When I am having one of those days and I need to laugh a little, David Sedaris is my go to author. I appreciate the heck out of him for always putting a smile in my heart.

IT IS HAPPENING!!! After over 20 years of adoring David Sedaris, I‘ll finally see him live tonight! Will he be funny? Yup. Will it be heartfelt? Yup. Will he be brilliant? Yup. Will I make an ass of myself by fangirling when he takes the stage..? I cannot promise that won‘t happen. 😬😅 OMG! Hurry up, 8:00!
The stories written later in his life felt wiser, maybe because he‘d had more time to reflect on it all, especially the ones about his family. I don‘t have much more to say about this guy. Probably my absolute favorite now. His family reminds me too much of my own to not enjoy his work. So funny and touching

It took a little while - this starts with some early writing which had dated somewhat - but I now understand completely why Sedaris is so loved. I played some favourites (You Can‘t Kill the Rooster, Laugh Kookaburra, Six to Eight Black Men, Standing By) for Polly and Luke on our journey to Timbertop and they too enjoyed it. Recommend for a road trip with teens (but language warning and maybe skip the taxi driver!)
😂 Wouldn‘t you know — not long after asking @candority about my package for #Bestof2021Swap what should be waiting but my package from @Endowarrior21 — so excited to open in a few weeks and find out what goodies you shared!
Post Office was surprisingly not busy — but I got my #Bestof2021Swap into the mail! It should arrive Monday. Thanks for hosting @candority this was such fun!
Sedaris may not have worked in front of audiences in 2020, but he did manage to publish this excellent compilation of essays and short stories. I‘m the only person in the universe who hasn‘t read him before. But now I have the whole Sedaris catalog to anticipate! Thanks to my IRL book group for picking this one.

My weekend audio book, if you‘ve never listened to Sedaris read his own work, it‘s such a joy and I highly recommend it
I‘ve always really loved Sedaris but it surprised me how many of these didn‘t age well. 😬😬
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I just love David Sedaris. I‘ve read/listened to most of what he‘s published, and so recognized several of the essay in here, but was just as enthralled as the first time I heard them. I don‘t enjoy his fiction/fables as much as the essays but they‘re still so cleverly written. And I really love the essays, especially the ones about his family, and he ended with some great ones. Looking forward to Carnival Snackery!
Wednesday, my husband and I went to a David Sedaris Talk. It was super cute. He is so funny, and well, it was a great way to spend a #datenight.
Had the BEST time catching up with Heather and Rebecca - and seeing the always faaantastic David Sedaris - last night! I treated myself to a front row ticket as an early birthday present (it‘s in nov), and since photos aren‘t allowed, here‘s a pic of the podium. 😂 #nashvillelittens
So excited to see David Sedaris and my Litsy friends for the first time in forever! Loved seeing @Booksnchill and @britt_brooke in person again!
Stellar best of collection, often laugh out loud funny and some moving passages describing his sister's suicide and his mother's late-life alcoholism.
Like most essay collections, some are always better than others and this is true for this compilation. However the better ones are outstanding!!! When David reflects on his childhood and family there is nothing funnier or more heartfelt. I highly recommend this audio as David‘s narration was perfection. So many laughs and a few tears, too.
Reunited with an old friend 💕 David Sedaris has the ability to make me chortle repeatedly 🤭
David Sedaris knocks it out of the park once again.
The majority of this book I LOVED.
The essays I didn't like, I really didn't like.
But, as always, the good far outweighs the bad.
And you really should be listening to David read his books. What a treat 😊
I‘ve read everything Sedaris has ever written, so none of this was new to me. I wholeheartedly endorse his picks for this Best of Me collection. It‘s a really perfect selection - favorites like 6 to 8 Black Men and Me Talk Pretty One Day alongside the amazing stories of his family, both happy and sad. You see his growth as a writer and his penchant for dark humor. The audiobook version is a must have for the diehard Sedaris fan.
Not all of Sedaris‘ essays have aged well. A few of the essays are 5 stars—the painfully honest ones about his family and himself. A few were 1 stars, the ones where he is a tone deaf southern white man making jokes about race. Just not funny. I don‘t think humor has to be “politically correct”—I‘m a big fan of Sarah Silverman and Sachs Baron Cohen—but it does need to be self-aware.
Ok @Megabooks you asked for my #FebruaryThoughts
I read 29 books - 22 fiction only 7 NF ( last month I was even 17NF/17 Fiction)
My STANDOUT was Sigh, Gone ( NF) followed by Mudbound & Thursday Murder Club.
Honorable Mentions were: Shuggie Bain, Telephone, Betty, Fortunate Ones & Sparks Like Stars. Night Tiger was good, too.
Ready for #MarchBookSpin @TheAromaofBooks and #ToB21 @BarbaraBB 🥳🥳🥳
I love David Sedaris. I had the pleasure of attending one of his readings with my family. His performance was delightful, and he was generous and charming while signing our books. This is a collection of his favorite pieces, so I have heard nearly all of them before. I still laughed out loud. He reads his own audiobooks, and I highly recommend that format.
Simply put, a gem. A must-read if you love, or have yet to read a single story by him.
It‘s interesting to see the essays and stories David chose to include in this retrospective collection. The majority are from his adult life, not the childhood stories from his early books. I‘m not a huge fan of his short stories, but he picked the ones I actually like. Overall, you can‘t go wrong with a Sedaris book, and this is just what I needed today!
My first #audiobook with my new #librofm subscription.
Random Thursday in lockdown. David Sedaris makes me happy. With some hot chocolate that might or might not be spiked with bourbon.
#Bestof2020Swap parcel is flying all the way to Germany from little Connecticut!! #Bestof2020
What‘s there to review?
It‘s David Sedaris!
The title says it all!
I love David Sedaris. His material is hilarious- no matter if I‘ve already seen it. Some of his essays I‘d forgotten and some I was thrilled to reread and laugh. It was interesting to see which of all of his writing he thought was his best. Good book to pick up if you are feeling down😊
An excellent selection of previously published pieces, some hilarious, some touching, all of them read with the author‘s perfect comedic timing. I especially enjoyed the stories about his family: he makes it clear how much he enjoys the company of his remaining siblings. His last interaction with his sister Tiffany is heartbreaking. Even though I had encountered most of the stories before, it‘s like listening to good songs again. #LGBT #audiobook
Their house had real hardcover books in it, and you often saw them lying open on the sofa, the words still warm from being read.
I‘m ridiculously happy I learned about The Story Graph and switched. It has really bothered my that goodreads is Amazon owned. I love libro.fm and find their customer service to be excellent. And I love shopping in Indie bookstores.
I listened to this on Audible and it was wonderful, just as all of Mr Sedaris‘s books are when he reads them. The thing I particularly love about this book is that it is a collection of what he considers his best work. Some of them where favorites of mine and others surprised me that he considered them among his best. The Audible version ends with an hour long interview conducted by Paul Constant. Absolutely recommend for fans of Mr. Sedaris.
Just signed up for @candority 's #bestof2020 swap. I clicked the 3 genres I'm most likely to send, however I could have chosen a lot more!
We went to my happy place today. We also picked up some firewood. We are all prepared for the snowy weekend. I can‘t wait to relax in front of the fire.

This has been a much better reading week for me. I finished three print books, a novella on @SerialReader , and I found an audiobook to get me back into my audio groove. 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Now if I can just pry myself away from all the election news and actually get some reading done!!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sedaris hand-selected this collection, so it‘s his opinion of “best.” I agree with many, but would‘ve likely nixed the fiction. His short stories are decent, but he is such a master of the personal essay. That said, this was just what I needed right now! There‘s an insightful interview at the end of the audiobook (brilliantly narrated as usual). Naturally, I needed a physical copy, too. It‘s beautiful!

Meanwhile, the distraction I needed. 😍
One good thing that happened during this trash fire of a week. So happy to have this in hardcover. ❤️🙃
You betcha I used one of my precious Audible credits on the new David Sedaris book!!
I love listening to Sedaris read his stories. He‘s such a good storyteller and humorist. While avid fans like me have likely read most of the stories within, I still enjoyed it. The chronology also puts on display how he has matured as a writer, with increasing depth over time, with touches of sorrow and melancholy added in that give him more of a three dimensionality than you find in earlier work. Thanks to Libro.fm for the free listening copy!
