I didn't write this book. I stole it... A Parisian bookbinder stumbles across a manuscript containing three stories, each as unlikely as the other. The first, 'The Education of a Monster', is a letter penned by the poet Charles Baudelaire to an illiterate girl. The second, 'City of Ghosts', is a noir romance set in Paris in 1940 as the Germans are invading. The third, 'Tales of the Albatross', is the strangest of the three: the autobiography of a deathless enchantress. Together, they tell the tale of two lost souls peregrinating through time. An unforgettable tour de force with echoes of Roberto Bolao, David Mitchell and Umberto Eco, Crossings is a novel in three parts, designed to be read in two different directions, spanning a hundred and fifty years and seven lifetimes.

A clever premise and with interesting elements and structure. The cleverness and creativity did not make up for unlikeable selfish characters. The MC tried to rise above and to justify their actions, but ultimately stole from others indiscriminately and with little remorse. I wanted to give it a So-So rating, but as I am writing this review I am changing it to a Pan and 2 of 5 ⭐️. I wouldn‘t want to get coffee with any of the MC iterations.

Very intriguing structure - I was v excited to read. But the albatross tale just went on forever, and didn't particularly hold my interest. I read it in the out-of-chapter-order order (the Baroness sequence). Fantastic idea, but meh.

I am so excited to start this book. It‘s a bit like choose your own adventure, but not. I‘m going to try and read it in the sequence below.

Such a fun premise for a book!

My first completed book for the June #20in4 readathon. There are two ways to read this novel, either straight through or by jumping around using the Baroness sequence. Compared to David Mitchell, which I get, but there‘s not the same sense of gravitas that I inferred from Cloud Atlas in Crossings. Instead, it‘s more of an interesting puzzle with a speculative slant. Still, an impressive feat and I enjoyed the adventurousness and panache of it.

Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 3y

I really took my time with this one and it was so worth it. Super complex and dense. I followed the Baroness sequence which meant a lot of flipping around the book, which I think works really well with the nature of the story. It was unmooring to not know where the end is.

Soubhiville Wasn‘t this a neat book? Someday I‘m going to go back and read the baroness sequence, I read it cover to cover. 4y
Godpants @Soubhiville incredible. I‘m so curious what it would‘ve been like to read it straight through. I‘ll definitely have to go back and do that. 4y

My kobo needs charging which means I need to start another physical book. I‘ve put off this book since the summer since it‘s pretty conceptual. You can read it two different ways, and I didn‘t have the mindset to pick my own adventure I guess. I‘m going to follow the Baroness sequence.

I do love me a weird book & this totally fit the bill. A total genre bender: bits of historical fiction, mythology, fantasy, thriller, & all of it a lot of fun. The writing is super ambitious, as is the premise, & I thought it was executed wonderfully. The reader does need to be an active participant to glean the full intent. I read & recommend it in the Baroness Sequence. The story is very complex, but the story is very well-written & intriguing.

What if, just by gazing into another person‘s eyes for a few moments, you could swap bodies with them? That‘s a crossing, and that‘s what this book is about.

I read it the “traditional” way, cover to cover, and it was arranged as three stories or novellas with the crossings as the central theme.

I‘m very interested to hear what anyone who read it as “The Baroness Sequence” thought.

An interesting and strange read.

Linsy Hmm, I think I have to try! (edited) 4y

“The Law‘s greatest gift was the crossing. To look into the eyes of another, to sense the stirring of one‘s soul, to be transported into the body of the other and dwell therein until the time came for the return crossing–this was the treasure the Law had bestowed upon us.” — This book was so unexpectedly (to me) incredible. I did a splurge and joined #fantasticstrangelings book club from Nowhere Bookshop. This is my first shipment and it sounds right up my alley! I‘ll be reading the non linear story line and comparing notes with @Soubhiville at some point. Fun times ahead, hopefully! #bookhaul #fantasticstrangelingsbookclub

Soubhiville @BookNAround I‘m about 3/4 through and it‘s strange but I do like it. I‘m so intrigued about the other reading order... 4y
LilMrmd79 I splurged too last month through Fantastic Strangelings and said I would cancel. But I didn‘t. And now I‘m not so sure I will since she just listed all the perks with her upcoming book next year. 🤷‍♀️ Guess I‘ll just have to stay in the club. How are you going to read this book - straight through or Baroness? 4y

This novel is so inventive - it can be read the traditional way of front to back or by skipping around to various chapters as laid out in the preface. I loved this concept, as well as the fantasy and historical elements. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #arc

EKonrad I read it the traditional way, front to back. When I was done, I did flip back through in the alternate way just to see what it would be like. I think I would have preferred the standard way anyway. 4y

vivastory The numbers here in KC are still really high. It is only a couple of weeks ago that they passed city ordinance for masks which should have been in place months ago. I just got this book and it's AMAZING!!! 😀💕📚 It's basically a story within a story, and you can read the book normally, from beginning to end-OR you can read it by following the alternative chapter sequence. If you do it that way, you just follow the page number that is noted at the end of each chapter! How cool is that?! I've never seen anything like it before! It's really really AWESOME!

SaunteringVaguelyDownwards You might want to try Jane, Unlimited by Kristen Cashore. She sets up a narrative, and then has a crucial decision point from which she builds 5 different endings, each in a different genre (realistic fiction, spy thriller, horror, sci-fi, etc). But each ending also hints at things that happened in the others, so I'm not sure if you could read them as a true choose-your-own-adventure or not. 4y
Branwen @SaunteringVaguelyDownwards Oh WOW! That actually sounds really cool! I'm going to have to check it out now! Thank you so much! 😀💕📚 4y

I really enjoyed this, especially the marriage of fantasy and French historical fiction. You can read it either in the conventional manner going front to back or in the Baroness Sequence that jumps around. I chose the conventional method. I definitely want to read it again in the Baroness Sequence.

Wow! I really liked this book. The crazy thing is you can read it either front to back, like a regular book, or read it by starting in the middle and flipping to different chapters. I read it the usual way, but even though I don't reread books, I plan on reading it again the other way.

Thanks Netgalley for the book

Three intertwined stories in different times - you can read cover-to-cover, or you can choose the “Baroness” method (explained in the preface) that guides you to jump around to different spots. The kindle version has links that say “go here.” I‘ve chosen The Baroness method, of course!
