To Capture What We Cannot Keep
To Capture What We Cannot Keep | Beatrice Colin
60 posts | 36 read | 86 to read
Set against the construction of the Eiffel Tower, this novel charts the relationship between a young widow and an engineer who, despite constraints of class and wealth, fall in love. In February 1887, Caitriona Wallace and mile Nouguier meet in a hot air balloon, floating high above Paris--a moment of pure possibility. But back on firm ground, their vastly different social strata become clear. Cait is a widow who because of her precarious financial situation is forced to chaperone two wealthy Scottish charges. mile is expected to take on the bourgeois stability of his family's business and choose a suitable wife. As the Eiffel Tower rises, a marvel of steel and air and light, the subject of extreme controversy and a symbol of the future, Cait and mile must decide what their love is worth. Seamlessly weaving historical detail and vivid invention, Beatrice Colin evokes the revolutionary time in which Cait and mile live--one of corsets and secret trysts, duels and Bohemian independence, strict tradition and Impressionist experimentation. To Capture What We Cannot Keep, stylish, provocative, and shimmering, raises probing questions about a woman's place in that world, the overarching reach of class distinctions, and the sacrifices love requires of us all.

This was so captivating. I could have listened to this all day every day. The story she weaves was so vividly and complex. I can‘t even imagine watching the construction of the Eiffel Tower. It‘s breathtaking 100+ years later.

I‘m making a spreadsheet of my TBR.
Husband walks in and sees me with the laptop.
Asks, “Are you getting weird about your books?”

Me? 😳 Nooooooo.

wanderinglynn I have a spreadsheet of all the books in my personal library (with several columns so I can sort them in different ways). It‘s not weird. It‘s called super organized. 👍🏻😂 5y

Really enjoyed this historical romance set in 1880s Paris! It wasn‘t a straightforward romance, & I appreciated that you couldn‘t tell what was going to happen right from the beginning.

This was between a pick and so-so. A slow read, but I loved the time period. All that happened within the characters lives seemed to revolve around the building of the Eiffel Tower. I'm a sucker for historical fiction with bits of historical truth.

This premise sounded so promising, but it wasn't good enough to finish before it's due date of 3 weeks. Half way through, it was just starting to really get into what I originally understood the story to be about. I like audiobooks for the obvious convenient reasons, but I also tend to use audiobooks to get through books I don't find engaging enough to slog through visually. If I can't even make it through an audiobook, it can't be that good.

[DELETED] 3803335244 I use audio a lot of times to get through beasts of books. I read IT & I was glad I audioed it. So long! Sorry this one wasn‘t good. 6y

A gorgeous gorgeous cover. The story was fine but I needed more i think. Something just didn't click to make it amazing. Perhaps more depth to Cait or more connection in the love story. Not sure. Overall it's lovely and beautiful. Great descriptions and fast-paced mostly. Good. Just not great for me. Lovely quick historical fiction romance though, if you like that, which I do.

There were some good things in here. I liked the Eiffel tower backstory and the artists. The book was just so boring in places and seemed to jump around. It was billed as a love story, but don't expect that. The two characters who were supposed to fall in love barely shared any pages together. In a year, I will not remember anything about this book.

This book was a little disappointing for me. I'm not a fan of romance, and while this book tried to have romance, it never really took off. But there was a good bit of sex, and that's also a negative for me. I did like the history of the Eiffel Tower and the glimpse of life in Paris during the 1800's.

#TBRtemptation post! The library just processed this novel, which came out in November. A love story of historical fiction set in Paris during the Eiffel Tower's construction in 1887. Cait's a Scottish nanny and Emile is a French engineer. There's a lot to overcome for the two of them: class, sacrifice, women's social identity and role, family, etc. Lots of praise on the jacket. Added 😊! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

To Capture What We Cannot Keep is a historical fiction novel that tells about the building of the Eiffel Tower. Romantic, and full of historic detail, To Capture What We Cannot Keep starts out slowly, and gradually builds toward a beautiful ending, with it really starting to pick up around the 60% mark.

Didn't enjoy this one as much as I hoped The descriptions of Paris, it's people, and the building of the Eiffel Tower are spectacular, but the "romance" between the two main characters just dragged on. Most of the characters were frustratingly selfish as well so I just couldn't love it. ???

Bakingbookworm I just finished t and felt the same way. Loved the Eiffel Tower aspect but the characters were either bland or caricatures. Hmmm. Need some time to mull over things before I write my review 7y
candc320 @Bakingbookworm I read this as a buddy read with some other blogger friends and we all had very similar feelings about the characterizations vs. the descriptive powers of the writer, especially when it comes to the building of the tower. I'm excited to read your thoughts! 7y
