Did you like the book overall? Why or why not?

Does the closing of the novel ruin it for you? We‘ve touched on this before, but I‘ll ask it again in light of this ending: how do you respond to or handle problematic content such as this in older books?

BarbaraJean I was so mad at the last few paragraphs because I'd enjoyed the rest of the book so much. I decided that I'm going to pretend the novel closes on the line “Really the pea soup was sublime.“ In some cases, content like this is so pervasive I'm ready to pitch the whole thing (i.e. Tannis of the Flats). But here, it could be lifted right out without affecting the rest of the book, so I don't have a problem with overlooking (but not excusing) it. 2y

TheAromaofBooks I feel the exact same way. The whole story with the Sams was always one of my least-favorite threads in the book anyway, and then the closing paragraphs just... what even. I actually felt like there wasn't a whole lot of problematic stuff in the rest of the book, which made that ending all the more jarring.

Overall, I enjoyed this book more on this reread than I did when I was younger. I connected more to some of the lost hopes and missed ⬇ 2y

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) dreams - not that my life has been a waste or anything, but when you get to your middle-aged years you start to realize that you just don't have time to do all the things you dreamed about doing, and not all relationships are going to work the way you think they are, so I felt that more now than I did back when I was 20. This won't ever be my favorite Montgomery, but I do like it. 2y

BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks It really did feel like the ending came out of nowhere, so it really pulled me out of the narrative. Like you said, it was even more jarring because of how unexpected it was. Not like I was expecting the Sams to be “woke“ but... yeah. And I'm with you, I connected a lot to those missed opportunity/unfulfilled dream storylines as well, and appreciated that LMM kind of advocated accepting what was lost and moving forward. 2y

AnneCecilie I liked it, but it‘s not even close to being a favourite of Montgomery‘s books. The end came a little sudden, but it‘s not the first time she has done that, it‘s almost as if she gets tired of writing the story and just ends it. 2y

quietjenn That ending line is just so jarring! It did sort of ruin things the first time I read this book. This time around, I'm a little more sanguine about it since it really doesn't fit with everything else (the way the prejudice dominates in Tanis), so I can more conveniently just pretend that it ends a wee bit earlier. 2y

One of the common threads I saw between several storylines was the contrast between dreams & reality: it‘s revealed that what characters longed for is quite different than they‘d made it out to be.

Did you find this theme relatable? Were these realizations and reversals believable or did they feel contrived?

BarbaraJean I found this super relatable (which is why the theme stood out to me!). Joscelyn's fixation on Frank is basically every crush I ever had as a teenager. Except for the extremity of leaving Hugh on their wedding night... 😂 The length of her devotion to Frank felt too extreme, but her realization & reversal was perfect. With Gay, it took WAY too long for her to let go of Noel, and when she finally does have her realization it felt too convenient. 2y

TheAromaofBooks I did think that the tendency to romanticize people/situations is pretty relatable. Margaret also did it with her house (although hers turned out to be true). Peter and Donna both did it with each other, had the blow up, and then came back together with a more realistic view of each other. I think Gay's realization about Noel was convenient, but I also think that she needed the jolt to make her realize that she had actually been over him for ⬇ 2y

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) quite a while already - but admitting that also meant admitting that the entire clan was right and she was wrong, and I think subconsciously that made her hang onto Noel longer in her heart. 2y

BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks I love your point that the romanticizing -> blowup brought Peter & Donna into reality, and even strengthened their relationship in the end. Honestly, by the end theirs was one of the more realistic, honest relationships I've seen in LMM's fiction! And YES about Gay--one of the things I found so relatable was her reluctance/pride over admitting to others/herself that she was wrong about Noel & her feelings had changed toward Roger. 2y

TheAromaofBooks I honestly felt for Gay quite a bit. I have a large, somewhat loud family that absolutely loves being up in one another's business (sometimes good sometimes bad haha) and I've gotten much better at accepting advice as I've gotten older, but when I was younger, having to admit that the family was right about something big and I was wrong... gah! Worst thing ever! 😂 2y

quietjenn I think that this is a theme that is always relatable, because it's such a real facet of existence! And I so agree with your (@BarbaraJean) take on Joscelyn and Frank. Both a crush and cold feet are relatable, but letting that lead you to leaving your husband and being devoted to a dude you saw once in your life for literally years was just taking things too far! 2y

Which characters grow and change the most over the course of the book?

Do you think those changes were inevitable, or are they due to the “competition” over the jug?

TheAromaofBooks I think Gay was one of the characters who grew the most, and hers was definitely due indirectly to the jug because that is what kept Nan in town. I think Gay would have learned what Noel really was and would have grown into the more mature and thoughtful person she became even without the jug, but thankfully this speeded up the process and let her out of what would have been a pretty depressing marriage! 2y

AnneCecilie I totally agree with @TheAromaofBooks. I‘m happy for Gay that she found of what Noel was like before it was too late. But at the same time Gay is the youngest of the main characters and 18 yr olds change more than almost 30 yr olds and older folks. 2y

quietjenn I'll vote for Margaret, since it was Aunt Becky's legacy to her that allowed her to stand up for herself, acknowledge and get the thing that she's always wanted, and find happiness. And that was only possible with money. 2y

BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks Yes, I think Gay would have gone through similar changes, but it may have taken longer and been more painful. The wisdom of her mother to insist on a year's engagement, which coincided with Nan's visit because of the jug, really does save her from a bad marriage. So good job Nan, in the end! I would've liked to see how things played out for Nan later on, if Gay's response to her prompted any eventual growth in maturity for her. 2y

BarbaraJean @AnneCecilie Great point that Gay's more likely to change than the older members of the clan who are set in their ways! For Joscelyn & Donna, it costs them more to change--or it takes more to prompt change since they've set expected patterns & behaviors within the clan. @quietjenn Yes, Margaret for sure! Hers was more of an external change--it's frustrating that her simple desire for a home & family is unreachable until she has money. 2y

TheAromaofBooks I've actually always wondered this, and wondered who was actually supposed to get the jug. I'm honestly inclined to think she was just screwing with everybody one last time, but maybe she did hope that it would shake some people up!! 2y

BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks Oh, it kills me that we never find out who was supposed to get the jug! I think it's very fitting that the clan never finds out, but I still want to know! And I agree, I think she was just messing with the family--getting in her final digs at everyone. But how it pans out with the jug feels like the rest of her will: a lot of people are just annoyed and don't/can't change, but some people change in exactly the ways they needed. 2y

AnneCecilie I think she was just having fun with the family for the last time just because she could. For the people who got what they wanted, the jug doesn‘t matter. 2y

quietjenn I think she was stirring the pot and having a little fun, but would also have been pleased if it caused some of the clan to do some changing and growing. 2y

BarbaraJean I'm so torn over how I feel about Aunt Becky. She knew just what everyone's most sensitive/shameful/embarrassing moments were, and gloried in using that to publicly goad & shame people. She loved having the power of being able to decide who got the jug, and that bothered me, too. But that obituary was HILARIOUS, and her chat with Joscelyn left me feeling much more positive--I think there was more to her we didn't really get to explore. 2y

TheAromaofBooks I do think that she had good qualities as well. When she talked about her daughter who had died and how much she loved her - well, I think we were seeing the Aunt Becky who was kind of done with life and had nothing to lose by stressing everyone else out lol I would definitely read a prequel focused on her earlier life!! 2y

BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks I think you're absolutely right, she was just ready to go and stirring things up on the way out to amuse herself! I did love how she managed to give basically everyone the exact things they didn't want. 😂 And yet in a few cases, with the family members who aren't petty and grasping, she bestows exactly what is needed. I love that she gives Ambrosine the diamond ring. 2y

TheAromaofBooks I actually love the way Ambrosine gets the ring and loves it, how it just fulfills this perfect dream for her. Later in the story when she's wearing it to church and some of the clan are still grumbling about it and she's still just completely thrilled - love it! 2y

AnneCecilie I didn‘t think much about her and I‘m not sure what to think. I‘m just glad that she‘s not in my life because I wouldn‘t want to have her as I family member. 2y

quietjenn She's very much all of the above, but I err on the side of finding her very interesting and amusing. I did love that obituary and her scene with Joscelyn. 2y

BarbaraJean I was completely overwhelmed by everyone at Aunt Becky's “levee.“ I actually went back through that chapter and typed up notes on all the characters mentioned! Once LMM focused in on a smaller set of characters, I found it manageable. I was really impressed by how deftly she sketched out and developed so many characters. 2y

BarbaraJean I loved the Brian Dark/Margaret storyline--such a sweet resolution. I loved that Margaret didn't have to have a marriage to realize her dreams. And I loved Hugh & Joscelyn. I wanted to shake her several times, but I could also relate a little! I definitely saw my younger self in that tendency to fall for and romanticize someone you barely know. And I'd read a whole book about Drowned John, or Aunt Becky when she was young! (edited) 2y

TheAromaofBooks Even though it had been a long time since I read this one, the characters and their stories really came back to me as I was reading, so I didn't find them too confusing. I'm with you, I really love Margaret's story - I also thought it was funny that the guy she was going to marry also realized he didn't want marriage, either! I was so glad when Brian ended up in a good place - I hate the part where Cricket dies! 2y

BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks I was INFURIATED over Cricket!! And with Brian's aunt & uncle in general. So awful. And yes, it was hilarious when both Margaret and Penny are SO relieved to have the engagement broken off! 2y

TheAromaofBooks I think that the scene with Cricket, the whole Sams and the statue thing, and the fact that you never actually find out who was supposed to get the jug are the reasons that I had somewhat negative vibes from past readings of this book. I had kind of forgotten how there were actually a bunch of characters and storylines that I really enjoyed and also found humorous, so it was fun to touch on those again. 2y

AnneCecilie I‘m with you here, I was confused at Aunt Becky‘s levee. But maybe that‘s the point, because son is all the characters? When it was narrowed down, it was easier to follow the stories. I loved the Brian/ Margaret and how they both got what they wanted in the end. 2y

quietjenn it was definitely overwhelming at the start! I found I gravitated to reading the Kindle version, so I could easily search for character names to remind me who was who. I agree that the Brian/Margaret storyline was a winner. I found many of the characters pretty interesting, even when I didn't like them. I'd totally read a story about the Aunt Becky and some of the older characters when they were younger. 2y

quietjenn I'd also read one about/from Nan's perspective. In both my initial reading of this and in this one, I feel like she's cast as “the vamp“ and villainized and being a little irked by that, so her novel could be a lot fun. For the “romances,“ I really liked Peter and Donna's. (edited) 2y

BarbaraJean @quietjenn I had this checked out on hoopla and I definitely used the search feature for character names! The clan makes so many judgments about Nan, but I wasn't bothered by it since it seemed confirmed by her actions over the course of the story (her history of awfulness toward Gay and then her blatant fiance-stealing!). It would be interesting to hear her side of it, though, to see her fleshed out into less of a one-note character. 2y

TheAromaofBooks Looking forward to chatting about Tangled Web. I've never read the Pat books. Like Emily, Mom told me they were “too depressing“ back when I was first into Montgomery and I've never picked them up 😂 But I think I'm ready to give them a go!! 2y

And Julie, I hope you enjoy Tangled Web...for me, it felt very different to Montgomery's other books, even though it has a lot of her familiar tropes. But I did really enjoy it. @TheAromaofBooks I remember you saying that about the Pat books! 😂 I don't think they're any more depressing than the Emily books at their bleakest. This month's #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead was one I hadn't read in probably 15-20yrs. It wasn't one of my favorites growing up, but I enjoyed it a lot more as an adult - I found myself relating to some of the storylines that bored me when I was 20. There are a lot of characters here, and I still enjoyed some stories more than others, but overall this is one I liked. It's interesting to see some of Montgomery's personal tropes assimilated into this⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) one, like the Pilgrim's Progress edition, a “Big“ and “Little“ name whose sizes don't actually match the nicknames, and even cats named First and Second Peter. The story with the Sams was always my least favorite anyway, and it still makes me sad that that's how the whole book ends, as that random bit of racism on the last page does leave a slightly sour taste for a book that actually is old-fashioned but not overly so for the most part.⬇ 2y

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) This edition is a very old library discard that I absolutely love. I'm not sure when they stopped printing library editions of books like this, but I miss them.

This was a little different from the other Montgomery books I‘ve read so far. Firstly, we follow several people in the Dark and Penhallow clan. Secondly, I‘m a little surprised this is seen as a children‘s book (I‘ve heard that only The Blue Castle is seen an adult book). None of the people we follow are children, they youngest is 18, most seem to be in their 30s and it‘s about who will inherit the family heirloom, the jug.

AnneCecilie I never cared about heritage when I was a kid. That doesn‘t mean that I didn‘t enjoy this. The characters and their descriptions are all Montgomery. And off course the chase for the jug have some unexpected consequences for several people in the clan. #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead @Barbara It says that is was published in #1931 #192025 @Librarybelle 2y

Our #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead for July will be A Tangled Web (apparently it was titled “Aunt Becky Began It” in the UK!). Read at your own pace throughout the month and I‘d love to hear your thoughts as we go.

TheAromaofBooks I didn't know about the alternate title! How funny. Have you read this one before? It's another one that I haven't read for years. But the “tangled web“ aspect is definitely true - this one has quite the character list!!! 2y

BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks I was searching for cover images to use, and one of “Aunt Becky Began It” popped up—had to look that up! I haven‘t read this one before—sounds like I‘ll need to jot down a character list to refer to as I go! 2y

TheAromaofBooks If I remember correctly, instead of having a distinct main character, this story follows several members of the “clan“ as they deal with Aunt Becky's sassy will after she dies 😂 2y

Daisey I still haven‘t been able to fit in Magic for Marigold and don‘t have my copy of this available currently, but I remember loving it and really hope to make time for it this month. 2y
