The New Husband
The New Husband | D.J. Palmer
A riveting new thriller about the lies we tell ourselves from the author of Saving Meghan. Just because you love someone doesnt mean you know them. Nina Garrity learned that the hard way after discovering that her missing husband, Glen, had been leading a double life with another woman. But Glen's gonepresumably drowned while fishing on his boatso she can't confront him about the affair or any of his other misdeeds. A year and a half after the accident, Nina considers herself a widow, even though the police never found a body. Following a chance encounter with Simon Fitch, a teacher from her daughter Maggie's middle school, Nina finds love again and has hopes of putting her shattered life back together. Simon, a widower still grieving the suicide of his first wife, has found his dream girl in Nina. His charm and affections help break through to a heart hardened by betrayal. Nina's teenage son, Connor, embraces Simon as the father he wishes his dad could have been, but Maggie sees a far darker side to this new man in their lives. Even Ninas good friends wonder if Simon is supremely devotedor dangerously possessive. But Nina is committed, not only to her soon-to-be new husband but also to resuming her former career as a social worker. Before she can move forward, however, Nina must first clear her conscience that she's not making another terrible choice in a man. In doing so, she will uncover the shocking truth: the greatest danger to her, and her children, are the lies people tell themselves.

I really liked this book. It was a thriller about a woman whose 1st husband left her and their 2 children and was presumed dead. Two years later she was in a relationship with a new man. As the story developed so did the reasons for the woman to question who this man really was. As I got further along in the story it was hard to put down. I needed to see what happened next. The story came to a fairly predictable ending but it was a good book.

A low So-So
The daughter in this ended up being the only likable aspect of this book...that and the narration but sadly it wasn't enough to carry the book. Overall, it was a slew of little things that added up and left me feeling rather displeased with the whole experience.

This book surprised me! Initially, I thought it was another suspenseful story about a woman being manipulated by a new man in her life. New man starts demonstrating creepy, controlling behaviors, and the woman refuses to accept reality despite the people closest to her pointing it out. As the story escalated, I recognized that I was loving Palmer‘s twisty, wicked, and heart pounding story.

#50 of 2021. After the disappearance of Nina‘s husband and him being declared dead, she is reluctant to be in a new relationship. Simon is kind, trustworthy and she finds herself opening up to a relationship with him. When they move in together it puts a strain on her relationship with her daughter who hates him. This was a fun thriller. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

THE NEW HUSBAND
One day while sitting in the cafeteria, a boy I once judged and dismissed, a boy who was an outsider himself, asked if he could join me for lunch. I was reluctant at first, but then we started to talk and I found that this boy, a boy I never would have considered before, was smart and funny, generous and kind.

Eh. This thriller was a bit heavy handed. The reader was too much on the outside, so all of the red flags were very obvious. A good domestic thriller should you put so deep inside that you are just as blind sided as the protagonist. Not my favorite Palmer, but I‘ll give her another go. #netgalley ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I think DJ Palmer has a wonderful talent in developing family drama. Since this is my first book by the author, I cannot comment on how he generally incorporates thriller components but I felt that dynamic ruined the book for me.

For awhile this book seems like your average domestic thriller, repetitively relaying Simon‘s hidden agenda of emotional abuse and control of Nina, and then it picks up speed and hits with a blast of twists and creepiness! I really liked the way the author played out the plot, given it a totally disturbing vibe once you‘re involved!

The clutch for me was Maggie‘s ending of the book for sure!

Start out w/a cliff hanging mystery, what happened to Glen? Forward to an interesting new family dynamic Nina (Glen‘s wife) moves to a new house w/ her kids, & Simon. Simon is not only Nina‘ s new beau, also a history teacher in Maggie‘s school, awkward much?A bit of a slow burn, makes the build up well worth the investment. The story gets going things get crazy good, you'll devour the pages. Fans of domestic fiction & thrillers will equally enjoy

I enjoyed this domestic thriller quite a bit! Engaging from the start, the book really gets going two years after her husband‘s fishing boat is discovered- with a bloodstained deck and only the family dog on board. Now, two years later, Nina is trying to move on with the new man in her life. But her daughter has reservations about Simon... and after how poorly she seemed to really know her husband, can she ever trust anyone? Thanks, #NetGalley!
