Codename Villanelle | Luke Jennings
She is the perfect assassin. A Russian orphan, saved from the death penalty for the brutal revenge she took on her gangster father's killers. Ruthlessly trained. Given a new life. New names, new faces - whichever fits. Her paymasters call themselves The Twelve. But she knows nothing of them. Konstantin is the man who saved her, and the one she answers to. She is Villanelle. Without conscience. Without guilt. Without weakness. Eve Polastri is the woman who hunts her. MI5, until one error of judgment costs her everything. Until stopping a ruthless assassin becomes more than her job. It becomes personal. Originally published as ebook singles: Codename Villanelle, Hollowpoint, Shanghai and Odessa.

As amazing as the show (Killing Eve) based on this book is, the book is quite dull in comparison. It's really great to see how the makers of the show turned a not-so-great book into a totally binge-worthy show.
I am definitely gonna continue watching the show, but not the books.
Show - 5/5🌟
Book - 3/5🌟

Octoberwoman I loved the show so much, I was obsessed with it. I bought the book but haven‘t gotten around to it yet as I was afraid it wouldn‘t be as good. 1d

It‘s hard to write action books. What‘s exciting on screen translates differently when it is on the page. (ever try to read the Bourne books? Ooof.) This one certainly keeps you engaged. Best part is the characters of Eve, who is flawed but passionate, and Villanelle, who is an alluring sociopath. The ending sets up the next book, which is mildly annoying. But it‘s fun & I looked forward to reading it every day!

This was a fun, quick read. But 💯% the show is better than the book. Because Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a flipping genius and Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer are perfection. It was interesting to read the source material, but I don't see myself continuing with the books.

PerksOfBeingABookworm I‘ve considered reading the books, but have tentatively decided against it. You‘re right, the writers and actors are amazing. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a genius storyteller. 4y

@OriginalCyn620 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

I still need to finish NOS4A2, but I love A Discovery of Witches and Killing Eve. And a confession: I love the Killing Eve series more than the books- which are really more novellas than novels. The cast is just so amazing!

PerksOfBeingABookworm I love Killing Eve! We don‘t have cable TV, so I have to wait until season 3 hits Hulu to catch up. 4y

⭐️⭐️⭐️ A good start to the series. The Villanelle of the books is a far more scary and psychopathic character than the TV series.

Christine OMG, I want to click on your comment so badly but I‘m afraid to because I‘m not caught up! Work and emergency distance learning for my kids is killing my reading AND watching life!! 😭 This motivates me to try to find time to catch up this weekend, though! 5y
MicheleinPhilly @Christine 😂 No worries! I literally only said “Have you been watching?” 😂 Let me know when you get caught up and GOOD LUCK with everything! 5y
Christine 😂😂😂 Too funny!! I will report back ASAP. And thank you! 5y
Christine Kenny!!!!! 😭😭😭 I‘ve only watched the first episode but expect I‘ll watch the rest of the season this week. But still - Kenny!!! 😭😭😭 4y
MicheleinPhilly @Christine I know. 😢 That KILLED me. Ugh. 7 weeks later and I‘m still not over it! 😭 4y
MicheleinPhilly @Christine I am not emotionally prepared for the season finale tonight. No spoilers for the season but UGH, my heart. 4y
Christine OMG, Michele! I haven‘t caught up yet bc I‘m distracted by how our country is falling apart (even more than usual 😡😭), but this inspires me to try to make time today for the episode and a half or so that I have left!! One of the last things I saw was Niko in the hospital telling Eve to “Piss off forever” (he‘s alive?!). 😭 Like you said, I‘m not at all recovered from Kenny‘s death yet, but now I fear what else is coming based on your comment!! 4y
MicheleinPhilly @Christine Honestly I feel like KE is the only thing I‘ve had to look forward to over the last 8 weeks. I actually LOLed at the robotic “Piss off forever.” Dude really should have told her that in season 1. But there is still so much in play. I‘m nervous and excited. And my city is currently on fire so I will look forward to 1 hour of much needed distraction. 4y
Christine Oh my gosh, I hadn‘t even checked in on how things are in Philadelphia today (so crazy that even when basically listening to news or reading tweets all day I still can‘t keep track of all of what‘s happening). Has it gotten even worse? (But LOL, too true re: Niko! 🤣) 4y
MicheleinPhilly @Christine It is terrible. We‘re under curfew now from 6 to 6. Public transit is shut down. Entire sections of the city are shut down to traffic and pedestrians. Eve and Villanelle are the only things that will get me through this night. Stay safe! 4y
Christine Damn. Awful. Please take care, and I‘m so glad you have E & V to look forward to!! ❤️ 4y
Christine Just finished Ep 7 and I‘m still trying to wrap my head around everything that happened. 😳 Hope the finale was pleasing to you!! 4y
MicheleinPhilly @Christine It was amazing. I loved it. 4y
Christine Yay! ❤️ 4y
Christine It really was good! What‘s your guess on what happens with E & V after that ending? 4y
MicheleinPhilly @Christine Well my filthy mind has some suggestions for them. 😜 I‘m thinking they will be working together to take down The Twelve - probably with Carolyn. That‘s what I am hoping for anyway. I feel like we were deprived this season of those interactions b/c of all the new/secondary characters. So I‘m really just hoping they remain in one another‘s orbit for the foreseeable future cause their chemistry is 🔥🔥🔥. 4y
Christine LOL, right there on the bridge, please!! 😁 And yes - agree with your hope for more focus on them next season! 4y

I had watched the first episode of “Killing Eve” before realizing the show was based on a book. Being a book lover, I knew I needed to read the book first before continuing to watch. However, I can honestly say the show is far superior to the book (I never say that!). The book was poorly written, poorly developed, and under-whelming for having such a great potential premise.

One of the rare occasions where I can say that the TV show is better than the book.

The thing that I liked about the book was Villanelle's backstory, about how she was picked by the twelve and trained for her role as a fierce assassin.

So much fun! This is the novella that the show is based on, so there are some differences, but just like Eve, I'm beyond intrigued with Villanelle. Their cat and mouse relationship isn't featured much in this story, but I'm hopeful that the second one will.

Having been addicted to and delighted by the two TV adaptations of this trilogy, heading for the original books was too tempting. Another dose of Villanelle, see? This book has a number of “Ah, I see how they used that on TV moments!” But overall it‘s different enough to hit the spot. I never fully bought into Eve‘s obsession with the assassin on TV but her character is more rounded, plausible here. I won‘t oversell this book but it worked for me.

Caroline2 I loved the series too and I‘ve been intrigued by the books. Good to know it holds it own. Stacked! 👍🏻 5y

Love Killing Eve and I really enjoyed the book it's based on as well! The show is quirkier and has richer supporting characters; the book is focused very heavily on Villanelle and Eve (and moreso on the former) and Villanelle's backstory isn't a mystery. There are enough similarities that it's fun to see what inspired the plot lines on the show but enough differences that I wasn't bored or feeling like one was a lesser copy of the other.

Leftcoastzen I stacked love, love ,love the show. 6y

WhatWouldJaneDo @rretzler I'm enjoying it! Phoebe Waller-Bridge brought a different level of humor to the show (and more awesome female characters, I don't think Carolyn Martins is in the book). It's very heavily from Villanelle's perspective so she's not really mystery, and she's definitely a psychopath but everyone she's killed so far is super evil so that reminds me a bit of Dexter. 6y

Last time I had this book in front of my window the snow was all gone and it was open and in the 60s. I just want to start planting and turn off my heat. Is that too much for a girl to ask of mid-April weather. Finished the book today, pretty short. Prefer the show, the humor and quirkiness of the characters is not present in the novel. That said I am on to “No Tomorrow”.

Eh. A rare case of finding the TV show/movie better. The writing is well-paced & I really enjoy its sparseness. But the warmth & humor of the show were missed. Villanelle *only* has sex and kills people which got repetitive at first, and then wearying by the end. And the book doesn‘t have a conclusion, which I loathe.

CampbellTaraL Nooo! I was afraid this would be the case with this book. But I'm glad the creator of the show found inspiration and made something SO good. 6y

As inspiration for BBC show “Killing Eve”, this story features some strong female characters, but for me it didn‘t have much more going for it. I didn‘t find it particularly gripping or engaging and I don‘t think I‘ll be picking up the sequel. Dare I say it, the TV show was much better in my eyes!
