“I think it astonishingly good - complete and sharp an individual” Virginia Woolf

I had always loved the movie and I finally read the book and now I‘m re-watching the movie. They‘re both perfect.

A #Persephone novella about a wedding or more specifically the wedding guests. The book sketches the guests in a minimal way and yet they feel like real people. Most of them are not very likable, including the bride herself, but they feel so real. The mother of the bride tries to arrange all as best as she can but there‘s more than meets the eye!

Mixed feelings with this one. I think that for a Novella, only 119 pages, the author describes so well the characters, their conflicts, the family dynamic, the time and Dolly‘s feelings and doubts about the wedding. Everything occurred in one day, before and after the wedding, March 5th, I started it near to this date🤗Sometimes gives irrelevant details. Love this cover😍3⭐️

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! 3y
mabell It‘s so fun when dates in books align with the current calendar 😄 3y
Gissy @mabell I follow a YouTuber (Miranda Mills) that she usually recommends books for each month or season and she likes to read these vintage, classic books. She was who reminded me this book. It was there waiting for me to be read☺️and when she said that the event occurred on March 5th I thought it was the perfect time to read it. 3y

A bonus #PersephonePick as we close out the year, courtesy of my wonderful mom. ❤️ I think I need to re-read this one before I fully make up my mind about it; there is so much detail packed into these 119 short pages that I feel as though just one read only lets you scratch the surface of the various relationships and family dynamics. Does anyone have particularly strong feelings on this one? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Didn‘t realize (even with the title) that I read two dysfunctional wedding books back to back 😂. (One before this was The Guest List). This one however is a little novella first published in 1932. The bride to be is downing rum as she gets ready and her oblivious family flits around the house. Some lovely passages and the entire tone of this book probably was more meaningful back when it was published. Today it feels a bit dated. Almost a pick.

DivineDiana I own this book too. Purchased purely based on that gorgeous cover. #MtTBR 3y

My first Persephone Book. This was first published by Hogarth Press in 1932.

March 5. A daughter is getting married. And we follow along in a few hours before and after the wedding. The preparations, the dialogue and interactions between family and their closest friends.

Julia really has a way with describing people with just a few words or a sentence

I didn‘t see the twist towards the end.

Cathythoughts A twist at the end 🤔... stacked 4y
BarbaraBB Oh that cover! Nothing beats Persephone. I‘ll stack! (edited) 4y

It‘s been a beautiful spring day, sunny with a few wispy clouds, and a chance of rain. I woke up this morning and decided to mix things up, so I worked from a favourite café (sneaking in a few chapters of my current reads in between emails). After work and a few errands, I‘m back home, with paints, brushes and creamy watercolour paper. ??

I'm not at all surprised that this gem was first published by Hogarth Press, it's very Bloomsbury. The seemingly idyllic setting belies the growing tension and unease. While there are several laugh-out-loud conversations there's a dark, complex undertone very reminiscent of To The Lighthouse and Between the Acts, though without Virginia's more modernist features.

My zinnias are definitely the most cheerful part of this review. I found this short book full of chaos, so much so, that I found myself rereading parts to see what I missed. And then, the ending turns sad and dark. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I‘ve read so many good Persephone books so this one left me disappointed. (Between so-so and a pan)

I always love when I can fit in a Persephone or two in my monthly TBR. I finished ‘Cheerful Weather For The Wedding‘ a couple of weeks ago for the #PersephoneReadathon. And finally rewatched the film yesterday evening. I must say, I actually enjoyed both equally. The movie was even better the second time, now that I‘ve read the book. I felt, the film did an excellent job capturing the essence of the book, & the playful & witty style of the author.

A lovely Sunday read for me. I‘m about half way through this novella for the #PersephoneReadathon and absolutely enjoying it! I happened to watch the film adaptation a few years ago, and I can already tell the book is much better. Although, I‘ll have to rewatch once I‘ve finished, since it‘s been a while. Have you read this or seen the film?

A really lovely Sunday afternoon read under 200 pages from a member of the Bloomsbury group with some turns I didn't see coming. Basically Dolly is getting married and this novella follows her thoughts and progress drinking rum on the afternoon of her wedding.
