When Will There Be Good News?
When Will There Be Good News? | Kate Atkinson
International Bestseller When Will There Be Good News? is the brilliant new novel from the acclaimed author of Case Histories and One Good Turn, once again featuring private investigator Jackson Brodie. Thirty years ago, six-year-old Joanna witnessed the brutal murders of her mother, brother and sister, before escaping into a field, and running for her life. Now, the man convicted of the crime is being released from prison, meaning Dr. Joanna Hunter has one more reason to dwell on the pain of that day, especially with her own infant son to protect. Sixteen-year-old Reggie, recently orphaned and wise beyond her years, works as a nanny for Joanna Hunter, but has no idea of the womans horrific past. All Reggie knows is that Dr. Hunter cares more about her baby than life itself, and that the two of them make up just the sort of family Reggie wished she had: that unbreakable bond, that safe port in the storm. When Dr. Hunter goes missing, Reggie seems to be the only person who is worried, despite the decidedly shifty business interests of Joannas husband, Neil, and the unknown whereabouts of the newly freed murderer, Andrew Decker. Across town, Detective Chief Inspector Louise Monroe is looking for a missing person of her own, murderer David Needler, whose family lives in terror that he will return to finish the job he started. So its not surprising that she listens to Reggies outrageous thoughts on Dr. Hunters disappearance with only mild attention. But when ex-police officer and Private Investigator, Jackson Brodie arrives on the scene, with connections to Reggie and Joanna Hunter of his own, the details begin to snap into place. And, as Louise knows, once Jackson is involved theres no telling how many criminal threads he will be able to pull together or how many could potentially end up wrapped around his own neck. In an extraordinary virtuoso display, Kate Atkinson has produced one of the most engrossing, masterful, and piercingly insightful novels of this or any year. It is also as hilarious as it is heartbreaking, as Atkinson weaves in and out of the lives of her eccentric, grief-plagued, and often all-too-human cast. Yet out of the excesses of her characters and extreme events that shake their worlds comes a relatively simple message, about being good, loyal, and true. When Will There Be Good News? shows us what it means to survive the past and the present, and to have the strength to just keep on keeping on. From the Hardcover edition.

This book is quite complicated and there were times when I had a hard time trying to remember some of the characters, but the plot was pretty easy to keep track of. I found myself laughing at some of the ridiculous and inevitable coincidences, but there are some very gory and grim scenes that were definitely not funny. The ending is weird, but I think everything turns out OK-ish. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Its so long ago that I read 'one good turn' the 2nd Jackson brodie that I had forgotten how brilliant the plots, characters, and writing was. I loved this 3rd in the series as Jackson finds himself at the periphery of a story in which a historic crime haunts an Edinburgh dr 30 yrs on as well as introducing a wonderful 16 yr old girl reggie. Jackson himself in a near death incident ties everything together. Bk 4 is a must read soon

I nearly didn‘t read this! It‘s the third book in the Brodie series and I thought the first book was just ok, I bailed on the second book but I really enjoyed this one! Full of mystery, great characters (I want to adopt Reggie!!) and lots of action. This was good fun! 👍

JazzFeathers Is it possible to read only this one? Or the first and second are necessary? 4y
Caroline2 @JazzFeathers well, I couldn‘t remember much of what happened in the first book, I didn‘t even finish the second book so I would say yes! There were some parts of the detective‘s back story that I wasn‘t sure of it but it wasn‘t important really. 4y
SamAnne Thanks for this review. Felt the same way about Case Histories (but a big fan of her other books). Will peruse the 2nd book and read this one! 4y

I truly love Kate Atkinson. Her writing style is amazing. It always seems like not much is happening but then she crams in lots of twists and moments that catch your breathe. Away to order the next Jackson Brodie.

I really wanted to like this one since I enjoyed Case Histories. But it never came together for me. Lots of moving parts, not all of which made sense in the end. As for the end...I found it unbelievable, as if she rushed it to try and create cohesion. I did, however, still enjoy Jackson Brodie and his cynicism.

CarolynM I'm sorry you didn't like this one - it's my favourite of the series. 5y

👆THIS is why I love Kate Atkinson so much. She balances light and dark elements in the most affecting way. The third book in the Jackson Brodie series is no exception, it's absolutely brilliant. The above quote is from an interview with Atkinson at the back of my copy.

#TBRtemptation post 5! Excellent cover, isn't it?! This is the third installment in the Jackson Brodie series. On a hot summer day, Joanna's family is heading home along a country lane when her life is changed forever. 30 years later, ex-detective Brodie is on a crowded train when he hears a shocking sound in the night. 16-year-old Reggie is watching tv when a terrifying noise rings through the night. 3 lives cross. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Dragon I really enjoyed this detective series. The books and the tv series- guess who plays the detective ( hint: an actor from the Harry Potter movies) 7y

Catching up on reviews while I catch up on This Is Us...

I ❤️ Reggie Chase! She was the best part of this. I hope she shows up in Book 4.

The writing is great. It's just ... odd. You expect the detective in a detective series to be the main character. But Jackson Brodie is definitely not that in this installment.

It also happens really fast. But that's part of the fun with this one.

True to the title, a lot of tragic events occur in this story. But because Atkinson is so good at her craft, she not only manages to tie up all of the seemingly unrelated events and characters, but she makes you feel like justice was meted out in all the right amounts.

It sounds absurd to say this as a compliment, but: Kate Atkinson's writing makes you feel unsafe in your own home. She makes you feel unsafe in your own neighborhood. This book is so vivid, the characters (both good and bad and in between) so real that I'll never be the same again. In a good way. :)
