Before I Fall
Before I Fall | Lauren Oliver
With this stunning debut novel, New York Times bestselling author Lauren Oliver emerged as one of today's foremost authors of young adult fiction. Like Jay Asher's Thirteen Reasons Why and Gayle Forman's If I Stay, Before I Fall raises thought-provoking questions about love, death, and how one person's life can affect so many others. For popular high school senior Samantha Kingston, February 12"Cupid Day"should be one big party, a day of valentines and roses and the privileges that come with being at the top of the social pyramid. And it isuntil she dies in a terrible accident that night. However, she still wakes up the next morning. In fact, Sam lives the last day of her life seven times, until she realizes that by making even the slightest changes, she may hold more power than she ever imagined.Named to numerous state reading lists, this novel was also recognized as a Best Book of the Year by Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, The Daily Beast, NPR, and Publishers Weekly. It has been optioned for film by Fox 2000 Pictures. Supports the Common Core State Standards.

The idea of this book has been used over and over again, yet somehow the author managed to recreate the idea and fit it into something completely natural, that the book feels oddly supernatural. Once again a meaningful book that definitely gave me a new perspective of life. The character development is unbelievable, and the movie even does justice to the book so I would reccomend that as well.

I normally do not read YA (read this for a reading challenge). This one was rather thought-provoking, however. A popular high-school senior is on her way home from a party when she dies in a car accident. But then she wakes up again the next day…and the next, for an entire week. Each day she has an opportunity to see how her actions affect the lives of others around her. It‘s kind of like the plot of “Groundhog Day,” but for teens.

megzlynn I adored this book. I read it several years ago when I was still in high school and I still think about it. I‘ve read several of Lauren Oliver‘s other books as well and none have disappointed. 11mo

Hated the ending 👎🏽 SPOILER: I can accept death as an ending, but I need it to be hopeful and this one wasn‘t hopeful enough. I needed to know what happened to Sam‘s friends and family and Juliet.

Zelma Not being snarky at all, but you might want to add the spoiler tag to this. 1y

Mean Girls meets Groundhog Day spun this story of a vapid, teenage girl who changes over the course of the book, reliving her last day alive. While there were some beautiful quotes in this, it was way to angsty and too much kissing for my liking. Which is saying something because I love my YA! Only 3 stars from me on this one, sadly.

Also, there were some trigger subjects in this book I wasn't expecting and it caught me off guard.

TaylorMay I completely agree with your review. I read it quickly but was not impressed. I didn't even bother with the movie. 2y
Kaylamburson I had no idea there was a movie @TaylorMay but I definitely wasn‘t a fan either. 2y
TaylorMay Yeah they did one I think last Feb or so? It came out around the time of a few other YA adaptions. It did help when I read something explaining that the different days she lived were her going through the stages of greif. I appreciate what they were attempting but it's always hard when the main character isn't likeable. Which to me she wasn't 2y

I always enjoy Oliver‘s writing, and even though I liked this book, I did find it very repetitive.

On a side note, look how cute this picture is. 😍

bg_reads What a cute photo! I always have a hard time buying books that have a face taking up a lot of the cover. I find it creepy, for some reason! 2y
books.and.fluff @cbwaug I do admit, it is a bit of a creepy cover. But it was $3 so I wasn‘t going to complain. 😂 2y

I really wanted to like this but I found myself slogging through just for the sake of finishing it. In the end, I found the narrator annoying and didn‘t care about any of the characters or what happened to them. My mind was made up to bail when I started listening to the next audiobook in my queue and was much more engaged than I had ever been in this story.

Kaylamburson I felt the same way! 2y

I actually want to rate this 3.5 but that‘s not an option. I think it was a good read and I was involved with the main character. I just didn‘t care for the ending. Maybe it‘s me. I don‘t want to spoil it or anything but it was s good book. It made me think. Every decision you make whether it‘s a good or bad one has consequences. Smiling at a stranger could change that person‘s entire day. We need to be more aware of how we treat people.

When I picked this book up, I was a bit skeptical. How on earth can you make a book interesting when it is just repeating the same things over and over again. I had read a few other Lauren Oliver books, and I enjoyed them, however I wouldn‘t say that they were my favorites. To my surprise, the book had my attention cover-to-cover. The only thing I didn‘t appreciate was that the main character seemed slightly underdeveloped. 4.5/5 stars!

This was an interesting book. A teenage version of groundhog day. The main character made lots of bad choices once she knew there were no consequences but finally learned to change that behavior. Decent book. Read for 2018 SWON TRC.

This book is just so beautifully written. I stumbled upon it on Goodreads and randomly picked it up. It really opened my eyes as to how we randomly label people as freaky or wierd without actually knowing them. And it's all about going back and doing the right thing. I definitely recommend this to anyone who has no clue what they want to read next.

If Mean Girls and Groundhog‘s Day mixed together, then this book would be the product. It was a story I feel like I have heard before, but the way it is done has so many things that make it worthwhile. It wasn‘t what I expected at all and I really enjoyed it!

#seventeen year old Samantha is the protagonist of my novel choice for #novemberbythenumbers. My high school daughter presented this during a book talk in her English class. She enjoyed the book over the film and gave me her copy to add to my mile long TBR.

Drnkpnkprincess I read PANIC and liked Lauren Oliver‘s writing style... it was a quick read (which I like for romcom/YA) so I‘ll have to check this one out! Hope you enjoy it! 2y

#BookToScreen Discussion Question #5

Did you watch the movie? If so, what was your opinion compared to the book?

Read4life I haven't seen the movie. I'm curious if someone who's read the book and watched the movie would recommend seeing it. 2y
MinDea @Read4life I watched the movie and I didn't really like it at all. The movie makes it seem like she is relieving her day over and over and over, way more than 7 days and they changed so much in it. 2y
EllieDottie I felt like I would have been very confused in the movie if I hadn't already read the book! 2y
MinDea @EllieDottie I agree. My boyfriend watched it with me and was confused on some parts. Like in the movie they make a point about the faded line into her room that her mom won't cross but never explain it, I did like that they took out the scene with the teacher though! 2y

#BookToScreen Discussion Question #4

What was your overall opinion if this book? Would you recommend it?

Read4life I enjoyed the book and would recommend it. If someone wants a "happy ending" it's not here. But in the end, Sam is at peace with herself and her choices. 2y
MinDea I thought the book was OK. I really didn't like the first chapter and was worried I would dislike the book, but each chapter did get better for me. I gave it 3 stars overall. I think it is a good book for ya but not my favorite and think there are better books out there to recommend. 2y

#BookToScreen Discussion Question #2

What was your opinion of Sam in Chapter 1 and then in Chapter 7? How did it change (if it changed at all)?

Read4life It did change. I felt like she was less selfish at the end. I also think she was more of an individual part of a group vs blindly following group actions. 2y
MinDea @Read4life I agree. My view on her changed a lot from the beginning to the end. She seemed like a mean girl and didn't have any cares in the world or responsibilities. I think she realized that her actions had consequences, big consequences, that she never realized before or didn't care about. 2y
EllieDottie @Read4life @mindea I also agree. I think I liked the book more as it went along because I liked Sam more 2y

#BookToScreen Discussion Question 1:

Why do you think Sam has to relive her last day 7 times? Was the ultimate goal for her to change the events of the day, to change and be a better/nicer person or do you think the goal was something different?

EllieDottie I think it was more about her changing than anything else, I felt that it was almost a character study 2y
MinDea @EllieDottie I completely agree. I think in order for her to help Juliet she had to see who she was/how she was acting. She probably never realized how terrible she was and how that may have led to Juliet's choices at the end of the day. 2y
