When I started this book,I immediately wanted to bail.Nahid, the narrator has just been diagnosed with cancer. She came across to me as a despicable person-angry,nasty, to her daughter & those around her.But something pulled me back into her story & I am so thankful I responded to that pull.As her life story slowly emerged,as she struggled to understand her journey herself & cope with her diagnosis,I began to feel empathy.A refugee of the Iranian🔽

kspenmoll 🔼 Revolution, she threw herself into her role with idealism & little understanding. She was marked as traitor to the Iranian regime for life.So she& her husband immigrated to Sweden. The trauma of herself as a refugee,& her compounded losses:family, culture, roots, country, never left her.She cannot get over all these losses- she states starkly:”You are condemned and your children are too. Everything remains, and everything is passed down.”🔽 (edited) 3d
kspenmoll 🔼 Her statement reminds me of The Postcard & the idea that the Holocaust & its resulting trauma stays in survivors‘ body cells for generations. (edited) 3d

Perfect book for #naturalitsy.A library find,it has a little bit of everything:magical realism, romance, storytelling, witching of the best kind.Three sisters have inherited family gifts: Sage communicates with & heals plants.she can marshal them to do her bidding.Teal can use emotions to affect the weather-when angry, thundering & lightening storms, the dead Skye tamed animals such as bears. How do they use these gifts?Love, family, loss are themes.

kspenmoll Pictures next to the book is a small glass container of “witchy” gifts @Gissy sent me for our #yuletide including crystals, salt, a pinecone, cedar wood shavings & hawthorn berries, rosemary, mint,frankincense- perfect for this book! (edited) 4d

My suggestions for #CampLitsy24
—The Cemetery of untold Stories because I enjoyed her previous books & the whole concept of the book fascinates me.
— The Swans of Harlem- to learn more about the lives of these special women- intrigues me
— There‘s Always This Year- on Basketball and Ascension — I love basketball - on basketball & storytelling
— The Hunter - Tana French‘s novels/thrillers are engaging, at times disturbing, unique characters

monalyisha I‘m excited about Cemetery! 5d

This book redeemed my last experience in the series.
I walked with Brunetti along Venice‘s cobbled streets & narrow alleys. We glided over canals & raced in water busses. We drank coffee & wine in its bars.A curmudgeon owner of a Murano glass making factory threatens the life of his environmentalist son-in-law because of his political stance. Then a night watchman in his factory dies under mysterious circumstances.Brunetti looks into both issues.

A must, must read.

How many times in history did this happen? According to to the author, beginning with Reformation, libraries were decimated by varying religious groups, with the intention of burning “controversial texts.” There are lists of these books.available today.“ Femina” was the category that destroyed female texts were cataloged under. I am reading the into- so much to digest on every page!

TheBookHippie Well. I need to read this apparently. 😵‍💫 and yes, why do you think conservatives are constantly trying to dummy down and remove books from public schools? So they can control the population. 2w
GingerAntics I think this author needs to do her homework. The library at Alexandria was destroyed, and with it almost all the scrolls (the equivalent of roughing 100,000 books), in 48 BCE by rioting Christians who wanted to destroy the pagan knowledge. 6d
GingerAntics The books that were rescued from the Library of Alexandria were housed in the library of the Temple of Serapis. It was known as the “daughter” library to the Library of Alexandria because it was created to house those rescued scrolls and added many others until it was destroyed in 391 CE by the Roman emperor in an attempt to eradicate pagan study and worship to establish Christianity as the sole religious and intellectual authority. (edited) 6d
GingerAntics Christians have been doing this ever since Paul and Rome took over the christian faith. These nuts have been doing this since the beginning. Sectarian destruction of libraries (christians destroying other christians‘ books) began in during the reformation. 6d

#springskies #involvesart This is the 2nd Gabriel Allon book I have read.It is a fast paced, complex thriller, that is impeccably researched.Allon is an art restorer & and reluctant Mossad agent/assassin,who is painstakingly restoring a Bellini painting in a Catholic Church in Venice. There is a plot to assassinate the current Pope from within the Vatican because of his plans to heal the breach between Catholics & the Jews. 🔽

kspenmoll Allon is trusted with this recent Pope‘s protection as he is doing the unprecedented for the Church: opening sealed archives so the world can have evidence of Pope Pius‘s silent role during the Holocaust. In doing so he hopes this act will be a step towards reconciliation with the Jews. 2w
