Madness of Sunshine | Nalini Singh
55 posts | 42 read | 34 to read
New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh welcomes you to a remote town on the edge of the world where even the blinding brightness of the sun can't mask the darkness that lies deep within a killer.... On the rugged West Coast of New Zealand, Golden Cove is more than just a town where people live. The adults are more than neighbors; the children, more than schoolmates. That is until one fateful summer--and several vanished bodies--shatters the trust holding Golden Cove together. All that's left are whispers behind closed doors, broken friendships, and a silent agreement to not look back. But they can't run from the past forever. Eight years later, a beautiful young woman disappears without a trace, and the residents of Golden Cove wonder if their home shelters something far more dangerous than an unforgiving landscape. It's not long before the dark past collides with the haunting present and deadly secrets come to light.

Another soft pick for me:
The main character goes back to her hometown in New Zealand after her husband's death only to get involved in a missing person's case. I highly enjoyed the setting but I do admit that some parts were a little slow for me. However, trying to figure out who the bad guy was kept me hooked.

My first book of 2024 (finished earlier this week) which has been on my bookshelf for years!

I enjoyed it overall. I felt a little disappointed that the “secrets” from 14 years ago weren‘t really anything that secret at all, or that linked to the missing person. But I liked the pacing and the mystery, despite what felt like a rushed ending!

Set in New Zealand, this should have been atmospheric. So much death in such a vibrantly lush place, but no. The pacing was off and the villains were sign posted. It was ok but not great.

I chose this book from a list of #sunshinenoir titles because I needed something for #booked2023 and had a long flight coming up. Not something I would have read otherwise, it was a good choice for a plane read. It kept my attention and didn‘t require much of me. I do also love a New Zealand setting. Otherwise I found it difficult to care much about either the characters or the mystery.

BethM I read a bunch of her archangel books a few years ago. I really liked those. 2y
Jas16 @BethM I want to try those. I read her rock kiss books and a couple books from another of her series and likes them. This just isn‘t really my genre. 2y

This mystery is set in a remote village on the New Zealand coast. The author did a great job of weaving the landscape and weather into the story and making almost every character seems like a plausible suspect. It kept me guessing!

This was a competent thriller set in an atmospheric cove. I was in the mood for a thriller and it was good to get back into the genre.

I did find that there were fair chunks where very little happened and that the characterisation was a bit 2-D.

I was wavering between 3 and 4 stars, and what swung it was that the ending I had come up with in my head was more twisty and exciting than the actual ending! 😅

⭐⭐⭐ 3 stars, not bad

A real page turner, and very visual. I can definitely picture it as a mini-series. The prose is a bit clumsy at times and it's a bit bleak in an "(almost) all men are bastards" kind of way, but I greatly enjoyed joining the MCs in suspecting everyone and squinting suspiciously at red herrings. Often I feel annoyed by crime books because I either solve it too quickly or it's written to be impossible to solve. But this was done just right.

squirrelbrain Wow, this must be a record for us reading the book club book! 🤣 2y

Not only did I start the book club book in time, I also finished it. I enjoyed this - I don't read masses of crime books, I'm just a dabbler, and will bail if I'm not into it, but I liked this one. It did remind me of Jane Harper - the antipodean setting, small towns, and home comings. I've recommended it to my mum, crime book devourer.

rockpools I agree on all counts (apart from recommending it to my mum. NOT a crime reader!) - enjoyed this one! 2y

rockpools That sounds fab! Unfortunately my library doesn‘t have audio, and I‘m on a bit of a belt-tightening exercise, so I‘ll have to stick with squinty print. 2y
julesG @rockpools Ah, the belt-tightening. Going strong here since 2017. I'm allowed to use my friends' libraries to keep my addiction going on the very cheap. If I had to buy all those books or had to rely on the meagre English section of my local library, I'd have given up books by now; or #MountARC would be a molehill. 🤔 2y
rockpools @julesG Hmm, borrowed library cards is an interesting idea. I‘ll have to go on a recruitment drive amongst my non-library-using friends! But yeah. The belt‘s got looser over the last couple of years. Time to reign it in again 🙄. And there is always #MountARC! 2y

squirrelbrain Finished already?! I don‘t think I‘m going to read this one as I‘m away anyway at the next #bookclub meeting. @rockpools -I did find that rather expensive African book at my library so was going to borrow it and send it to you / bring it to Gladstone‘s but then I realised it‘s stored in the archives, which can take weeks if not months to get hold of. 🤷‍♀️ 2y
julesG @squirrelbrain Audiobook on 1.75x speed and a very dirty teenager's bedroom. Mind you, I only cleaned what he doesn't clean weekly - wet wiping of bookshelves, top of wardrobe,... Okay, and I spied on the rather dumb gardener while he tried to cut the hedge horizontally in a straight line. He failed. 〰️〰️〰️ And then I was 78% into the book and decided to finish it before bed. 😁 2y
rockpools @squirrelbrain Aww, thank you for looking Helen! But I have Plan B, which is actually more interesting (to me) and costs considerably less in £ & effort! And you know my record on completing monthly challenges ?! 2y
squirrelbrain That‘s the sort of thing I‘d do Jules (spying on people, not cleaning teenagers‘ bedrooms!)…. 2y
squirrelbrain Now I‘m intrigued @rockpools 2y
julesG @squirrelbrain I don't normally clean their bedrooms. It was this one shelf we kept ignoring ever since the new window had been installed (two years ago). And once I'd started on that particular shelf I thought I should do all of them. 2y

I abandoned three books last week, all after I‘d read a substantial chunk, so I dunno how I‘ll fare with the stuff on my #weeklyforecast. I do know I‘d like to try:

• an early Kit Rocha dystopian
• Nalini Singh‘s first thriller
• an historical romance set in medieval Wales

We‘ll see if any of them sticks.

On audio, I‘ll reread THE KINGDOM OF GODS by N.K. Jemisin. At least I‘ll enjoy THAT, if nothing else.

I wanted to love this. The setting was fabulously atmospheric, but the story itself dragged and there were elements that were annoyingly repetitive. You can feel Singh‘s roots as a romance writer in the broken people attracted to each other angst, which would be fine if the chemistry felt believable. So much of this felt wooden and forced. I was also troubled by all of the older men salivating over a 19 year old girl.

KristiAhlers Ugh I love her books but for some reason held back on getting this one. Sorry it‘s so-so. May hold off until it‘s a paperback 5y
DGRachel @Katbooklover I enjoy her psy-changeling series, but not the guild hunter books, so I knew there was a chance this wouldn‘t work for me. Huge kudos to her for trying her hand at a new genre, though. 5y
KristiAhlers As a writer I totally respect and understand her need to do something different. Hopefully she managed to gather a new fan base! 5y

So I was a bit nervous going into this because I love Nalini Singh romances and this is a mystery, but why didn‘t I just have faith in her amazing writing and storytelling? It was a good book, mainly because the cultural and setting references were interesting, new to me and interwoven into the story. I thought I knew who “done it” but I was wrong.

Compulsively readable, this mystery is set in a tiny town on the west coast of New Zealand. I couldn‘t help but remember my own trip there while reading the beautiful descriptions of the wilderness and culture. Points of the plot were a bit unbelievable in the end, but I still loved the well-drawn characters and fast pace of the action. It reminded me a bit of The Dry and also The Great Alone. If the story is a bit formulaic—woman who escaped her small town for bigger & better things returns, there‘s a disappearance & suddenly secrets old & new unravel + a mysterious, brooding new policeman—that‘s ok, the formula is well executed (ha). While the pacing is slow to start, only really kicking into gear about halfway in, the sense of place will leave you wanting to visit New Zealand. This is a good beach/trip/weekend mystery read.
