If you have an interest in comics, this book gives you an in-depth understanding of how an artist creates their art. While this didn't meet my needs, it was still a good read.

My #litsyrecipeswap package arrived earlier this week . . . while I was out of town at a library conference (shout-out to my mom for bringing my package into my condo and also for pet sitting my kitty). This package was well worth the wait! Thank you @Graciouswarriorprincess for this super fun pack of goodies! And thanks to @BennettBookworm for hosting!

Graciouswarriorprincess Hurray! Thank you, Mom and so glad that you liked it! :)

I constantly recommend UNDERSTANDING COMICS to people who‘re new to the medium, so I figured it was about time I reread it. For the most part, it holds up and delivers some valuable insights, but I forgot how academic it gets. (It‘s conversational academia, but still.) McCloud assumes you‘ve got a decent number of critical tools at your disposal, and that you‘re willing to put in some work.

Well, this is fascinating. Extremely involved and mind bending, I‘d say this is quite an academic take on comics and their importance. I enjoyed it a lot, be aware it‘s not a short read, there‘s SO much in this. Really good for those who are passionate about this medium. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

@Riveted_Reader_Melissa finished my second book for the #nonfiction2019 challenge! An excellent discussion of what goes into comics and how to make the most use of them, based on the history of communication through visual media, from cave paintings and codexes to engravings and comic books.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I had not heard of this one before, it sounds excellent though. I‘m stacking that one. Have you read this one @Gezemice 6y

Reading materials for my graphic novels class! Understanding Comics is an amazing book to learn what the different styles and basically the reason artist and writers do what they do from the space away from each panel to the different fonts. #litsyloveslibraries #libraryschool #gradschool

Graywacke I‘m curious what school you‘re taking the class at (but understand if that‘s private info). My wife took a graphic novel class at U of Houston and raved about it and still follows the professor (who writes GN, but doesn‘t illustrate them). 7y

#TBRtemptation post 4! This book is a classic. Praised as a must-read by everyone from Gaiman to Spiegelman to Groening to Eisner. It's the seminal examination of comics art: its history, technical components, and cultural significance. Look between the panels, the lines, and the symbols. This book will explain (just about?) everything! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Only a couple more days until #comicthon! What's in your stack? I've got some library materials to poke at, a bunch of Wolverine one-shots to dip into, and a goodly selection of digital comics I got through Humble Bundles and should've read a looooooong time ago. It's been a few months since the last #comicthon (had to account for the holidays and the #LetsGetGraphicWeeklongMarathon), but IT'S BACK!

On Sunday, February 25th, you're invited to binge on comics with like-minded Littens. Whatever you love is welcome: trades, single issues, OGNS, manga, strips, webcomics... you name it! There's no minimum goal, either; just read comics, have fun, and share your progress on Litsy.

If you want a more in-depth (but still brief) discussion of the terrible, horrible thing where comics readers privilege writers over artists, Jay and Miles cover it within the first ten minutes of their latest episode. They also discuss the opposite phenomenon, which held sway throughout much of the 90s.

http://www.xplainthexmen.com/2018/01/182-lunch-with-technet/

#comics

xicanti Sidebar: I feel like anything I've ever thought about, Jay and Miles will eventually cover. Last episode, they also talked about how people of our generation (they're close to my age) went through that pretentious phase where they weren't COMICS, they were GRAPHIC NOVELS. Which, of course, ties into why I don't use graphic novels as an umbrella term. Too many associations with pretension, though I understand many contemp readers don't intend that. 7y

Although this book shows it‘s age occasionally (published in 1993), McCloud is witty and expansive and wonderfully enlightening on the storytelling process. And though the book is specific to comics, many of the insights can be applied to other storytelling mediums. 💡💡💡💡💡

I see a lot of Littens looking to try comics this year for challenges or general interest, and I want to offer two pieces of advice to grease the wheel:

1. Comics is a medium, not a genre. You're more likely to enjoy your first dip if you start with a genre you already love--and whatever that is, people've made comics in it. Ask around for recs!

2. UNDERSTANDING COMICS by Scott McCloud can help you learn comics' visual language. You want it.

MisterWhitaker SPOT on! Great advice. 7y
xicanti I'll also add that I use "comics" as an umbrella term rather than "graphic novels," which many Littens favour. When I was a younger comics reader I saw a lot of snobbery around the latter term, and it left me feeling like calling all comics "graphic novels" is a lot like calling all firefighters "flame management specialists;" ie, dressing something up in a fancy term to mask a shamefulness that didn't exist in the first place. 7y
xicanti (I also get that a lot of the people who use the term NOW are distanced from that initial snobbish movement. The association remains for me.) 7y
See All 9 Comments
Larkken @xicanti interesting. As someone who has always had a hard time with the medium I guess the differentiation was helpful to my mind to separate Gary Larson or comic strips, which I loved, from longer, connected books, which I did not. I could see how it would seem to be snobbery. 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk Well said! Also, BONE! 7y
xicanti @Larkken I also like comics as an umbrella term because it makes sure comic strips are included. So many people who're into the longform books look askance at them, even though a lot of good work happens on that side of the equation. (The Moomin books in the picture are comic strip collections.) 7y
xicanti @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I'm way overdue on a BONE reread. 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk Scholastic has done a great job of getting colorized Bone trades into elementary school libraries and book fairs, so I regularly get to recommend and talk Bone with my students. And it‘s awesome. 7y
BkClubCare Thank you. 7y

I started a new #bookclub this month (woohoo!) and it‘s all about the #comics :)

Our first pick is Scott McCloud‘s Understanding Comics, which seems like a solid place to start discussing the medium. Originally printed in 1993, McCloud mentions all the comics in print BACK THEN would take a small army to keep on top of. Well how about 24 years later? There‘s a tsunami of titles out there to explore.

Bradleygirl I want in on this book club and also to know if y'all are going to do MAUS (the behemoth, the acclaimed) 7y
MoniqueChristine MAUS is such a fantastic book with so much to unpack. I‘d love to tackle it with the group at some point, definitely. We‘re meeting on December 11th to discuss Understanding Comics so I‘ll be posting that night with blurbs about what was talked about. I‘m so excited!! There so much to go over with this one. :D I‘m not sure how to go about it, but I‘d love to make it possible for you and others from Litsy to join in if you‘d like. Any suggestions? 7y

What's a #comicthon, you ask? A casual, one-day, comics-focused readathon! There are no targets to hit and no limits on the sorts of comics you can read. That being said, I'm going to indulge in single issue comics and I don't have trades yet or the ability to review single issue comics on Litsy. Even though we don't live there anymore -- it's been two years since we moved away-- I must do a shout-out for Colorado Springs' fabulous used bookstore, Hooked on Books. My son loved this place too, as their manga/graphic novel section was also amazing. They've since opened a second store w/the same name in downtown CS, and I'm sure it's worth checking out too. I miss this #getindie bookstore! P.S 😱how young he looks at this, our last visit!

britt_brooke I used to live in the Springs, too! But I've been gone about 7 years. We used to go to Poor Richards quite a bit but I've never been to this one. I miss seeing Pike's Peak everyday. 😭 8y
ValerieAndBooks @britt_brooke I've been to Poor Richards too, but went to Hooked on Books all the time -- for one thing it was closer (we actually lived just north of, in Monument). And I get you on missing the mountain view -- our home had a view of both Pike's Peak and the AFA! 8y

One of the best explanations of the medium of comics. It thoroughly explores the form and function of graphic narratives from a historical and multicultural standpoint.

uhhhhhh I loved this book, it was useful as an academic source without being dry and dull and the sheer passion of the McCloud for his subject was obvious from even the first page. 8y
