The Accursed
The Accursed | Joyce Carol Oates
A major historical novel from "one of the great artistic forces of our time" (The Nation)an eerie, unforgettable story of possession, power, and loss in early-twentieth-century Princeton, a cultural crossroads of the powerful and the damned Princeton, New Jersey, at the turn of the twentieth century: a tranquil place to raise a family, a genteel town for genteel souls. But something dark and dangerous lurks at the edges of the town, corrupting and infecting its residents. Vampires and ghosts haunt the dreams of the innocent. A powerful curse besets the elite families of Princeton; their daughters begin disappearing. A young bride on the verge of the altar is seduced and abducted by a dangerously compelling mana shape-shifting, vaguely European prince who might just be the devil, and who spreads his curse upon a richly deserving community of white Anglo-Saxon privilege. And in the Pine Barrens that border the town, a lush and terrifying underworld opens up. When the bride's brother sets out against all odds to find her, his path will cross those of Princeton's most formidable people, from Grover Cleveland, fresh out of his second term in the White House and retired to town for a quieter life, to soon-to-be commander in chief Woodrow Wilson, president of the university and a complex individual obsessed to the point of madness with his need to retain power; from the young Socialist idealist Upton Sinclair to his charismatic comrade Jack London, and the most famous writer of the era, Samuel Clemens/Mark Twainall plagued by "accursed" visions. An utterly fresh work from Oates, The Accursed marks new territory for the masterful writer. Narrated with her unmistakable psychological insight, it combines beautifully transporting historical detail with chilling supernatural elements to stunning effect.

Bailedbailed

Bailed after 200 pages. The book desperately needed a better editor, and after reading some Goodreads reviews, helped make up my mind to just forget about this convoluted story that needed condensing and a better ending. Life's too short for bad books.
I'll go ahead and start a reread of Rebecca.

I‘m not sure what I just listened to, lol. It was strange and at times hard to follow. At the end it made sense but until then it was annoying to be honest. It was a unique-ish story being that it was based at Princeton and had fictionalized real people for characters.
I wish it had been better organized and easier to follow.

I‘m breaking in my new autumn mug with a favourite herbal tea, Winter Spice by Twinings. It‘s a comforting blend of apple, chamomile, cinnamon, cardamom and cloves - perfect for a crisp autumn day. I have the last 100 pages of my book to finish before book club tonight, so I‘m trying to sneak in a chapter or two, in between meetings and emails.

I‘m making my way through Joyce Carol Oates, ‘The Accursed‘ for my IRL book club next week. Set during the turn of the twentieth century in Princeton, New Jersey. Strange things begin to happen...vampires, ghosts & a powerful curse befall the residents of a normally genteel town. I‘m also loving the real life characters crossing in & out of this twisted & complex novel: Grover Cleveland, Woodrow Wilson, Jack London & Upton Sinclair, to name a few.

I don't bail on books, unless they are absolutely deplorable. An author had spent valuable time spinning, and researching, their tale, and therefore it deserves a fighting chance. This being said, what I just finished was slow-moving, entirely too verbose, mostly superfluous, and therefore fairly disappointing. There were moments that peaked my interest, and even rare moments of brilliance, but I cannot recommend this book. 3.5/5 😬😕😩🚫🐦

BookishMarginalia That's interesting. For me a 3.5 is still a recommend -- I enjoy the carpet of reviewing styles and criteria! 8y
aa_guer2021 @BookishMarginalia 3.5 is probably high for it, to be honest. There WERE moments of brilliance, and it did hook me in (somehow) to keep reading it, so...mixed feelings. 8y

Perfect fall weather means I've moved my Monday reading party outside. (And also caffeine. I desperately needed more caffeine.) Now sitting at Starbucks with a pumpkin spice latte & a scone. ☀️🎃🍂🍁

Picking this creepy, messed up gothic book that's set in Princeton back up. Reading it along with @BeckyMerilatt but I had to set it down when I was in an awful reading slump at the beginning of the month!

#BooksNBucks

Suzze I am in the house and I'm freezing. Brrrr 🌬🌬 8y
BookishFeminist @Suzze Oh no! I'm in Virginia so it's sunny and 65° today. Makes for a nice fall! Hope it warms up a bit by you. 8y

PNWBookseller85 Also - how is the dreaded reading slump? You ok? Need to talk about it? Are there therapists out there for this specific problem? Cause there should be. 8y
BookishFeminist @BeckyMerilatt Awesome!! Our weather really is perfect today. My reading slump is much better! Not great but I can read now. 😀👍🏼 There really should be therapists for this specific problem. 😂 I am okay though—it's been the election triggering me so I've been unable to concentrate well. But I do have a therapist helping me with that! And the election will be over soon. My vacation this weekend helped a ton! 8y
beaniebankbeth @BookishFeminist Ooh, we need to TALK when you're done with that one. I read it back in the very month it was released & had to speed through it since it was in high demand at the library. I was convinced by the NYT Book Review to read it & I still feel like I'm sorting the whole thing out. Love the New Jersey setting, though. I was still living in Bordentown when it came out, so in hollering distance of many of the settings. 8y
Suzze @BookishFeminist Yeah, no. In the 40's most of the week. 8y
Chachic I love scones! And I keep hoping Starbucks would start serving pumpkin spice latte in Singapore so I could try it. 8y

booksandsympathy It's still in the 90's here. They were saying it was supposed to be in the 70's on Halloween. Don't know if that'll change or not. Last election year it was 100° that day. This election year has triggered a lot of women, myself included. I can't wait for it to be over. 8y

Finished less than 30 minutes before the start of the readathon! This was definitely a labor of love. JCO is overly wordy, which worked in this instance. The Accursed is so creepy and atmospheric, perfect for this time of year. I loved the setting of Princeton and the addition of actual historical figures such as Grover Cleveland, Upton Sinclair, Woodrow Wilson, etc.

aa_guer2021 @Reviewsbylola I just started this (at p. 145) and am having difficulties with the wordy, seemingly tangential narrative style.😩 You rated it as *PICK* so it picks up, and not worth bailing yet? 8y
Reviewsbylola I would say that if you don't like the wordiness now, I would bail. I feel like JCO goes overboard with her inflated writing style in this one and it worked for me (for the most part) but I definitely think it is not something a lot of people would love. @ruskigurl16 8y

Gothic novel + blackberry Cabernet sorbetto = cure for a case of the Mondays. ??

shawnmooney I haven't been able to talk myself out of dismissing JCO out of hand because of her off-the-charts prolificness, if that's a word. My stubborn brain has decided nothing she's written can be any good when she churns out so very very many doorstoppers a year. But I'll keep the inner dialogue going, and maybe one of these times I'll give her a try. :) 8y
BookishFeminist @shawnmooney She's really good, but her work isn't always consistent. There's a reason she's an esteemed professor at Princeton though & as well known as she is. I have some different beef with her about white privilege 😒 but she is an absolute scholar on gothic novels and has an impressive body of work. 8y
BookishFeminist @Tcip 😂😂 Right? Is there some book lottery we can enter?! 8y

One of my favorite #mapsinbooks is in the inside cover of JCO's The Accursed. It's a map of Princeton in 1905, when the book takes place. It's such a beautifully bound book altogether, from a pearly cover, to deckled edges, to pretty maps. I haven't read it yet but plan to soon because gothic vampires in Princeton? Sign me up. 💯💯
