Peaces: A Novel | Helen Oyeyemi
43 posts | 27 read | 21 to read
The prize-winning, bestselling author of Gingerbread; Boy, Snow, Bird; and What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours returns with a vivid and inventive new novel about a couple forever changed by an unusual train voyage. When Otto and Xavier Shin declare their love, an aunt gifts them a trip on a sleeper train to mark their new commitmentand to get them out of her house. Setting off with their pet mongoose, Otto and Xavier arrive at their sleepy local train station, but quickly deduce that The Lucky Day is no ordinary locomotive. Their trip on this former tea-smuggling train has been curated beyond their wildest imaginations, complete with mysterious and welcoming touches, like ingredients for their favorite breakfast. They seem to be the only people onboard, until Otto discovers a secretive woman who issues a surprising message. As further clues and questions pile up, and the trip upends everything they thought they knew, Otto and Xavier begin to see connections to their own pasts, connections that now bind them together. A spellbinding tale from a star author, Peaces is about what it means to be seen by another personwhether its your lover or a stranger on a trainand what happens when things you thought were firmly in the past turn out to be right beside you.

I absolutely understand why this might not be everyone‘s cup of tea but I just love the absurdism and trying to figure out what it means. I picked this up because I am enjoying the short stories in What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours and wondered what a novel by this author would be like. Think I want to read a more normal book next but I want to read more Oyeyemi eventually! The scenarios just stick in your mind and don‘t let you go.

Strange but interesting, humorous tale of a train trip for honeymooners Xavier and Otto Shin. Only five people are on the train and they each have unusual pasts and surprising links to each other. A novel about breakups and “unfollowing” people. https://cannonballread.com/2023/08/peaces-elcicco/

@ncsufoxes I absolutely LOVE my #Blitsy box! Thank you so much! The Changeling is one of my FAVORITE books (yes, I‘ve read it before), but I suggest it to my 12th graders so much that my copies keep walking away! This is perfect timing because I have a student right now who wants to read it but I had no copies to share! I haven‘t read Peaces yet, so I‘m starting that tonight. Everything is perfect: the sleeve, the puzzle, the book marks. I ❤️ it!!

Readergrrl I should also say that the quilt puzzle has special importance to me. My mother was a master quilter. She and I went to an exhibit at the New Britain Museum of Fine Arts that explored the history of quilting in America. A large portion of the exhibit studied the importance of quilting as story-telling, message-bearing, and quiet rebellion to enslaved people in America. It was fascinating and we learned so much. I think fondly of that day often! 2y
Chelleo What an awesome package. Love hearing about the quilting exhibit too! 2y
ncsufoxes I‘m so glad that you liked everything. I bought that puzzle for myself a few months ago (still haven‘t put it together) & loved it. So happy that I chose that item. Enjoy! 2y

This book made me fall out of love with reading for several months. Absolutely no point to this plot.. read 100 pages and had no clue what was going on. No likable characters, the writing is mediocre.. don‘t waste your time with this

I'm not entirely sure what exactly happened here, but I mostly liked it. Absurd and ever so horrifying and highly confusing. While the audio was good, I think print would have been better as it would have allowed me to pause and take in sentences, see how the names were spelled, and flip back to check my recollection. On the other hand, I'm not sure that would have made anything clearer. A hell of a train ride. Love the cover.

Mystifying and nonsensical, and the first novel I‘ve ever read with mongooses. Oyeyemi‘s novels are always just a touch unsettling, but the setting and characters are enjoyable to know even if the work has a whole comes off as absurdist. Clever commentary on being seen or not in relationships.

What a weird fever dream of a novel. I don‘t think I really had a handle on what was happening until about halfway through. Xavier and Otto and their pet mongoose, Arpád, have been given a honeymoon gift by an aunt, a journey on a mysterious train, which appears to have no other passengers and then ultimately some very remarkable ones.

Returned this today because I hadn't picked it up in days and I always hate holding on to something if someone wants to read it. I might pick it back up later, just don't think I was in the mood.

Lindy It‘s her strangest yet. Did this one as a buddy read and I think that helped me stick with it. Neither of us could make much sense of it, yet we still enjoyed reading it. 3y
Andrea4 @Lindy I can understand that. It's certainly not bad or so out there that I had no clue what was going on but it might not be the best to listen to while I'm doing other things haha. This is my first read from her too. 3y
Lindy @Andrea4 I think I was in a better position than you for another reason: I've read every one of her books and my past experience led me to trust the author to take me wherever she wanted. 3y
Andrea4 @Lindy yea, I definitely want to read her other works- haven't gotten my hands on them yet. This one at least leaves me intrigued about her other works. 3y

So this is the one book I read in September, and kind of put the nail in my reading coffin ⚰. I really wanted to like this book, but I really did not enjoy reading it.
I was given a subscription of Litterati from my family, and for the first month I chose Kelly McGonigal‘s book club, The Joy Collective, and this was the first book I received. It sounded great to me. And I did enjoy some parts of this story. ⬇️

Tera66 I think I may have really liked this book, plot and all. But the writing style was really difficult for me. And I have heard this to be true for others that have read this. I have not read Helen Oyeyemi before, so I do not know if this is how her writing always is or if this book is different. But I just couldn‘t get with it. 3y
BkClubCare Yea, from what I understand, this author‘s style is an acquired taste or a willingness to enjoy the “trip-fantastic”. I have only read this one, might try another, not quite sure yet… 3y
Tera66 @BkClubCare I know people liked her book Gingerbread, and said it was different from this one. I would give it a shot. This one could have been great, just didn't quite make it. 3y

We‘ve finished Peaces. I think not many of us have finished the book or anything else to add to the things we said last week. Definitely not a very popular book among us, nor among the #CampToB people: “The second half of the book never answered questions I had built over time—and while it's not fair to expect answers, necessarily, I couldn't quite get over that.”

Please share your thoughts or insights about the second half of this crazy ride!

squirrelbrain Yeah, didn‘t make it to the second half - sorry! 🤪 3y
KarenUK I did finish but I thought it was a bit of a mess. Lovely writing of sentences but I found it rambling nonsense mostly. 🤷‍♀️ 3y
BarbaraBB @KarenUK rambling nonsense 😂 3y

This was for CampToB and my #bookspin book for August, but I still bailed!

I just couldn‘t understand what was going on - luckily I had a feeling I might not like it so borrowed it from the library; I‘m so glad I didn‘t buy it.

On the plus side, I‘m definitely improving on the bailing situation! 🤪

#CampToB July‘s official winner is Klara but ours is Whereabouts. Interesting!

Today is all about the first half of Peaces, a book with mixed reviews. “I have yet to make my way through an Oyeyemi narrative that hasn‘t confused the hell out of me. She routinely writes single paragraphs that contain what would be the entire plot of another writer‘s book”, I quote from the discussion.

Are you going along for the ride in this crazy train?

Cinfhen Hahaha 🤣 nope, I hopped off the crazy train…. Looking forward to reading 3y
batsy I think I'm sitting this one out because life has gotten a bit overwhelming lately and I'm behind on so many buddy reads 😅 3y
KarenUK I finished it but I didn‘t like it. The sentences are lovely, but the plot was so convoluted and messy…. A nope for me! 3y

Ruthiella Like @Cinfhen , I got off the train and DNF-ed after the first couple chapters. I‘ve read her before and her writing just is not for me. 3y
squirrelbrain Also like @cinfhen I bailed after 4 chapters @Ruthiella ! A bit too weird for me…. 3y
Cinfhen Such fabulous company but too bad none of us enjoyed this book @KarenUK @Ruthiella @squirrelbrain at least we tried 😁 3y
vivastory As I've mentioned, I loved 2 previous books that I've read by Oyeyemi. I was really intrigued by this one at the beginning, but around page 70 I found my mind begin to wander. Will definitely finish it, but I think that I have to be in a specific mind frame to really absorb her particular weirdness. I do appreciate the sporadic sentences that stand out for their striking similes, but I wasn't finding enough of those... 3y
Flaneurette Someday I will try Oyeyemi‘s short stories but this just didn‘t work for me either. I couldn‘t get a handle on whether it‘s supposed to be whimsical or sinister or what?! Could not bring myself to care, moving on.. 3y
AceOnRoam I haven't read it either. I knew it wasn't going to be my cup of tea! 3y
Tera66 I'm reading this book this month, I was gifted a Literatti subscription and this is the book of the month for the club I picked, but haven't started it yet. Definitely hearing mixed reviews also. 3y
BarbaraBB @vivastory I was intrigued too and enjoyed her style but somewhere I noticed I lost track, I couldn‘t concentrate enough I noticed. It‘s a shame, she writes beautifully, but I felt not interested enough to try again 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y
BarbaraBB @Tera66 I hope you‘ll like it of course! 🤞🏽 3y

I read the first half of this book for #CampToB and to be honest I am not sure if I‘ll read the second half. It‘s so weird. There is a storyline I like but it‘s hidden among so many others. And I do like the concept of a train existing of weird wagons but it‘s just too much. I lost track.

Cinfhen I only bought this one @squirrelbrain because it was buy one get the other half off and both books were for #CampToB and not available for me to borrow. I KNEW owning it would be a mistake 😫 3y
Cinfhen I know lots of readers who LOVE Oyeyemi @vivastory so maybe you‘ll feel differently about this book!!?? 3y
vivastory Probably. I'm planning on reading it, although I've given up on following #camptob It's impossible for me to chime in with the discussion during the day at work & lately when I get home from work I'm too exhausted. It's on my tbr though 3y
Cinfhen Ohhh, so do you want me to send you my copy @vivastory ?!?? 3y

Cinfhen Sure, lmk what you think when u pick it up @vivastory 3y
vivastory I will. I'm sure I will get to it at some point by the end of the summer. 3y
Megabooks I loved What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours @Cinfhen and @BarbaraBB but I was going through a magical realism phase. also read and loved Kelly Link, Helen Phillips, etc. at the time, but Phillips is the only one whose new releases I‘ve kept up with. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤔 3y
Centique @vivastory @cinfhen I have discovered my best way of reading Oyeyemi is to read it with @Reggie 😉 because the discussion made it much more impactful for me! Haven‘t tried this one yet though. 3y
Reggie @Centique ❤️❤️❤️ 3y
Cinfhen Any #BuddyRead with @Reggie sounds wonderful @Centique !!!!! I still credit @Reggie for explaining this book to me 3y

KarenUK It was a NO for me too! 3y
Cinfhen I feel better about my decision to bail @Ruthiella @KarenUK I just don‘t get it 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3y
Well-ReadNeck I didn‘t bail, but having finished, I have to say those of u who bailed haven‘t missed much. I agree with many of you, not one I‘d recommend. There were a couple elements where I thought, hey, this idea has promise, but none of those moments really led anywhere, IMO. 3y

A gay couple are on a honeymoon trip with their pet mongoose. It‘s a totally surreal journey, confusing and yet compelling. Nobody seems to know where this train is going, perhaps not even the author, but I love her playful prose so much that I just let myself enjoy the ride. To see or not to see. 2🌟 Lovely writing yet a nonsensical plot, and just didn‘t work for me. I loved the beautiful detail and descriptions, the anthropomorphized mongoose companions, even the mysterious journey on the whimsical train, but completely lost interest in the convoluted plot.... which is a shame, as I‘ve enjoyed her books in the past.
