World's Strongest Librarian: A Memoir of Tourette's, Faith, Strength, and the Power of Family
World's Strongest Librarian: A Memoir of Tourette's, Faith, Strength, and the Power of Family | Josh Hanagarne
55 posts | 72 read | 83 to read
An inspiring story of how a Mormon kid with Tourette s found salvation in books and weight-lifting Josh Hanagarne couldn t be invisible if he tried. Although he wouldn t officially be diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome until his freshman year of high school, Josh was six years old and onstage in a school Thanksgiving play when he first began exhibiting symptoms. By the time he was twenty, the young Mormon had reached his towering adult height of 6 7 when while serving on a mission for the Church of Latter Day Saints his Tourette s tics escalated to nightmarish levels. Determined to conquer his affliction, Josh underwent everything from quack remedies to lethargy-inducing drug regimes to Botox injections that paralyzed his vocal cords and left him voiceless for three years. Undeterred, Josh persevered to marry and earn a degree in Library Science. At last, an eccentric, autistic strongman and former Air Force Tech Sergeant and guard at an Iraqi prison taught Josh how to throttle his tics into submission through strength-training. Today, Josh is a librarian in the main branch of Salt Lake City s public library and founder of a popular blog about books and weight lifting and the proud father of four-year-old Max, who has already started to show his own symptoms of Tourette s. "The World s Strongest Librarian" illuminates the mysteries of this little-understood disorder, as well as the very different worlds of strongman training and modern libraries. With humor and candor, this unlikely hero traces his journey to overcome his disability and navigate his wavering Mormon faith to find love and create a life worth living."

I thought this was an interesting book. I was worried that the faith stuff might be annoying but it was fine. (I'm agnostic or an atheist, still figuring out which.) The way he gives his syndrome a persons name was interesting, and also familiar to many of us with a chronic illness. The name of the book comes from his blog of the same name. (Now defunct according to my web search.) Overall an interesting story and well presented.

I just started this one and I really like it. I was worried the faith aspect would be annoying and so far it hasn't been.

The author relates his life story. Starting as a young book worm who crushed on Ramona and snuck Stephen King books from the bookmobile, he begins to have symptoms of Tourette‘s Syndrome. Wholesome tales of his charming parents, trying to get girls &coming of age in the Mormon church ensue; his love of books &struggle with Tourette‘s follow him into his adult life as he tries to get an education, a career &start a family. Humorous & fascinating.

This was a bit of a slow burn for me, but I especially enjoyed the last two chapters where Josh discussed his then current** crisis of faith in God and status of his Tourette‘s.

Josh grew up LDS in Utah and Nevada, the oldest of four kids. He loved to read. He developed Tourette‘s that was moderate until his mission at 19 when it became more severe. The book details his search for love, finding a career while disabled, and some serious work outs.

This was a highly readable memoir by a librarian with a fascinating backstory. His life is impacted by his Mormon upbringing, his constant battle with Tourette‘s, his love of reading, and his desire to challenge his 6‘7” body through extreme weight lifting. My assessment is that it was a great book to borrow from the library and not one I need to own.

ElishaLovesBooks Sounds fascinating! Stacked! 7y
RadicalReader @LiteraryinLititz I complete one hundred percent understand where you‘re coming from the good book to rent but not needing to own 7y

When Josh gets the shakes onstage during an elementary school play it's the beginning of a life long battle with Tourette Syndrome. Raised by parents that fostered his love of books (except maybe Stephen King 😂) Josh's memoir is funny, uplifting, and sometimes pretty sad. I found myself both laughing and crying throughout. A+ 😊

LiteraryinPA Fascinating premise! I've never heard of this one but will have to see if my library has it. 7y

I've been on a trend lately where I seem to enjoy the first half of a memoir but not the second. This one was the same... I enjoyed hearing more about Josh's childhood and growing up than I did about when he got into weights. But I'm not really interested in weight lifting so that's not really a surprise.

I checked out a couple of books at the library where I volunteer. I retuned a bunch of books at a neighboring library (whole different system). I checked the book drop this morning and found one of my books I mistakenly returned to the other library. Oops. Btw, it was due today! 😂😂😂

JacintaMCarter I check out books from five different libraries, so I always put a sticky note with the library name inside the front cover so I know where to return it. 8y
Luv2readbookz @JacintaMCarter Great idea. I usually mark it in my planner what books go where (I borrow from multiple libraries too) but I totally forgot to mark this one down. I'll have to try your idea. Thanks. 💕 8y

I love this book #setinalibrary. I picked it up for one of my reading challenges (a character who has the same job as you), not realizing he worked at the Salt Lake library, half an hour from me. I'm about halfway through this book, and I think I need to be the author's best friend. He works at a library (so do I), in Utah (ditto), and is a former Mormon (hand raised here). He also loved Sweet Valley High, so, bonus. 😂 Of course, he also has Tourette's and can deadlift 600 pounds, but those are just minor details when we both were a little in love with Ramona Quimby.
