I gave this a pick because if you‘re into dystopia/sci-fi you‘ll be glad you read it. It‘s a bit of a mind f$!k and part of me is still not sure what I read. Fascinating ideas though and Vandermeer‘s writing is a treat. Not sure if I‘ll read the whole series though.

🎧 It‘s short, narrator was passable, it‘s interesting & I‘ll definitely get book 2 just to see where the heck it‘s going. There was no payoff ... maybe it‘s in book 2. Area X takes up half the continent & has been cut off from civilization for decades. A husband comes back from Area X ... changed. Wife decides to join expedition 12 to see if she can determine what happened to him & what‘s going on there. I better eventually find out! 😝 ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

To be honest this was a bit of a mind trip but one that once I started really reading found to have a lot of the sci-fi elements that captivated me into the genre.

Still not sure what I read as the book did so many twists and turns into the last quarter of the book but that‘s part of the magic as I‘m going to keep thinking about it until I can read the next book.

Cathythoughts I loved this whole trio 👍🏻❤️ 1mo

This book had a great premise but it fell flat for me by the end. I was captivated by it in the beginning, but as I continued to read I just lost interest and I had a really hard time picturing the ending, which was frustrating. I don't know that I will read the rest of the series. ⭐⭐⭐/5

I enjoyed this short book and will most likely finish the trilogy at sime point. I don't think it will be immediately. This story had a very Lovecraftian feel and definitely fits the name of its genre, "new weird". If you don't like vague descriptions and need all your questions answered this is not for you. If you enjoy pondering and wondering after a story and using your imagination to fill in details, give it a shot.

I read the first book of the Southern Reach Trilogy, somehow did not continue. I remember the only surviving member of the expedition found her way to a #lighthouse towards the end of the book. It tells of a team of female scientists who enter a mysterious Area X, a place that is no longer inhabited by humans. Most who enter never leave, and those on the outside want to know why. This was a quietly terrifying read, and I heard the movie is good.

On the one hand this perplexing story is wonderful and packed with detailed imagery that brings the world to light, but on the other I'm not entirely sure I understand what happened. I want to rate it higher because I enjoyed the story, but I simply cant bring myself to do it when I had (and still have) no idea what was going on for 80% of this book! 🤪
Continued in the comments ⬇️

TCLinrow The ending seemed to sum it up nicely, but I haven't the faintest idea what it summed up! I know it wasn't supposed to be easy to follow, and I know that the concept was of something unexplained and unexplainable, but there are other books that have done this better.

Still worth reading, but not a favourite.
6mo
Cathythoughts I‘m not sure I know what happened either ! But I know I loved it - absolutely 6mo
wanderinglynn I agree with your review. I thought there wasn‘t enough reality to grasp onto in order to put the narrator‘s POV in perspective. Was her POV even remotely accurate? Who knows? 6mo
suzisteffen Whoops, I had a bunch of spoilers in here because I couldn‘t remember which book in the trilogy this was! IN SHORT, the third book answers so many questions from books one and two, but it‘s hard to keep going and be patient (still, not enough of my questions got answered - might need to reread). 6mo

The #readingrush day 4 photo challenge is current read with your pet. Dexter wasn‘t too happy about being a prop, but promises of treats & a car ride got him to cooperate. 😉

As for the book, well, I finished it. That‘s about the best I can say. The back cover has a Stephen King quote: “creepy and fascinating.” Did we read the same book? Because I thought it was rather boring and bland. Oh well. On to the next book!

Books: 6
Pages: 135/1475

OnlyYoo I also found it to be rather boring. But what I did find to be interesting was how extremely unreliable the narrator is. You can‘t assume that anything she thinks from outside of area X is real since her memory has been compromised. And then once she‘s in area X she inhaled spores making anything she says once there also unreliable. Idk I thought it was a cool thought 6mo

So the premise for this story was very cool but I'm going to have to agree with some other reviewers that this one sadly just didn't meet its potential. A group of women is hypnotized and dropped off into what is known as Area X for an exploration expedition in a slightly charted area that's been closed off from the rest of the world due to some unknown/undisclosed event leaving the area void of humans and in pristine condition. 👇

Mynameisacolour Strange things happen but are described vaguely and the climax left me feeling pretty confused and wanting answers. This is the beginning of a trilogy and since they are short I will probably read the second one in hopes of finding some clarification. Side note it has gorgeous end pages! 💚 🌟🌟🌟#BBRC #Bookswap 6mo
shanaqui Clarification there is not, just FYI! The third book... Explains *some* things, but mostly the weirdness stays weird. 6mo

Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer is an unsettling story about a group of women that are sent into “Area X.” The reason why they are there is unclear. They know that there are dangers. They know they may not survive. And yet, they enter the area with a sense of excitement and fascination, ready to see what happens next.

I had been avoiding this because I don‘t do scary, but then it was a pick for one of my book clubs and it‘s so short I thought I‘d try it.
The first 2/3 there‘s a mounting dread and suspense that was really working for me. Then things got really weird and I just wasn‘t worried for her anymore and I didn‘t care as much what was happening.

I actually really enjoyed it! ? The Litsy reviews are lukewarm, but the narration was both distant and personal. While I have no interest in thriller books, I felt like I kept wanting to guess the bigger picture, and uncover the next mystery of Area X. It spoke to self-purpose and love without directly addressing either. For others who enjoyed it I‘d suggest reading China Miéville or Chuck Palahniuk. ? for weird writing styles. (? T. Hanuka)

I read about 5 hours yesterday and finished Annihilation. I'm not a big fan of this book. Yes, it was creepy and this made it interesting, but it all stayed so far away. I didn't care about the characters. Everything was so unpersonal. Maybe it was supposed to be like this but for me it made reading it a bit boring. I'm curious about the Netflix movie now!
