Nona the Ninth
Nona the Ninth | Tamsyn Muir
Tamsyn Muir's New York Times and USA Today bestselling Locked Tomb Series continues with Nona ...the Ninth? Lesbian necromancers explore a haunted gothic palace in space! Decadent nobles vie to serve the deathless emperor! Skeletons! Charles Stross on Gideon the Ninth Unlike anything I've ever read. V.E. Schwab on Gideon the Ninth Deft, tense and atmospheric, compellingly immersive and wildly original. The New York Times on Gideon the Ninth Her city is under siege. The zombies are coming back. And all Nona wants is a birthday party. In many ways, Nona is like other people. She lives with her family, has a job at her local school, and loves walks on the beach and meeting new dogs. But Nona's not like other people. Six months ago she woke up in a stranger's body, and she's afraid she might have to give it back. The whole city is falling to pieces. A monstrous blue sphere hangs on the horizon, ready to tear the planet apart. Blood of Eden forces have surrounded the last Cohort facility and wait for the Emperor Undying to come calling. Their leaders want Nona to be the weapon that will save them from the Nine Houses. Nona would prefer to live an ordinary life with the people she loves, with Pyrrha and Camilla and Palamedes, but she also knows that nothing lasts forever. And each night, Nona dreams of a woman with a skull-painted face... At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

101/150 This was easily my favorite book of the series, so far. This iteration of Harrowhawk was by far the most pleasant and endearing, so sweet and kind. Her fate at the end was heartbreaking 💔. I hope Muir comes out with Alecto The Ninth as soon as possible. 5 🌟 read.

Not a spoiler but maybe a meta spoiler if you dig too deeply, so don‘t? 🤣
I honestly don‘t remember if I caught this on a previous listen, and casually book clubbing it with friends means I‘m actually putting things together and not just listening in the abstract. This series gets better and better with each new layer of meaning!

My sister finally finished Harrow, so once again I am (mildly) penitent about not warning her how Harrow ended by buying her coffee, a thematically appropriate sticker, and Nona.

And no. I have not and will not warn her how Nona ends. 😅

Honestly, I‘m not sure that I have any idea whatsoever what is going on in these books anymore 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ book 1 I sort of did, book 2 I absolutely didn‘t, and this one was kind of in between? But they get away with it because the voice is just so brilliantly done. It also highly fascinated and amused me seeing my home country New Zealand the scene of a dystopian future. Will the final book clear anything up? Who knows! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Nona, oh Nona! Muir shakes up the POV character yet again. This time, the narrator is full of sunshine and joy-and knows almost nothing about what's going on with the main plot (so tasty from a writing craft perspective). Meanwhile I'm scouring the background details trying to figure out what happened! Fascinating worldbuilding and it comes together in the end. I finished and wanted to reread the series almost immediately.

I loved this 3rd book in The Locked Tomb series, though I'm not sure I understood everything that happened (as in, who's alive, who's dead, and who's in whose body). This novel and the series got 2023 Hugo Award nominations.

BTW, the first half of the book felt like Anne of Green Gables with necromancers. Nona even has braids on the cover!

Tamsyn Muir is definitely a great writer. I love the world she has created with this series. Though, like almost every review I've read on this series, I still have no idea what is going on. Will I read the next one? Yes. So the author must be doing something right. #Serieslove2023

Nona wants to celebrate her 6 month birthday with her family, her gang, & every dog she‘s ever met. So if necromancers, a suspicious convoy, & a terrorism group fighting against God could stop, that‘d be great.

I loved this as much as I thought I would, but it really felt like it was stretched into a novel. Lots of world building, amazing characters, Noodles, questions answered, but also a cliff hanger that‘s making me gnash my teeth. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

I flat out loved Nona. And if Nona knew me, she‘d love me back. Also, Pyrrha and Camilla/Palamedes were wonderful. I know some readers thought this diversion from the main plot of the wider locked tomb narrative was unnecessary, but I loved every word of it. I‘m so excited now about the last book in this series , expected near the end of this year.

I was so frustrated after reading Harrow that I surprised myself by continuing this series. It‘s definitely a big improvement over Harrow even if I only understand the series a little bit more. These books are nothing if not extremely confusing for non necromancers or people very familiar with that topic. There‘s something about the way she writes that is compelling and very readable. I just hope the author stays off her medication and finishes.

I liked Nona: her childlikeness was lovable, but I was a bit disappointed how amnesia was used again in this series.

I loved post-apocalyptic world in this book.

Writing is sometimes fun and clever but those sentences are buried deep between unnecessary babbling to really shine out.

You could see some plot at least now and then. But this also felt a filler because there were mundane scenes that didn't get the story move forward.

Next row of my #readinglogsnake is for Nona the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir. Since this is science fantasy, I chose a purple blue blend yarn. I ❤️ this series, but the first 11 chapters in this was a slog to get through. I actually had to put this book aside for a month because I found them so boring. Chapter 12 returned the book back to the pace I expected in this series, and I enjoyed the remainder of the book. 4/5 ⭐️ #ARRCReads #BooksAndCrafts

I loved this. Was hugely confused for a while as I struggled to decide which characters I remembered from Book 2 and which I didn‘t …. But Nona is freaking fabulous, I loved seeing the world through her childlike eyes, trying to figure out what her role in the wider story would be. I think Tamsyn Muir likes to smash each house of cards she builds in this series and play with the pieces. It‘s a lot of fun if you‘re willing to go for the ride 😍

Of course Muir deepens her universe and moves forward in her story. There are some new things to learn and sh... is going down once again. Especially the first part of the book when we went to school with Nona was great to read.

My fox mittens still need one thumb and some blocking, but they‘re mostly done! Here‘re the palms instead of a repeat of the fox face backs.

Finishing the bulk of mitten #2 got me 44% into NONA THE NINTH. It seems fashionable to find it overlong and insiderish, but I‘m loving it. Maybe that means I‘m a Locked Tomb insider? More likely, it means I love puzzle books with great characters and cool worldbuilding and unabashed New Zealandness.

What the heck did I just read?!

Book 4, ASAP, please.

I may end up buying all four books just so I can read them all at once when Alecto comes out and maybe make more sense of them. Which may be Tamsyn Muir‘s evil master plan… 🤔

KristiAhlers I‘ve been putting off reading these afraid they wouldn‘t live up to the hype 2y
Clare-Dragonfly @KristiAhlers I‘m surprised there is so much hype because I would think they would be very niche. But I like them and I don‘t usually like weird for weird‘s sake. If you like weird, wild fantasy-SF, with mostly queer mostly horrible people, I‘d say… wait until Alecto the Ninth is coming out and then give Gideon the Ninth a try 😆 2y

I have enjoyed the Locked Tomb series, but this one was a bit of a struggle for me. I really felt like I was missing a lot (there's always a sense of that in these books) and the tone of this book is much different. Still, Muir's writing and character- and world-building are brilliant. If anything, I feel like I just need to reread the whole series before the next book comes out.

October 2022 was a pretty amazing reading month! I actually took an entire week off at the beginning of the month as a belated summer break and read 6 of the above books during that week. It was glorious.

Two of my most anticipated 2022 books, Nona the Ninth and Just Like Home, were every bit as amazing as I hoped. I finally got around to Convenience Store Woman, The Midnight Library, and Ten Thousand Doors of January, all of which rocked!

Nona is a breath of fresh air in a crapsack world. A quirky child with amnesia, naive, simple-minded and full of love, she tries to make the best of her daily life in postapocalyptic dystopia. The story is told from Nona's perspective, so it's way confusing, we have to assemble it like a puzzle, with details and references to previous books. That's hard work, with all the politics and military stuff. I googled for the explanations right away;) 4/5

We meet the cast of The Locked Tomb once more—all of them messy and confusing as hell, yet strangely lovable. This time we‘re seeing the events through the eyes of Nona, a born-yesterday woman-child, who understands what‘s going on even less than we do, and it‘s funny, and sad, and terrible, and glorious.

Man, do I love this series.

Tamsyn Muir continually surprises me, and I'm not even sure why at this stage. It was a ballsy choice to follow-up an amnesiac story with another amnesia/unknown-self/lost-soul story, but she pulled it off. Overall it was really good, and will likely warrant a re-read fairly soon just to cross reference all the biblical references that appear throughout.
