The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie
The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie | Alan Bradley
Winner of the 2007 Crime Writers Association Debut DaggerA delightfully dark English mystery, featuring precocious young sleuth Flavia de Luce and her eccentric family. The summer of 1950 hasnt offered up anything out of the ordinary for eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce: bicycle explorations around the village, keeping tabs on her neighbours, relentless battles with her older sisters, Ophelia and Daphne, and brewing up poisonous concoctions while plotting revenge in their homes abandoned Victorian chemistry lab, which Flavia has claimed for her own.But then a series of mysterious events gets Flavias attention: A dead bird is found on the doormat, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. A mysterious late-night visitor argues with her aloof father, Colonel de Luce, behind closed doors. And in the early morning Flavia finds a red-headed stranger lying in the cucumber patch and watches him take his dying breath. For Flavia, the summer begins in earnest when murder comes to Buckshaw: I wish I could say I was afraid, but I wasnt. Quite the contrary. This was by far the most interesting thing that had ever happened to me in my entire life.Did the stranger die of poisoning? There was a piece missing from Mrs. Mullets custard pie, and none of the de Luces would have dared to eat the awful thing. Or could he have been killed by the familys loyal handyman, Dogger or by the Colonel himself! At that moment, Flavia commits herself to solving the crime even if it means keeping information from the village police, in order to protect her family. But then her father confesses to the crime, for the same reason, and its up to Flavia to free him of suspicion. Only she has the ingenuity to follow the clues that reveal the victims identity, and a conspiracy that reaches back into the de Luces murky past.A thoroughly entertaining romp of a novel, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie is inventive and quick-witted, with tongue-in-cheek humour that transcends the macabre seriousness of its subject. From the Hardcover edition.

Flavia is a delight! An 11-year-old w/a chemistry fascination who comes across a murder mystery in her garden & launches her own investigation? Right up my alley. It's such a quick read & Flavia is a fun character. Just as good was the Police Inspector's way of indulging her. There's not much of a mystery, as it's easy to figure out once given all the background info. At the same time, I found this a lovely read. Will definitely pick up the next.

This has been on my TBR list forever, and I finally got around to reading it. Flavia was weirdly adult in a way that I wasn‘t expecting. I guess I should have, since the premise is an 11-year-old who solves mysteries. She *is* an accurate picture of a gifted kid who‘s been left alone a lot to pursue her advanced interest (chemistry). The philatelic storyline interested me. Overall, 3.5 stars. I‘m interested to read a few more in the series.

Okay, Ive heard it rumored but not confirmed, is Alan Bradley's Flavia de Luce series over? It's my favorite series and typically news of the next book would be out now. Anyone got the scoop?

The series seems to garner a lot of love, but I found this rather a wobbly start. The story was interesting enough but although I could not comment on the philatelic aspects, some of the family history and religious asides would suggest that the author hasn't done his homework. Still, I will try the second one before making up my mind whether to continue.

I loved Flavia just as much as everyone said I should! The mystery is engaging but it‘s Flavia‘s unique and amusing take on everything from an ongoing war with her troublesome sisters to the murderous events occurring at their country estate and her savvy investigative skills that really make this book sing.

Picked this up last month at our library in Tokyo for #Readharder2019 (a cozy mystery) and was pleasantly surprised! Flavia is a cheekier, younger Nancy Drew who loves chemistry and trying to unravel all the mysteries. Full of charming and quirky locals in post-WWII English countryside. And to find out it's a series with heaps more 😍 currently on book 3 💨 #mommyreads #cozy #mystery #crime

I just finished this on audio and on the whole I found it a fun mystery. I love the narrator, Flavia. She is young, confident, arrogant, highly intelligent, and a true individual. The mystery itself was just ok and could have been better especially given Flavia‘s propensity for chemistry. I would recommend to anyone that likes British mysteries.

Bailedbailed

I am bailing on the #audiobook version of this book because the reader is so terribly distracting. I find the emphasis is put on the wrong words so often that I almost have to translate the lines to make better sense of them, and the tone and cadence of the voice is completely wrong for the character of Flavia as I understand her. I might try reading the printed version sometime instead!

julesG Agree. I couldn't do the audiobook for this either. 7mo

The most surprising part of this whodunnit, to me, was how much I struggled to get through it and how relieved I was when it was over. I didn‘t connect with Flavia at all. I kept waiting to, and it never happened. I rather disliked her whole family, if I‘m being honest. The setting was nice, and I liked the chemistry tidbits and facts about stamps. But I‘m not sure I‘ll be continuing the series. 😐

ItsAngel I‘m glad I‘m not the only one. I really struggled to like this book and at about 1/3 of the way through, I decided to put it down and try again later. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 8mo

I have been craving comfort so I decided to go back and listen to some Flavia de Luce. I‘ve read all but the last one and loved them, so I thought listening to them would be perfect. But the narrator is all wrong. She‘s bright and chirpy and, in my head, Flavia is wry and dry and cynical. I was really looking forward to listening to all the books, but I‘m going to have to bail on the audio.

Mdargusch That‘s too bad. I didn‘t mind the narrator although I do agree, she didn‘t sound like the Flavia I had in my head. 9mo
Coleen I‘ve also read all but the last. I read a lot of books on audio, but have not done any Flavia in that format, although have been tempted to. Maybe I shouldn‘t be.... 7mo
