Leni doesn't remember much of her father before the Vietnam war, but since his return to the US she has learnt to walk on eggshells.
When the opportunity arises to move to Alaska, she hopes for better, calmer but as summer ends and the 18 hour nights begin, danger lingers everywhere.
Kirstin Hannah is fantastic at fully rounded characters and creating an atmosphere.
An unforgettable read.
5⭐
I haven‘t cared about the characters in a book this much in a long time. Especially Leni and Matthew. Kristin Hannah made the state of Alaska come alive for me. This was so very good. From the moment I started to the very last second, I was fully engaged. The narration by Julia Whelan was exceptional.
First time I read a book by this author, can you believe it?😳I have this book since 2018 thinking that I would not like it...but...
This book is intense and has the trigger of domestic violence. It is very explicit in the physical and psychological abuse. I will say this part was clinically well described. Also it was symptoms related with PTSD were well described.
Ernt and Cora married very young, Cora was 15 or 16 and Ernt was 25.⬇️

1️⃣ My middle name, Margaret, was my mother's first name, which she didn't like. She used her middle name instead. So why I ended up with it I will never know. I asked once and was told my middle name needed to be long since my first name was short. WTF!🙄🤯🤪

“For we few, the sturdy, the strong, the dreamers, Alaska is home, always and forever, the song you hear when the world is still and quiet. You either belong here, wild and untamed yourself, or you don‘t. I belong.”

Kristin Hannah is usually a mixed bag for me. Love the stories but I sometimes find the writing cheesy. This was possibly the best-written of those I‘ve read. Some dark subject matter and it started out kind of slow, but the second half really picks up.
Kristin Hannah is a definite favourite of mine and so far this book does not disappoint.
With the incredible back drop of Alaska this is a beautiful story about love and loss, but mostly importantly what it takes to survive. #pick #thegreatalone #love #summerread
I‘ve seen so many recommendations for this book and I decided to go ahead and take the plunge and I can‘t believe I waited so long! This book was just amazing. Kristin Hannah has such a way with her storytelling of making the readers feel all of the emotions! I was angry. I was sad. I bawled my eyes out and I was happy. Just wow. I definitely need to read all of her books now.
I think I will start this tomorrow.
I‘ve heard it‘s very good.
Have you read it?
I bought this as an add on for my BOTM. It sounds good.

“Just fucking leave me alone”
My motto for all day, every day!
Wow! I see why people rave about her books. I know it‘s a good story when I‘m torn between wanting characters to have a happy ending and wanting them to suffer. Not sure I /love/ how it ended but the entire book was a joy to listen to. Will be listening to another one of her books soon!
I really enjoyed this book. I am a big fantasy reader so it was good for a little change in book genre. I loved the setting and all the events. 😃
I listened to the audiobook a few years ago, so this wasn‘t a new story for me. I love Hannah‘s writing. This is a love story see in the beautiful and harsh wilds of Alaska. There is love, heartbreak, community, and domestic abuse.
This book was beautifully tragic. Loved the descriptions, the multifaceted characters, the unmistakable symbolism, and the theme of lonliness and trauma. However, it was such a sad book so be prepared to cry!
Listening on audiobook, book 2 in my #friendreadingchallenge
This was such a beautiful and heartbreaking story that literally brought me to tears. The story highlights the complexity of relationships, PTSD, domestic violence, living of the grid, sacrifice, hope and everlasting love. This book has easily become a favorite.
Whew! How do you review a book in 4 lines that is deeper than an iceberg? A masterful book. Really difficult read…you want to skip the ugly parts, but then that‘s what gives the story it‘s depth and ultimately it‘s powerful restoration.

I chose a back list from 2018. I love the descriptions of the Alaskan wilderness. It's a great story, but the domestic violence is hard to read about.
This was a tough book, but it was a good book!!! The story was one that needed to be told. I rated this book a 4 out of 5 stars!!!

Thanks for the tag, @Eggs !
1. The Nickel Boys
2. No, but I am subscribed to an audiobook service (Libro.fm).
3. Tagged. It‘s set during winter in Alaska.
Oooof, this one hit my in the gut. I cried more times than I could count. Happy tears, sad tears, frustrated tears, complicated tears... all of the tears! Hannah has an amazing capacity for cresting characters with so much depth and range of emotion. I have been in love with Alaska for a long time. This book reminded me why it is on my bucket list.
I have an endless amount of books and audiobooks on my TBR but I‘m rereading one of my favourites for at least the tenth time #typical

Why do I get the feeling this isn't going to be a 'and they all lived happily ever after' book? Heading into the final third.
Also pictured, my 14-year-old, well worn Salty Dawg saloon hoodie. This pub features in the book.
And thanks to @squirrelbrain for giving me this book.
I feel this would make a good TV series. Can‘t recall a TV show ever being filmed in Alaska.

Books are the mile markers of my life .. she wrote .. and I felt the same .. Hiding into books when life seems too much to handle .. and searching books for advice given without judging .. my sanity amongst my chaos .. my companion in solitude .. my guide when I am lost .. I wander so much through books but I am never lost !
A very interesting book which explores the landscape of the wilderness of Alaska along with a plot of young love and domestic violence. The descriptions of Alaska alone are worth reading.
Here's my updated #bookspin I just finished The Great Alone and I cannot express how wonderful the book was! I had so many emotions reading it, and the last 150 pages were so tragic that it was hard to read, but well worth it.
