Riverine: A Memoir from Anywhere but Here | Angela Palm
Angela Palm grew up in a place not marked on the map, her house set on the banks of a river that had been straightened to make way for farmland. Every year, the Kankakee River in rural Indiana flooded and returned to its old course while the residents sandbagged their homes against the rising water. From her bedroom window, Palm watched the neighbor boy and loved him in secret, imagining a life with him even as she longed for a future that held more than a job at the neighborhood bar. For Palm, caught in this landscape of flood and drought, escape was a continually receding hope.
Though she did escape, as an adult Palm finds herself drawn back, like the river, to her origins. But this means more than just recalling vibrant, complicated memories of the place that shaped her, or trying to understand the family that raised her. It means visiting the prison where the boy that she loved is serving a life sentence for a brutal murder. It means trying to chart, through the mesmerizing, interconnected essays of Riverine, what happens when a single event forces the path of her life off course.

I didn't get far with this one. I need to be grabbed and pulled in by memoirs as well as the fiction I read. Just didn't happen with this one. Perhaps I don't have the patience for a slower pace after recent favorite memoirs like The Fact of a Body and The Red Parts🤓

Something about this author just rubbed me the wrong way throughout this book--though there was some good stuff in the final hour. Oh well.

This is a challenging book, because the chapters in this memoir are really meandering essays where the author follows digressions and inserts observations that are only tangentially related to whatever seemed to be the main points. That said, these braided essays do reward the reader. This memoir --intimate and introspective-- makes a great companion and foil to Hillbilly Elegy, a wider-read memoir that generalizes way too much. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

MyNamesParadise I took creative nonfiction in college and balancing the essays was difficult for me. I prefer fiction writing 🙂 7y

In Riverine, memoirist Angela Palm embraces the braided essay as a form that explicitly and purposefully encompasses digressions and contradictions. As a reader, you have to be okay with just following along and trusting the experience will indeed be worth it. I just wish this explanation had been at the beginning of the book and not the end; I wouldn't have been surprised by all the meanderings in the text.

OffTheBeatenShelf.com I love braided essays. They're also one of my favorite things to write. ❤️ 7y

On the preeminence of corn, in the US in general and in her community in particular (as the author grew up in Indiana farm country and once worked as a corn picker.)

cariashley Oh man, the corn industry has terrified/fascinated me for ages 😳🌽 7y
Texreader Here in Texas it's all about the stories of the cotton pickers. My moms relatives picked cotton. I've seen pictures. Such a hard hard life. 7y
Nebklvr @Texreader that had to be brutal. Cotton is poky. I always thought it was soft--not so 7y

Texreader @Nebklvr yes I've heard that. Even the littlest kids had to pick cotton. And they were so so poor. We are so lucky. It's one reason I enjoy historical fiction. It reminds me how hard life was for most humans not that very long ago. 7y
badnorthern I will never forget reading in one of Michael Pollan's book about how we have so much corn in our diet that there are traces of it in our fingernails! 7y
quirkyreader Now this is stuck in my head, There is more than corn in Indiana. It's the heartbeat of Americana. I grew up in Michigan corn country and now I live in Indiana. The corn industry is especially creepy considering everything it's in. When some kids see what real corn looks like, especially Indian corn they freak out. The corn of 2016 is way different than the corn of 1816 and 1916. 7y

Why is it that adults are obsessed with girls' bodies?!?

Robothugs I always enjoyed being told I had "child bearing hips" ? Not really something to tell a young girl - find another way to build her self esteem! ? 7y
Robothugs In order to change the way boys are with girls and girls think of themselves, we need to teach them young. But unfortunately society has already gotten to the adults who are supposed to teach the children... 💁🏻 7y

I found this book a bit frustrating. It is a braided essay of a memoir. The sections about her childhood friend/love Corey are the strongest: full, rich, emotional, and heart-rending. Some of the other thoughts are quite good, but others weigh down the story, making me want to skim past them. I would have preferred a narrative more filled with her life with and without Corey; it would have been stronger.

rivercityreading I'm with you on this one. I think I just expected there to be more to the story, I think? Without that expectation going in, I think I may have enjoyed it more. 8y

Palm knows how to write creative nonfiction. No question. At first I didn't like the navel-gazing feel of the narrative, but I kept reading and discovered what she had done structurally. She wowed my socks off (considering this is her first book). And seriously, rural childhood in a riverbed, teenage angst, murder, what's not to like? I can't wait to see what she writes in the future. Def worth of the Graywolf nonfiction prize of 2014. | ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Misanthropester I'm always anxious about creative nonfiction & memoir for exactly that navel-gazing reason, but Greywolf is great press so I'll trust it & your rec 8y

Beautiful and evocative memoir. Palm focuses on how her childhood environment shaped herself as opposed to her friend Corey. The strength of the writing fades a bit in the last 50 pages but overall it is a very vivid and compelling work.
