Dial a for Aunties
Dial a for Aunties | Jesse Q. Sutanto
A hilariously quirky novel that is equal parts murder mystery, rom-com, and a celebration of mothers and daughters as well as a deep dive into Chinese-Indonesian culture, by debut author Jesse Q Sutanto.

Really enjoyed this one! There were several times I laughed out loud. (Spoiler free) summary: Meddelin is a wedding photographer with her family‘s business. When she accidentally kills her blind date, her mother & aunts help her take care of the body - during a wedding they are working. The generational, cultural and language barriers of the characters create a hilarious story! If you need something lighthearted & fun, this is a great choice!

Meddy‘s mom and three aunts conspire to set her up with a good man. Well, he turns out to be not so good and everything goes downhill from there. Especially when Meddy‘s old flame shows up.

Picture Weekend at Bernie‘s set at an Indonesian-Chinese-American wedding with meddling aunties instead of yuppies.

You need a good suspension of disbelief and I struggled with that. Otherwise it was fun.

💛 This week I finished this book. It‘s such a funny story that I laughed out loud multiple times! Imagine Weekend at Bernie‘s set at a massive wedding with 4 Chinese-Indonesian American sisters helping their niece hide a body.
I will definitely continue the series!
💛 Read if you also like a little romance on the side in your stories.
💜 Taken at my niece‘s reception last Friday! No one asked me to hide a body so big win!

Probably a bit unrealistic but so much fun! Kinda had some Weekend at Bernie‘s vibes, but with female familial bonds. And I could not stop laughing during the scene where Meddy was trying to explain sexting to the aunties. 🤣

TheAromaofBooks I struggled with this one because of the fact that they actually did murder the guy through neglect! I have a genuine (if completely irrational haha) fear of suffocating/being buried alive so I was HORRIFIED that that was the way he died. I wish she had just had him die in the car wreck and the whole book would have been better for me. WHY DID NO ONE CHECK HIS PULSE FOR REAL!?!? 6mo

This was wild from start to finish. It was absolutely ridiculous. You kind of have to accept it as it is and roll with it to get any enjoyment out of the story. It was completely unbelievable, yet I found myself entertained. The more you think about it, the more the story comes a little undone and doesn't make much sense. But, I had fun while listening to it.

I wanted to like this, but it really dragged on in most places and while the plot and concept are fun, it was not very engaging and I skimmed a lot of it.
A dead body is accidentally taken to a fancy wedding and the Aunties must figure out how to hide the body, save the wedding, and set up Meddy with the handsome and rich Hotelier.
2/5 read for a fun storyline but prepare to skip through a lot of circular dialogue

One murder, thousands of wedding guests and a Chinese-Indonesian family. This was a lot of fun and not what I expected at all!
When Meddy ends up killing her blind date, she calls on her aunties for help. It does not prove easy as her family are working on an island at a billionaires wedding. The family dynamics are brilliant and I enjoyed the second chance romance story too. Full of family life, friendship tales and laugh out loud moments.

Dial A for Aunties follows our main character Meddelin “Meddy” Chan, her Ma, and aunties as they work together to help get rid of her dead blind date‘s body. However, they are caught in a dilemma between disposing of the corpse and catering a wedding for their high-profile client. As they figure out a plan, Meddy runs into someone whom she hasn‘t seen in years, and she is overwhelmed with a slew of unexplainable emotions.

mary.agustin If you enjoy books with comedic relief alongside thrill and a dash of romance, this is the book for you. The main theme of this book is about communication; Meddy struggles asserting her own identity to her very stereotypical Asian family. 2y

This is a screwball romantic comedy mixed with a cozy mystery. I lost track of how many laugh out loud moments there are. Ma and the Aunties are so much fun as they each have their own ideas how to get rid of the body. The family relationship is the heart of this book. I love seeing families that would do anything for each other and the Chans definitely protect their own! If you want a lighthearted, fun book, this is the one for you!!!

Sometimes you just want a fun and over the top, unbelievable caper of a book and this is definitely that. Meddy is single, having left a long term college relationship without ever telling her family about her boyfriend. Her mother sets her up with a handsy guy, which kicks off all the crazy antics of the story. Would be a fun film. I am surprised by the many rave reviews of this book. I think the first thing I disliked about this book was that the aunties didn't have names. Which shouldn't surprise me that the character development was limited and very superficial. It had some “Weekend at Bernie's“ vibes and I had to remind myself that this was supposed to be more of a rom-com. The plot didn't really develop and became very repetitive.

I know this is supposed to be funny, but I find mom catfishing guys and sending daughter on blind dates creepy. And WTF? Daughter agrees to go on date, (with uncharged phone)then doesn't leave when the guy is a jerk, but rather gets tipsy and let's him drive her home? I can't even with this girl and her absolute lack of common sense.

I liked the characters in this book Medelin Chan and her Aunties are fun and quirky . I really enjoyed a glimpse into the lives of this Family. But the mystery was a bit of a dud - not impressed with the wrap up. But I will look forward to reading the next book in the series. So low pick. 💚🐉

I have recently fallen in love with cozy mysteries and I really thought this one would feel the same and it did not. It‘s very possible it‘s because I read it when I had Covid but I couldn‘t keep the aunts straight and the story was so convoluted that it took me out of the book completely. The ending was fun though so I ended up giving it a 3 stars and decided not to continue on with the sequel.

writerlibrarian It's very « Week-end at Bernie » -esque. I felt it was more a rom-com with a crime twist for me than a cozy. I laughed quite a few times reading it. 2y
AshleyKorinE @writerlibrarian I sadly did not, I don‘t know if it was because she tried to make it funny when they are toting around a dead guy and I had covid and didn‘t find it funny or if it just was not for me. 2y

⭐️or maybe no stars? This might be an unpopular opinion, but this book was TERRIBLE. Poorly written (all telling, no showing), asinine plot with a million holes, the characters weren‘t likable or compelling and made truly bizarre decisions. I think the reader was supposed to root for the MC, but she and her family were so callous and kept doing terrible things to cover up for terrible things that I wanted her to go down.
