quirkyreader For a translation I use many different ones. One I do have a difficult time with is the Passion translation. 2y

Pigpen_Reads What do you mean by study? I have a 3 minute prayer book my grandmother gave me. But, I'm curious about the Bible. It's been on my mind more lately. 2y
mom_of_4 @Pigpen_Reads well I read it and when something sticks out to me i highlight it and write it down. And i write down what the section means in my understanding. I use my study bible which gives more info and my regular bible. They are two different types. One is a NKJ and the other is a NIV. 2y

BookBabe As I mentioned in my previous separate post, I was really floored that Jesus actually prayed for us, His believers, in John 17:20–26. I‘ve read John before, definitely 3.5 years ago when I was first saved, and probably again after that, but it really struck me differently this time. Everything was so much more real and vivid and poignant. I‘m sure some of that has to do with a more mature walk, and might also be partly thanks to the CSB version. 2y
CogsOfEncouragement One of the great encouragements from John is that he records many times Jesus slips away from angry leaders, a crowd wanting to make Him king or those who would kill him. His crucifixion was at His will and at His time.

BookBabe I‘ll go first… I have a lot of thoughts… 😮 🤔 Well, my main takeaway is that Job did an astoundingly good job of not sinning in his distress. This is a man who really has mastered walking in the spirit and not in the flesh. Still praising God even after all the misfortune that has befallen him. 🙌🏻 2y
BookBabe Also, is anyone else thinking that Job is not going to have friends after this? 😬 At first when his friends came and sat to mourn with him for seven days without even speaking a word, I thought “wow, what compassionate and loyal friends he has.” But then once they opened their mouths, well, yikes. 😳 I don‘t think they‘re going to be friends anymore after this, do you? 😬 2y

quirkyreader For this I‘m going back to notes from 2019, when I study this chapter on another cycle I know that I will have more. What stood out at that time was 1:21, 4:5-6, 4:17, 5:2, 5:9, 8:13-19, 11:11-12, and 21:22. 2y

cwarnier God answers our prayers, and I alway like to think of him answering with a yes, no, .maybe or wait answer. We don't have any control over the answers to our prayer. We only have "control" over how we respond, and even then God knows all. 2y
quirkyreader In my readings this past week what stood out for me was Psalms 118:8. This seem like it could have been written during the beginning of Chronicles, if we go chronological to the time when the books were written. And Samuel 16:7, which is also near that time as well. 2y
quirkyreader A super cool book would just be the Psalter with the historical books that relate to psalms placed through out the text. Also, if anyone has an Ollie‘s near them go this week. All religious books, including Bibles will be an additional 15% off. 2y

BookBabe @cwarnier I get it….Yet there are times in the Bible when God changed His intended course of action as a response to prayer. Two that come to mind: when God wanted to annihilate Aaron and the Israelites but Moses pleaded for Him not to (Dt 9); and when Hezekiah was dying and prayed to the Lord, & God extended his life by 15 years. (2Kg 20:1-6) 🙏🏻 Praise God! 2y

Roary47 So behind in the reading… However, I thought it interesting in 2 Chronicles 3:17 that Solomon named the pillars. One was Boaz who is Ruth‘s husband an ancestor of David. The other is Jachin who is the fourth son of Simeon. What is more interesting is these names both mean Strength. So cool. 😍🥰💛 2y

BookBabe Okay, I‘ll go first. I got really behind this week, just because I have a hard time reading genealogies and lists. Still playing catch-up. A couple things stood out to me as I was reading, which I found encouraging and delightful…and I‘m quite sure I would‘ve missed them if I were only listening to audio. 2y

Roary47 My goal is to catch up by next week. With summer school and VBS I only had time to sleep last week. My devotion time was replaced with Christian songs to relax me. 2y
quirkyreader What stands out for me every time I read Chronicles is that you will have a ruler that follows the way of his “foreign” wives to impress them and make them happy, and then you will have a ruler that walked in the way of his “father” David. There was never a continual streak of the “sons” of David. 2y

BookBabe Well, I for one am amazed at Solomon‘s fall. He was given the wisdom of God, God came to him and spoke to him, and yet Solomon still turned away from the Lord and worshiped other gods because he was led to by his women. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I don‘t get it. Where was all that wisdom then? 3y
BookBabe I really enjoyed Elijah‘s story though. 3y
quirkyreader With Solomon‘s fall he wasn‘t thinking too clearly. He was focusing on what can I accumulate, who can I add to my harem, and so forth. He lost focus of why he was here and the gifts he was given to glorify God. He was serving two masters, and greed won. 3y

BookBabe I‘ll go first. I talked about this in our zoom call today, but I‘ll repeat it here for those of you who didn‘t make it. ☺️ The biggest thing that stood out to me is the consequences of sin. We‘ve seen it over and over at this point. It was very evident in David‘s story. 3y
BookBabe David was “a man after God‘s own heart.” He was anointed, blessed, and brave. He was so very adept at walking in the Spirit and not in the flesh. 3y

BookBabe Before our very eyes, the righteous , brave, heroic David becomes insecure, driven by fear, and his whole life falls apart. So sad. 😢 3y
Allylu I‘m reading 2 Samuel as well as 1 Corinthians. Haven‘t got to the Bathsheba part yet. David is still calling on the Lord and uniting Israel on the one hand and Ezra is looking back and retelling the story. Fascinating. 3y
mobill76 Remembering the times that Christ was called the son of David, there are some parallels I think in Cpp 15 & 16. David's anguish on the Mount of Olives, his betrayal by Meribaal, his cursing by Shimei. Of course, the whole scene of David losing his beloved son hung on a tree was a prefiguring of God's loss of his own son. It just gives me chills. 3y
Mimi28 Thanks for the tag 😉 I read 3 or 4 daily devotionals but hardly ever read the actual Bible. I have found lately with my health issues and especially anxiety about my mom the studying the word and spending time with God is the only thing that really comforts me and calms me down. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽❤️❤️❤️👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 3y

Isaiah 26:3 “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” ❤️ Philippians 4:6-7 “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” ❤️🙏🏻 3y

More drama in today‘s reading for the #BibleBuddyRead (1 Samuel 26-29). Saul goes after David AGAIN! Can you believe it?! 😳 Then Saul consults a medium which God‘s Word clearly warns not to do (Leviticus 19:31 and Leviticus 20:6; later the Bible also reiterates this in Revelation 21:8; 2 Kings 21:6; 2 Chronicles 33:6; Galatians 5:19-21). 😧

What can we learn from Saul‘s mistakes?

BookBabe Reading Ruth in the past, I never could understand why Ruth was so determined to follow Naomi and stay with her. My She Reads Truth Bible (CSB) gave me some very helpful perspective on this question and the entire story of Ruth overall. She Reads Truth pointed out that Ruth was making a choice to follow the Lord. “This decision to stay with Naomi was so all-encompassing because it was a decision to follow the God of Israel.” 3y
BookBabe I really love this Bible. It has devotional pages throughout, but it‘s not the typical devotional that I‘ve seen before. These focus on deepening your understanding of what you‘re reading in the Scriptures.

BookBabe Naomi's husband had died, and so had her sons. I imagine Ruth,
Orpah, and Naomi sitting around the metaphorical kitchen table,
staring at their hands. Together, but alone, the bonds that held them seemingly gone. Each wilting under her own personal loss. What happens next? How do we pick up the pieces from this?

BookBabe Ruth chooses Naomi—that's her next step. She binds herself to her mother-in-law.

Ruth vows to do six things with Naomi: travel with her, dwell with her, claim her people, worship her God, die where she dies, and be buried where she is buried. Ruth isn't messing around!

BookBabe 🔆This decision to stay with Naomi was so all-encompassing because it was a decision to follow the God of Israel.🔆

God used this mother-in-law relationship to woo Ruth to Himself and, quite unexpectedly, plant her in the genealogy of Christ. It wasn't Naomi's beauty, riches, or liveliness that drew Ruth to her; it was her wisdom, virtue, and grace—fruit God had graciously grown and preserved in her, despite her enormous loss.

BookBabe Ruth saw the mighty work God was doing in Naomi, and didn't want her brush with the God of Israel to end. So there she stayed, clinging to the one person who linked her to Him.
Ruth's faithfulness to Naomi was not of her own strength. But in the midst of Naomi's doubt and sorrow, God revealed Himself as faithful and compassionate. Naomi believed God was afflicting her, yet Ruth was able to see that despite their misfortune, God was still for them.

I‘m really enjoying the book of 1 Samuel. It is so readable and reads like a novel, at least in the CSB version which I‘m reading. It is fascinating and I‘m having a hard time putting it down to not read ahead! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

BookBabe I love these readings in Proverbs. It actually spurred me to spend a lot of extra time this past week in Proverbs for additional study. These chapters of Proverbs offer so much wisdom, especially in very practical matters like taming the tongue, controlling your anger, being careful about the words you choose, etc. 3y
BookBabe In Judges, I was feeling frustrated with the Israelites for again and again and again sinning against the Lord, and in such dumb ways, by worshiping silly idols that anybody should know are not actually gods. 🙄 On a positive note, it was neat to see a woman in such a position of authority, respect, and power, Deborah the judge of Israel. I also liked how Barak refused to go to battle without her. 3y

cwarnier I don't know when I was supposed to read this, but Psalm 22 really stood out to me. And I think it's because we are almost done with Lent and this Psalm is what we read during the stripping of the altar during holy week growing up. It really hits home for me. 3y

BookBabe Ok, I‘ll go first 🙂 I was blown away by Psalm 22, which I‘ve read several times, but this was the first time my eyes were opened to the true meaning of it. 😳 Wow. ………. Psalm 23 is one dear to my heart, a comfort to me, and the first full chapter of Scripture I ever memorized. ….Psalm 25 spoke to me about my Christian walk, and I‘ll continue to reflect upon it. ❤️ 3y

BookDadGirlDad @BookBabe Absolutely! Deuteronomy for me is a "book" about the amazing feats God did to bring Israel out of Egypt and what He would do to get them into the Promised Land. It shows His power, holiness, and faithfulness to what He promises. It shows a God who is loving enough to explain how we are to worship Him and live before Him. No guess work! Deuteronomy is a book of extravagant grace for His people. 3y

cwarnier I read Psalm 22 and immediately thought of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday and the stripping of the altar. This is the passage my father always reads during this time. 3y

One of the allusions used is “'turn the other cheek'', which means to not react when harm is done to you, or responding to injury without revenge and allowing more injury.

TheMrsShaw So if “turn the other cheek“ was used in ANOTHER work, then yes, this would be an allusion. But when used in the bible, it can't be an allusion to itself. Good try. 3y

Can anyone explain why after his name change sometimes he is called Jacob and other times Israel?
This is just one example of how it is used back and forth.

According to Google, this inscription and book ornament above a door in #Delft mark the building where the first Bible in the Dutch language was published in 1477.

I took a photo to remind me to look into this, as I wasn‘t sure of the translation at the time. Do you know if this correct, @BarbaraBB ?
