An Elderly Lady Must Not Be Crossed
An Elderly Lady Must Not Be Crossed | Helene Tursten
Don't let her age fool you. Maud may be nearly ninety, but if you cross her, this elderly lady is more sinister than sweet. Just when things have finally cooled down for 88-year-old Maud after the disturbing discovery of a dead body in her apartment in Gothenburg, a couple of detectives return to her doorstep, ruining a perfectly good afternoon. Though Maud deftly dodges their questions with the skill of an Olympic gymnast a fifth of her age, she wonders if suspicion has fallen on her, little old lady that she is. The truth is, ever since Maud was a little girl, death has seemed to follow her. In these six interlocking stories, memories of unfortunate incidents from Maud's past keep bubbling to the surface, each triggered by something around her: an image, a word--even a taste. Meanwhile, certain Problems in the present require immediate attention. Luckily, Maud is no stranger to taking matters into her own hands . . . even if it means she has to get a little blood on them in the process. *Includes cookie recipes*

Low number completed this month. But all the fiction titles were very good. The Lighthouse Witches was my fav. The nonfiction, Down the Hill, was a little disappointing. I didn‘t care for the writing. #OctoberWrapUp

Backstory and closure story on our favorite murderer, Maud. I didn't enjoy this sequel nearly as much as the original--it dragged pretty hard in the middle and had a typical ending. But if you're invested in Maud, it's a worthwhile read.

Still relaxing, still cozy, and the victims are a little less cliche this time (though not by much). We also find out more about the titular elderly lady. The deepening of her character is probably why I enjoyed this more than the first volume, even if I would‘ve preferred her a tad more ambiguous. Too sympathetic for the cold creature that she is deep down; still, fun to read about.

3.75/5

Moved on to the sequel for more research for my old lady character. This one is different though because Maud is reminiscing on past crimes that were committed long before those in the first collection. She‘s such an interesting character and she makes you cheer her on as she racks up a body count ☠️

This was almost a DNF but I held on since it was a short listen. Maude is on a trip to Africa but on the way she reminisces about a number of recent and past seeming mishaps in which she has been involved. Even on this trip there is a surprising incident. The story then turns and Maude decides to do some good. Redemption perhaps? It certainly isn‘t justice. Just meh and 2 ⭐️out of 5.

Macabre, funny, and really quite good. I felt a bit guilty for liking these stories of Maud‘s evil deeds set in Sweden.

It felt as if I was encouraging her bad behavior. Clever, devious, hardworking, loves the fine things in life, and um, a cold-blooded, calculated, unrepentant killer— yet, it‘s really hard not to like her!😅

Enjoyed this follow up of Maud‘s activity. This installment looks at her current situation and looks back to situations in the past that called her to action. Just when you think maybe she is unredeemable her plans for the future seem hopeful and bright.

Murderous Maud, everyone‘s favorite ornery octogenarian, is back in a book of short stories - tied together as Maud reminisces during a flight to South Africa. I think I enjoyed this one even more than the first book. It was good to read stories from Maud‘s earlier life. And she mustn‘t be crossed . . . Unless you want to get beat with a stick. 😂

CampbellTaraL Hahaha! I'm so glad there's more Maud in the world. Definitely need to pick this up soon. 2y
Ericalambbrown @CampbellTaraL I really enjoyed it! And it‘s been so rainy that I couldn‘t get outside. I‘m glad I picked it up. 🤣 2y

The conceit has run thin. I enjoyed the first book where we met our elderly serial killer but this second book in the series just couldn‘t grab me. I was bored and a bit annoyed by the lady, and so I bailed.

A thoroughly enjoyable follow-up to Elderly Lady Is Up to No Good. While the shock of Maud‘s extracurricular activities was a big part of loving the first book, this gives both glimpses of her life and past as well as setting up her future. Maud is nicely rounded out as a character and has cleaned up the streets of some less-than-likable foes. Delightful.

This book was a lot fun. Maud dances circles around the police as she concocts her plans of revenge. The book is told through interconnected short stories.

Murderous Maud is back! I really enjoyed these stories, especially the Christmas element woven throughout, although not as much as An Elderly Lady is Up to No Good- which is pretty much a perfect read. The reader gets glimpses of younger Maud throughout, which is a treat! #WinterGames #MistletoeManiacs @Clwojick

Maude is an unlikely murderer, which adds a bit of whimsy to the stories. I LOVED the first book! This one makes is quite clear that Maude is simply a sociopath. Also- how can we believe that a woman who barely cared about her family and her one friend suddenly is moved deeply to care about a random black family in South Africa and “save” them? Cringe 😬

I went in with high expectations and most of them were met, except at the very end. It felt a little too “white savior” for me, but I did enjoy getting a peek into Maud‘s past. Ironically enough, I was talking to my boyfriend about homemade gingerbread houses the day I bought this book, so now we have a recipe!

Honestly, I‘m not sure what to make of this. That said, I really enjoyed the book and think that Maud is such an interesting and compelling protagonist! I believe this is a Swedish series, of which I had never heard of previous till now, but this seems to be a short story in the series. In this story, you get some background info and you just can‘t help but like Maud.
