I love it when vestiges of past owners appear when reading used books.(B & N bookmark, previous owner‘s inscribed name)The tagged book is from The Barn, a huge sprawling used bookstore recommended by @Amiable , the other was a Thrift book purchase. #usedbooks

bookish_wookish Is that the Book Barn in Niantic? 19m
Suet624 So fun!! (edited) now
kspenmoll @bookish_wookish Yes! Believe it or not, my first visit was last summer. I scored an almost complete set in pristine condition of Donna Leon‘s books, plus more! Now a summer tradition! now

kspenmoll @Suet624 Makes me feel connected to readers before me! How is the snow!? We have snow but also sheer ice all over the walks & driveways. Snow is only about 4-6 inches but crusty w ice underneath. Treacherous! Glad I don‘t need to go to work until tomorrow -will wear my tall snow boots & trek thru the snow. You must laugh at me & my snow travails!!!!❄️❄️❄️ (edited) now
Amiable The Book Barn! Isn't it the best? now
bookish_wookish Would you believe that i still havent gone?! now
kspenmoll @Amiable My son & I had the best day, including eating at a fish place nearby. Will go next summer, of course! now
kspenmoll @bookish_wookish If you can get there its worth it. Is your son a reader? He may enjoy too. now
kspenmoll I 🩷 Litsy! now
Suet624 Well we received another 14 inches of snow since that last post of mine. I feel as if I've been shoveling for days on end. The wind has died down finally. It was scary having such high winds. I really have a thing about my power going out, but it didn't so I'm delighted. :) Today is sunny and VERY cold but I'm just about to finally sit and read for a bit. Be very careful tomorrow! I'd hate for you to get hurt. now
bookish_wookish No he isn‘t at all. We drove right by it during the summer and i couldn‘t stop because he wasnt into it! I told him that he could just sit and watch videos but he wasnt having it! now
kspenmoll @bookish_wookish Yes! It‘s such summer fun & near the water. then go yourself or with a friend! (edited) now

This book was so dense and meaty that I pulled quotes for my review. I can say that I am inclined to read more of Ardent‘s books but feel it would take more than a year & I would certainly need buddy reads, because although I am fascinated the philosophy thanks to the exposure from classes my son took in college,I struggle with processing philosophical thinking. Any takers? #adventuresinphilosophy

Suet624 I‘m not ready right now but, yes, soon I would be interested (edited) 2d
kspenmoll @Suet624 Sometimes it challenging right now-days I want only escapist reading. I found a penguin reader that dips into her work- maybe I can face that!!!! (edited) 2d
kspenmoll How is the snow? We have sleet, ice everywhere- cannot go out. Dangerous! 2d

Suet624 Oh yeah, that penguin reader looks interesting! We are overwhelmed with snow up here. It‘s like time is standing still. No cars, no plows. I feel like it‘s what Vermont used to be, with snow drifts over our heads. I walked to the bakery, a couple of blocks away and got myself a great big cinnamon roll. Just a few people out shoveling . It‘s gorgeous, but a lot. (edited) 2d

Rich, inexhaustible, copious in historical details, the minutia of life in the streets: wet steps, slippery with seaweed;rich in the brilliant analysis of literary luminaries‘ books;rich in dialogue; rich in social & political history; rich in current events, corruption.

For the most part, this meditative book of essays provoked reflective responses in me as evidenced by all the sticky notes that adorn the book‘s pages.I especially enjoyed all her musings on poetry& language, her role as a poet & the poetics in Benedictine chants, songs, prayers, & in the Bible. But for about the last 90 pages, I confessed I skimmed. I‘m not sure if it was just because became the book became repetitive or that I lost interest.#nunlit

Only on page 10 of this quiet, thought-provoking journal. Each small section is a deep dive as she writes of the need for a personal “ circle of quiet” to go to replenish oneself, balanced with a natural /created community. Totally relevant.
L‘Engle lived in Goshen, CT for 55 years until her death in 2007. Most of her published writing, & creating family was based here. The house remains in the family, but I am hoping to drive by it this summer.🔽
