LOVED this and blew through it in just a few days!
The main character is definitely my kind of funny. I found myself chuckling every regularly throughout as well as being terrified, what a combo! This definitely made my nightly breastfeeding trips to the nursery creepy. Try not looking in the small closet that leads to the attic and has no door and not think of your current horror novel. I challenge you.

This is a downright disturbing and deliciously atmospheric work of folkhorror, from hoarder‘s house to haunted woods, narrated with unexpected humor by a woman who just wants to keep her dumb dog safe. What I didn‘t know until the very end is that this book is inspired by a 1904 classic horror short story by Arthur Machen, and while you can definitely enjoy this book without knowing the story, I felt like I was missing something once I knew!

This book ended up being a lot better than I thought it would. It pulls you in and you just have to read the next page to find out what‘s gonna happen. When Melissa goes to clean her deceased grandmas house she‘s expecting a quick in and our type of job. Turns out grandma is a hoarder, the deceased step grandpa was into supernatural things, and Melissa has to figure it all out. It‘s much better than I‘m describing it. Not very good at these.

This horror rural horror novel was a good mix of creepy and snarky. The effigies were creative and genuinely scary and the main character had just the right amount of sarcasm. The goofy, sweet hound took center stage and was my favorite part.

Melissa AKA Mouse, along with her beloved dog Bongo, returns to her thoroughly unpleasant grandmother's house after her passing to clean it out for sale. Her grandmother spent the last few years of her life in a nursing home & Mouse is warned by her own elderly father that the house might be a bit overwhelming. She finds that her grandmother was secretly hoarding & as she is cleaning she discovers a strange manuscript kept by her husband. The👇

vivastory excerpts of the manuscript is the one element of the book that didn't work well for me. The narrative flow between the different voices felt a bit off during the section that Mouse is reading the manuscript. However, Mouse is a funny & sarcastic character & the book itself has a few chilling moments. It is also a bit hard to classify. I'd call it folkloric horror, but it contains a few dark fantasy elements. This is my first Kingfisher, which I 2y

Completely forgot I haven‘t finished this! My #10thBookOf2021 for #October was this twisted horror perfect for the Halloween season. Set in America‘s south, it‘s a atmospheric thriller about being alone in a hoarders house under siege by something not human. Mouse promised her Dad she‘d clear her mean deceased gran‘s house, no one told her it was full of creepy junk & not to go into the woods alone. Made me check the windows😱 #12BooksOf2021

Mouse is cleaning out her grandma's house (with her dog) and every night there is a tap, tap, tap on the windows. She stumbles upon her step grandpa's journal and must decide if it's just the writings of an old man who is losing his mind or something more sinister. It's definitely the second one.

This one's a little too bizarre to be scary to me, and the ending isn't to my liking (too frenetic combined with too much explanation). Also, the North Carolina setting doesn't feel much like North Carolina to me, which I find disappointing. (It doesn't NOT feel like NC, it just doesn't feel like much of anywhere.) I quite enjoyed about the first 2/3, though, so there's that.

ImperfectCJ Question: A barista in the book gives the MC a "warm-up" for her latte as she leaves the cafe. I've never heard of a warm-up for an espresso drink, but I'm no expert on coffee bars. How would this work? Would the barista just add some hot drip coffee or some steamed milk, or would she have to make another espresso to add to the latte? 3y

Interesting book. I enjoyed the “things in the woods” trope, and I love dogs. Always appreciate a dog. And the inclusion of the diary from The White People by Arthur Machen was fun, though…kind of weird. The story didn‘t take me where I thought it would go, but I liked the humor throughout and the few parts that were actually spooky.

I loved this!! It‘s told in first person, and the voice is so authentic and engaging. The humor is natural and easy—I even laughed out loud a few times! I thought the pacing was great, and the monsters were creepy as hell! Anyway, I loved the feeling of being in this adventure with people I really liked—I felt really invested. If you‘re looking for a creepy story with extremely likable characters and the best coonhound EVER, look no further! 😁

FelinesAndFelonies I liked this one but I loved The Hollow Places. I would really recommend reading it if you haven't. 3y

I read The Hollow Places prior to reading the tagged book and I loved it. I expected this book to be similar to that. It is not. While I wouldn't say I'm disappointed, I'm definitely underwhelmed. I expected something atmospherically creepy, instead I got something less. The story is okay the MC Mouse is weird. Bongo and Foxy were the most enjoyable characters. The storyline is slow. I didn't not like it; I think my expectations were too high.

This book started out well. It was spooky and I was thinking it was a good ghost story or haunted house but by the middle it lost steam. It was me reading about a woman who was reading a very long manuscript 🤦🏾‍♀️. It went along at a snails pace and I ended up skipping most of the middle. A sneaky tactic pulled me back in and..now it turned into a Lovecraftian story? This book was all over the place and not scary-more of a fantasy than horror.

12-15-20: My 107th finished book of 2020! This one was very weird. Mouse and her dog, Bongo, travel to North Carolina, to empty out her deceased grandmother‘s home. Not only are they met with a hoarding situation, there is something going on in the woods...It‘s horror but the narrator is funny which saved this one for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #thetwistedones #tkingfisher 👍🏼📖#️⃣1️⃣0️⃣7️⃣

This folk horror novel unnerved me to the point where I lay awake at night, unable to get some of the visuals out of my mind. This book's effect on me is remarkable because it is almost gore-less. The fear for me lay in the palatable sense of impending threat, the mystery, and the atmosphere. I also cared deeply about the characters. Tough, smart women who take care of themselves and a dog whom we know from the beginning makes it out alive!! YAY!

Another impressive #scarathalon read! For my tastes, this was the perfect horror book up until the last 100 pages--folky and atmospheric with slow, gradual reveals that keep things mysterious until necessary. I wasn't a fan of the conclusion, but still worthy of a strong pick since I'm so picky with this genre! #thrilloween #gothtober @Clwojick

I stopped reading this last night, I don't stop reading a novel lightly. This just wasn't for me. The characters were poorly developed and the lead character Mouse was unrelatable and unlikeable. The overall writing was poor as well and it just didn't flow properly. Didn't find it overly creepy either, it was more strange than scary

This standalone horror novel from T Kingfisher (aka Ursula Vernon) is a slow burn that steadily racks up tension and mystery over what is out in the woods. Mouse‘s great conversational narration, which editorialises what‘s happening and her attempts to rationalise it, enhances the creepiness but the final quarter is quite rushed and anti-climactical and I wanted more Foxy who is a great sidekick with a smart mouth and a pragmatic attitude.
