This is right up there with Ellen Hopkins‘ trilogy as far as making the opioid epidemic, particularly among teenagers, so very, very real. I can‘t look away, but my God, it‘s so scary, and so sad. 😭 #heroine #mindymcginnis #druguse #opioidepidemic #triggerwarnings

Some late night reading. Started this one about a week ago and though reading is slow going for me lately, I‘m intrigued to see where the story goes and how the writing conveys certain elements of it.

This one is shaping up to be a miss for me from McGinnis‘s catalog 🫤 I‘m questioning my reading palate too since this seems to be in everyone‘s top 2 fav McGinnis books. Maybe FOTS set my expectations WAY too high or my mood reader senses are not in the mood. That‘s why I‘m setting it aside. IDK, but I just can‘t help but feel “meh” about almost everything in this book. I find Mickey‘s reasoning behind her addiction way too weak. 😭

This book was one of the most difficult to get through because it is just so real.McGinnis doesn‘t shy away from the ugliest parts of addiction, and she doesn‘t try to offer any pat explanations for why it happens to some people and not others. With the current scourge of fentanyl that is killing people every day, an unflinching depiction of addiction like this one seems all the more timely.I highly recommend this, if you‘re in the right headspace.

Here are the pup pics you guys requested 🥰 Meet Juana!

I‘m not enjoying this one as much as Be Not Far From Me and Female of the Species (I‘m sorry 😭) but I‘m still enjoying it a lot. The pacing is a little slow compared to the rest of her books I‘ve read and so far Mickey is my least favorite McGinnis MC.
That being said, it‘s McGinnis, so it‘s still an awesome book nonetheless. It gets darker and sadder the more I get into it so I might eat my words.

So far I‘ve learned that McGinnis = emotional destruction so I‘m ready for it today. My mood reader senses have been craving a lot of depressing stuff for no reason (also I wanna marathon all of McGinnis‘s books because she‘s starting to become one of my favorite female authors). How many tissues do I need for this one? Female of the Species almost made me run out.
This is one of the best young adult books I have ever read. If it doesn't make you aware of signs and symptoms of addictions and withdrawals, then read it again. I would recommend this to parents. It definitely opens your eyes to just how easily it takes a person to develop a habit and of course, the opioid epidemic!
This is a good book so far. I highly recommend it. It is a good eye-opener into the opioid crisis and how easy it is to form a drug dependency and habit.

This book starts just before the spring softball season for two best friends and stars of their high school team. They are in a horrible car accident, and face the struggles their injuries cause in their senior year and dreams for the coming years of college.

Listened to this on audio and could not stop! Excellent book. First Mindy McGinnis and will not be the last. 5⭐️

Well this was intense! A powerful YA that delves into the opioid epidemic and how quickly things can spiral. My first Mindy McGinnis but I'll definitely be reading more!

I still have a few pages to go but I'm really liking this YA book about a high school athlete that is involved in a terrible car crash and sustains an injury that can end her softball career. To cope with the pain of her injury and to hurry along the healing process she becomes addicted to Oxy.

This book gave me all the feels!!! I expected a cautionary YA tale. Instead, I found an intense, suspenseful story that grabbed my heart in an iron fist, milking it of tears and leaving me both broken hearted and elated. Totally more than I bargained for - I can't wait to read more by magician/author Mindy McGinnis!!!

It'd be...like super cool if I could read A book by Mindy McGinnis that doesn't make me cry or hate someone. The book is incredibly important. Actually pretty amazingly ironic that someone on my FB posted a “Why is my EpiPen so expensive yet druggies get free Narcan“ post the afternoon I was reading this. It's because of greedy pharma companies KAREN!
Anyways, read this book.

Mindy McGinnis just likes to hurt people with good books.

Alright! I'm ready to get hurt!

Shockingly good, heartbreaking, and incredibly important. I‘m from Ohio and Indiana—I‘ve lived near areas ravaged by opioid addiction. This book is so important to read right now—to remember that addiction is nuanced and never simple. McGinnis tells this story excellently. @FantasyChick another STUPENDOUS #newyearwhodis pick.

I finished this gem last night. It tells the story of so many who fall into addiction through legitimately prescribed pain killers. It hides nothing and shows how addiction crosses all socio-economic boundaries. It is a riveting and cautionary tale.

I'm 150 pages in, enjoying reading in our hotel room while hubby naps. Going out for Mexican food when he wakes up.

My husband surprised me with this awesome book light. I'm using it tonight as I start reading Heroine.

Great novel that gives the reader a first person perspective of how slippery of a slope addiction can be. What we can‘t answer is why it happens to some and not others under seemingly similar circumstances. I‘m afraid I may have seen a cryptic Facebook post from an old friend that he may have lost his little brother to this disease yesterday. His other brother gone earlier this year. Unfathomable how I am seeing addiction claim lives this year.

Noticing the dualities in life... two sides of the same coin.. of the half-eaten Sponge Bob ice cream? Who we are with different people, and how much we each let others see of ourselves. Reminds me a bit of college philosophy: What is true self? How is what we portray to others not our true self?

After some research, I chose this book because it looked to be an interesting story about recovery from an accident.
This story was about a girl named Micky, who is recovering from a car accident. She goes about healing in a very unconventional way and it gets her in some trouble. Eventually the truth comes out, and Mickey has to deal with the reality of her situation.

Thanks, once again, for the well wishes! The mri was fine. I purposefully haven‘t looked at the results. The dr should call Monday with plans.

This book doesn‘t deserve a bright or colourful picture. Because it‘s so dark and terrifying you can barely stand reading it without crying. It‘s not the light summer read I‘m going to recommend to everyone. But it‘s a must-read book. I couldn‘t stop thinking about it a whole week after I finished it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5!! Wow!! This book was so intoxicating! It was one of those books I couldn‘t put down and when I did I was thinking about it and eager to get back to it. HIGHLY recommend. ⚠️: it does deal with addiction.

This book was heavy and hard to read. I think one of the reasons I finished it in two days is because I wanted to stop feeling so sad for where the story was going. The first line of the books tells the reader how bad things are going to get. “When I wake up, all my friends are dead.” In a time when opiates seems to be commonplace, it is important to understand how the addiction can not only ruin your life, but kill as well, and kill fast.

I can't get over this book. Such an in depth, gritty, no holding back look at addiction. I couldn't stop listening to it. Highly recommend.

Mom hack #635: Why buy your kids new furniture when you can get old stuff, paint it and make it new?
Spending my day rearranging bedrooms, upcycling old furniture to make it shiny and new and listening to the tagged #audiobook
Not a bad way to spend a rainy Sunday

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ What didn‘t work: 1) why would a mom (who is a Dr.!) let her teen be in charge of oxy post-op and 2) why is there a theme of “not being rich/can‘t afford college without a softball scholarship” if mom is, indeed a doctor? But, if you can get past that, this is a brutal account of a student athlete getting hooked on opioids and how it spirals out of her control. It‘s really terrifying...and a necessary read. I couldn‘t put it down.

I am one of the very few that thought this was meh. Glossy version of addiction. Go ask Alice or requiem for a dream hits it hard and true. This was “drug addiction light”

This month I am going to try and finish 31 books. I will not necessarily have begun the book this month so it won‘t exactly be a book a day. I will also allow myself to reread. But I need this challenge in order to stop myself from spending so much time on my phone. The first book I completed was Heroine by Mindy McGinnis, had an hour left on my audiobook this morning. 5/5 Stars. #AJreads31books

I read this 400 page book in two days, and even though so much of it made me angry, disgusted, sad, and sick, I needed to know what happened. It did shed light on the opioid crisis and how easy it is for the right person to fall ill to addiction, even if they're a good person and never did drugs before in their lives. However, I struggled to sympathize with the character when it unsurprisingly got her into trouble.

So exhausted after a day of walking the homeschooling show, that I'm making it an early night. Already in my pjs in this luxurious hotel room with an ice cream sundae and my library book.

Book 9 in O.W.L.s readathon prompt was muggle studies=read contemporary book-also discussed in my book club with author interview through Skype. This is how Micky Catalan became drug user/addicted/dependent. Author made a good research in this topic, you can see "criminal thinking errors" process to justify her behavior. Some areas were resolved quickly but author said had the purpose to bring hope. Usually I don't like this topic but it was ok3.4⭐️

This book was absolutely amazing! I listened to it on audible and was having almost constant shivers. The story is about a high school athlete who got into an accident which led her into having an opioid addiction. This book was just so raw and real. It‘s definitely going to be one of my favorite books of this year.

This was between a pick and a so-so. The author did a great job depicting the evil cycle of pain and drugs and addiction, the obsession and compulsion, and the thought process that goes along with that, but she left out a few key components that are crucial to continuing recovery. The book goes into detail about suffering but glosses over the recovery process. As a recovering addict, I believe the process of getting clean matters as much as how⬇

Reading this for @FountainBookstore YA book club. I‘m not normally one for these types of books (I‘m a light and fluffy kind of girl), but it sucked me in pretty fast. I should have no problem finishing by next weekend.

Doing some rainy day reading at work, and I'm just so drawn into this book and so very sorry for anyone struggling with pain- with or without the aid of medicine. The pressures we put on ourselves can be insane.
