“…we have to recognize that democracy is not a permanent good.”
Wow, so much of this is hitting hard today. Absolutely, and unfortunately, prescient.

I feel that this book is relevant more than ever as we are heading into a head spinning election season in the US. So much of what Abrams discusses is still so true just a few short years later. We are still dealing with voter suppression & gerrymandering. The chapter on sliding into authoritarianism 😳. As Abrams said, “Voting is an act of faith. It is profound. In a democracy, it is the ultimate power.” And one we need to continue to protect.
A book everyone on the left should read before the midterms. It will make you angry enough to remember to vote!
Abrams is a great writer - clear, concise, with lots of anecdotal commentary to make you feel the subject.
At times I thought she was focusing on Kemp a bit too much, but it is good she wrote what personally effected her.
"Americans like to think that we're invulnerable, but we are not. Our systems are not. Our democracy may be resilient, but it is also fragile."
Very excited for Stacey Abrams to officially announce she is running for governor again!
Tagging my favorite book read this month. A bit scattershot on the bingo board for October!
The more I think about The Paradox Hotel, the more favorable I am towards it. The Abrams and Oluo books were great to read in tandem and I am going to do my best to make sure my action doesn't end with just reading them. They both offer really practical suggestions for participating in ending systemic racism in the U.S.

I am on board the Stacey Abrams train. She so clearly lays out the threats to American democracy. And she lays out the solution to neutralizing those threats too. If only all our public leaders were so competent. #hope #audiobook #fairfight
Taking a break from “An Echo in the Bone” because one, it‘s heavy, and two, this is due on Tuesday. 😂 Settling in for some truth bombs from Sister Abrams. 🙌🏻💖 #ourtimeisnow #staceyabrams
Stacey Abrams is officially my new hero. This book is a little bogged down at the beginning with the minutia of voter suppression. But then she does this awesome thing where she tells you how to run an election campaign and how to get involved. This was written pre-election 2020. I read it for #bookclub.
#BookSpin done!
@TheAromaofBooks
This should be required reading in high school and college government classes. Detailed discussion of all the little ways (and big ways) in which voters‘ voices (particularly POC voters) have been suppressed to the detriment of our republic.
Stacey Abrams could have easily disappeared from sight after the Georgia governorship was stolen from her. But that‘s not who she is, and we‘re all better because of it. Here, she looks at all the ways voters have been and are being suppressed, with her own experiences as a guide but not the central story. This woman really knows her stuff and I learned a lot from this book. And I love that she continues to fight back.
An eye-opening book that is very intersectional in how the current system of democracy in America leads to voter suppression and disenfranchisement. Stacey Abrams is one of the most important influencers of our time in my opinion!
Abrams‘ book is a lesson on the importance of state and local US politics. She writes about many voter suppression techniques we all need to know about. Democracy only works if everyone can participate, and piecemeal 19th c amendments and activist legislatures can strip rights from voters. She discusses how state elections affect gerrymandering and the importance of the 2020 census in allocating funds locally.
She‘s an amazing woman!!
I‘m from the Midwestern part of the South, and I‘ve got a Culver‘s concrete mixer to prove it! Trying not to get custard on my book! 😂🍦
"Our nation‘s core narrative can be summed up in the disconnect between the Constitution‘s pledge of equality and the rampant disregard for that ambition that has plagued the United States of America ever since."
I‘m so excited that these finally came. One of my favorite doll makers (she makes prints & everything else) finally had a restock of these VP Kamala Harris & Stacey Abrams dolls. I need to stuff & sew them myself which isn‘t a huge deal since I don‘t have an office right now & my 5 year old would steal them. Plus she sent me a free sticker that she did of all the ladies from the inauguration.
Stacey Abrams is smart, savvy, compassionate, and a damn good writer. This book is all about engaging voters. Abrams covers the history of American voter suppression, voting rights and protections. She identifies the roadblocks to participation and strategies to help citizens engage in democracy. She communicates truths and strategy in easily digestible and straightforward ways. Highly recommend!
Reading an enlightening article in the latest Time magazine.

I‘m a fan. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Yaassss! A through, accessible book about voter suppression, gerrymandering, and political strategy. Absolutely loved this book which details ways everyone can help, talking points, and proposed policy changes. 💯

Wish you knew a bit more about the details of voter suppression, gerrymandering, or why the census matters so much? Hungry for hope and practical ideas for changing it all? This is the book for you, as it was for me - I learned a lot. I loved the audio version, because she reads it beautifully, and because just hearing her voice is inspiring and uplifting.
#myhero and a model of true leadership as well as an accomplished author. This woman is exactly who I want to learn from. I look forward to becoming more civically engaged after graduation. The work is just beginning. #thankyouGeorgia #BLM #Democracyforall
I hope to vote for this amazing woman someday! She inspires but hers is no easy politics. She works hard for that which she believes in.
This took longer than I expected because it‘s so dense. It‘ll require multiple rereads to truly absorb I‘m sure. Still - Stacey outlines what America is up against and the fight ain‘t fair. 💪🏻
Wow, wow, wow. We need more democrats like Stacey Abrams leading the charge. She is intelligent, driven, and works her butt off to fight for democracy.
Very educational and inspirational.
After losing her election, Stacey Abrams took her frustrations to the streets and has made a HUGE impact on voter suppression. She talks about how our system is broken, what‘s being done and what still needs to be done. She states facts and backs them with stories of herself and people she‘s met. She is such an inspiration and I took a lot away from what she has to say. I look forward to following her career. Also, it‘s her birthday today 🎂
No matter what ultimately happens with Georgia‘s senate runoff and the presidential recount, Stacey Abrams has made a huge impact. I watched the documentary “All In” about her this weekend. I need to read this book too.

Stacey Abrams is such an unbelievable woman. She took her frustration of losing 2 years ago and turned it into a huge movement. She gave so many people power and knowledge about their voting rights. Now I need to buy her books.
Yes, Queen!
If you‘re looking for the detailed story behind voter suppression this is a good place to start. She also talks about which voters political campaigns focus on and why. And what the census means to individuals, communities, and the entire U.S. Yes, there are lots of problems. But Abrams‘ proposed solutions are sound—and inspiring.

Abrams should be the governor of Georgia. She made more progress than other democratic candidates have in the past in the state. Excellent points about the failed system to elect leaders in our country. I'm angry and I want change. Abrams does too. Voting in local and state elections is vital and I'm going to vote forever and always the end. #nonfiction
Starting this Stacey Abrams book in earnest today. The “they” in the quote above is her parents, in relation to their experiences voting as Black citizens in the South.

So I haven‘t been posting much but I have been going to lots of online book events! This one was put on by my local library and they had a lottery for a free book for some attendees. I won! This came in yesterday‘s #bookmail! Yay! Can‘t wait to read it!
Have any of you attended any online book events? ❓❓❓
Fabulous!!!!
We are a better country when we defend the weakest among us.
Our Time Is Now provides a very good explanation of serious problems with our voting system, and offers solutions for these problems. In addition to this book, I would recommend Ari Berman's Give Us the Ballot for a more comprehensive history of these issues.
Bought this one yesterday. Can‘t wait to start it!!
