MelAnn I am reading this right now - the first part of the book reeled me in with humor - I related to Theo Cray in a lot of ways - his clumsiness and his knack for being in all the wrong places at the right time. Lol but I‘ve found those particular tidbits missing as I‘m further into the book. 6y

This was a great read! I appreciate the author making the story believable and creating a nontypical hero. It's nice to see the nerd win sometimes! The author does abruptly drop the story at the end of the book and I was a little annoyed until I saw there is a second book coming in March 2018(?). This is a fast, interesting read that keeps you guessing. I'd definitely recommend!
